Maybe they will call it touchOS?
that would make sense to me.

Would that be pronounced "Touch-Us"?

I can't see too many applications where multi-tasking is a "must have". Maybe being able to keep pandora or slacker up while I'm running my gps software, or answering a text, or email, or even web browsing; but I have an extensive library in the ipod app as well so I'm able to make do. It doesn't seem worth the trade off of lower battery life, I already have to think about what i'm doing on the phone come evening time as I'm usually around 35-20% life; I had to place a dock in a convenient place so that I can charge the phone when i get home from work but still have relatively quick and easy access to it in case of calls or otherwise.

I'd like the ability to add background images to the home screen, categories would be nice (that was my favorite JB feature). Spotlight helps with 20 pages worth of apps but 90% of the time I forget about it until I'm halfway though swiping, and I mostly use spotlight for finding apps, as I forget it searches contacts, mail, music, etc. I find myself going to the specific app to search. I'm not too concerned about a unified mailbox, I don't use that view much in my mail.app on my MB. If they did implement that feature, it would NEED to be smart enough to reply from the mail account that the message was sent to.

My wife and I both have iPhones so the need for multiple user accounts on iPhone I don't really see as a big deal, I can see how it'd be useful on an iPad though. If that did come to iPhone what I'd like to see is a way to make a "games only" profile that I could switch to when my kid wants to use it; but then we just bought him an iPod touch, which pretty much negated that need.

Changes I'd like to see to the lock screen include being able to decline a call and still be able to use the phone. When my phone is locked, if someone happens to call you answer via the unlock slider. If you press the sleep button to decline the call, the slider will still answer the call. As other people have mentioned I'd like my push notifications to stack, closing a text should not remove the badge from the messaging app nor should it mark the message read, especially for long texts that are truncated in the notification. I'd like to see a way to manually set the tone of a push notification as well. I use the Meebo app for instant messaging and it's audible tone is the same as whatever you set your text message tone to; and I treat those notifications differently so I'd like to differentiate between txts and pushes.

Another change I'd like to see to the mail application is a way to hide or collapse folders. I work in IT and about 25% of agents I support have iPhone and that number is steadily increasing. One complaint I field quite often is that some users have elaborate filing systems and their list of folders requires them to scroll for ages to find a folder that they're looking for. Sticking with folders, it'd be nice if there was a way to "force sync" a folder while you're looking at it to bring up items that are older than your sync is set for (4 days, or weeks, if you're set to only sync 3 days back). Even if it's a temporary sync that only shows the messages until you leave the folder. For me, there have been many a time i've had to change my sync setting to "unlimited" then have to sync my entire mailbox, forward the email i was looking for, then change my sync setting back to 3 days.

I cant' really see anything "BIG" that could be added to this release, cut/copy/paste and push notifications were kind of the only new features that I REALLY wanted. Most of my requests would be more along the lines of refinements. The rest I have, and could probably still, live without.

They previewed os 3.0 before they announced the 3gs

The 3GS was unveiled two (or was it one) week before it came out. I am pretty sure 3.0 was out when the 3GS was previewed.

EDIT: I lie it seems like 3.0 came out two days before the 3GS did.

It does not make sense that Apple is holding a media event now, just days after the iPad release. Why wouldn't this new software be released alongside the iPad? Is it possible that 4.0 was not finished in time?

Because the iPad shipped in April, and iPhone OS 4.0 probably won't ship until June/July (even though they'll show it off in April). A June/July OS update would be "in time" per Apple's pattern thus far.

I just don't see anything too exciting coming in 4.0 bull all of the speakers on Thursday will make it seem like the best thing since sliced bread.

Now there's the positive attitude we love to see!

Subfolders in the Photo-app would be awesome.

Currently, it is not really usable for me. I have sth like Year - Month - Special Event. In Photos, I can have either a whole year per album or certain months from the current years.

Some type of search would be nice as well. Also, saving the state when you leave the app for whatever reason. My brother-in-law has his entire photo library on his phone (it's mainly paintings that he likes to look through) and cannot stand that if he's looking for a particular album that at the bottom of the list that he cannot just jump to that folder, or when he's in one that has say 1000 photos that if he gets a call or text he chooses to answer that he has to remember 1) what folder he was in and 2) how far though that folder he has to scroll to get back to where he was.

Am I the only one who has remembered that the OS already allows multitasking? Just not for 3rd party apps.

I am frustrated every time I read that the iPhone doesn't allow multitasking. I can listen to an internet radio station on mobile safari while checking my mail. I wish there were more streaming music sites that worked on Safari.

I think there is a genuine concern that 3rd party apps won't be as tightly integrated as the native apps.

you can't label it touchOS when in 2011 macbooks will have touch added to the experience.. the hybrid desktop OS...

I still don't see why people are so jazzed about a touch interface on a desktop computer. I can see the usefulness at a kiosk or some free-standing area in say a living room; but leaning over your desk to touch the screen when you could just as easily, and more comfortably, use your mouse/keyboard just seems unnecessary. The hp desktops that already have this feature aren't even popular. I have an agent at work with one and she doesn't even use the touch interface, she just likes the big screen and imac-ness of it (everything built into the monitor)

1. How much memory (if any) might multitasking require?

Well I see it the other way round: How much memory can my app take for granted if multitasking is allowed? Or, since the available memory is already fixed in the devices up to 3GS and iPad, How many apps on average will you be able to run?

4. What is the realistic probability that the 4.0 software would be released for the iPad? I honestly do not mind the setup as it is on my iPad, although the smallish app icons do seem rather out of place on the larger screen.

It seems awkward that only the iPhones/iPod Touches get it first, and the iPad much later... It would add chaos for everyone (devs already have to target different devices). I think OS version unification is imminent.

I've got a few bets on whats coming...

Relatively Limited Multitasking
It'll still be a step up from what we have, but I would bet that they'll have something like "services" (or some sort of name like that) such as music and communication (I myself cant think of anything I need running in the background. The other applications are fine if they save my place in them). I would expect Apple to require users to select which applications can use these services in settings, choosing only one or two applications that can use these. I think this would create a good balance of functionality with power conservation. Obviously, push notifications would be sticking around, and maybe Apple will make it easier to save a users location in an application. If they do this, multitasking is essentially dealt with.

iAd (or whatever you want to call it)
I don't really know what it will be like, but Im pretty sure that iAd will be heavily pushed for developers to take advantage of, and be more interactive. How they'll do it, I have no idea. But I expect it'll be a good step up from current status quo.

File Syncing
And by that I mean like the iPad has. Nothing more, nothing less. Just making it on par with its big brother.

iBooks
On this, Im not sure at all. Id like to see it be on all iPhoneOS devices, but I don't see any particular reason to do this.

So, those are my bets. I'll know how wrong I was in 2 days.

I think that evidence of a new lock screen seems good. I have always thought that the iPad lock screen just looks stupid and unless they have plans for the large space in the middle, they would have done something else.

Mobile hotspot app for iphone in 4.0

Mobile hotspot app for iphone in 4.0...finally allow tethering...to any device!

I don't think it'll be available for the 1st gen iPhone.

Why? If it's compatible with the 3G, then there is no reason for it not to be compatible with the original iPhone. The 3G and original iPhone have identical specs (CPU speed, RAM, Camera).

Someone may have posted this already, but I'm really hoping for a "one more thing" announcement about the updated MBP/MBA.

But maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Why would they waste time on announcing an OS update to announce an update to hardware not even pertaining to the device the OS being announced?

I don't think it'll be available for the 1st gen iPhone.

I dont't think so either. Same with 3G. They are very similar and my old 3G ran 3.1.3 like a dog. Horribly slow at loading apps and keyboard lag city.

If the new software adds even more features, I can't see it getting much more efficient/optimized, seeing as how well it runs on newer hardware.

THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE !!!!(well yesterday was, but I've been thinking)

The biggest problem with touch screens, at least for me, are the greasy finger smudges that constantly need cleaning. At least the iPad screen isn't too big to keep clean. Anything larger would be a pain in the butt.:)

all this means is another week of distracting from the fact they dont give a fsck about their pro machines... another week those who have been waiting will have to wait another week as a result of Apple's PR blackout besides their focused product of the week... iphone and ipad have gotten more than their fair share of the attention. its more than high time to give their computers a halfway decent refresh, which wont grab that much attention away from the ipad/ipod/iphone, and give us a market-comparable refresh. their current offerings are embarrassing no matter how you present it.

if it ain't "broke" don't fix it. The current mbp's are top notch, imo. Are you just wanting an i7 or something?

maybe also the possibility to hold your iphone in landscape mode... (like the ipad...)

I would love this. Although I sold my iPhone and will be buying one in June/July, I really hated laying in bed on Safari with the screen twisting and turning every single second.

What I'd also like is the ability to add groups and then SMS them or email them. If I'm sending a joke via SMS, I have to individually add everyone and that's a real pain in the ass.

I just hope it has the features my other $20 phone has.

They are :

1. SMS delivery reports. Important for people who are in business or for that matter anybody.

2. Ability to forward a SMS.

3. Abilit to delete a single SMS and not the whole conversation thread.

It will be really shameful if even now in the 4th installment they do not have these basic features.

2 and 3, you've been able to do this since 3.0. Even when mms wasn't available. Learn2Edit button.

Screen size

Sorry if this has been mentioned before. A 4.3" screen would be awesome. It would keep me away from HTC EVO which is pretty formidable competition for iPhone. I would prefer iPhone but the screen and the speed that the HTC HD2 (even though it is on a crap windoze OS) runs at is pretty seductive...
