I am frustrated every time I read that the iPhone doesn't allow multitasking.

Is that because according to your dictionary a microwave is a computer?

Multi-tasking is the ability to have multiple apps open simultaneously.

Do you honestly think that there's anyone who thinks the iPhone can only run one process at a time? So the iPhone can either listen for phone calls, OR check for new mail at given increments, OR keep Safari pages in memory, OR detect when you've pressed the wake button, OR monitor the proximity sensor... but none of that simultaneously? ...No.

The iPhone can not multi-task. Running multiple (background) processes, including services associated with native apps, is not multi-tasking.

New Safari

I forgot to mention that I also believe Safari will be upgraded in 4.0. If no one has noticed, Mobile Safari does not allow users to set a home screen. Along with this functionality, it would be cool to see the new version of Mobile Safari's home screen with the tiled view of your most visited sites, just as It appears on your Mac.

Photos and Mail may see slight upgrades too. Still, nothing would impress me more than the addition of iChat.

Mail, Safari, Phone, iPod, and Voice Memos all run in the background simultaneously. Maps also runs in the background for a certain amount of time. If you quit maps, it will stay running for 10 seconds or so... probably so if you exit really quick you can keep the GPS lock.

I wonder if photo's will now look like the little piles they do on the iPad.

Excited to see what they are going to do with this!

Mail, Safari, Phone, iPod, and Voice Memos all run in the background simultaneously.

Mail - it's impossible to receive mail if there isn't a service running in the background.
Safari - reqiured to keep pages loaded in memory so they don't have to refresh when you re-launch the browser.
Phone - required to receive phone calls.
iPod - required to play music in the background.
Voice Memos - allows you to continue to record when returning to the home screen.

None of these are multi-tasked; they are background processes.

Would you say that the phone app is open because you can receive a call at any time? No.

Alternatively, would you say the phone app is open if you are on a call and return to the home screen? Yes.

That's the difference I'm talking about. The iPhone OS has a lot of background processes, including some native apps. These processes monitor the sensors, wait for phone calls, send SMS messages, connect to WiFi networks, detect button presses and touch events/gestures, check for email, auto-dim and lock the screen, update the date/time, etc.

The iPhone only has two instances of multi-tasking: remaining on a call while in other apps and double-clicking the home button for iPod controls.

iOS vs. OSX Mobile vs. Touch OS got me thinking. The answer is more than semantics as I believe it will tell us where Apple thinks this is all headed.

OSX Mobile would speak volumes about both Apple's sense of the brand value of OSX and a desire - on a permanent, going forward basis - to remind everyone of the unified underpinnings of the OS run by Apple hardware.

It's not as fun sounding IMO as iOS or Touch OS though.

BTW funny that 66 people voted negative on this :)
No offense, but all of those names are terrible. And also, it can't be OSX mobile, because the iPhone OS is only up to 3.0 so far. The X in OSX is the roman numeral 10. It's pronounced Oh Ess Ten, not Oh Ess Ex. Oh Es Ten Mobile 4 would sound ridiculous. Mac OS9 was before OSX. Why can't you just accept iPhone OS 3 and call it a day?

Did the 80+ people who rated this as a negative do so because they don't believe there will be an event on Thursday or because holding the event is a bad thing? I don't get it.

More because many of us are sick and tired of delayed Mac Pro/MacBook Pro updates from Apple, and stuff like this only delays it further. Furthermore, the way this stuff is presented, they should just rename the site iphoneosrumors.com, since that's near all that is up here anymore, and just make a totally different site for Macs.

So why don't you go make a totally different site for Macs? What's stopping you?

Yeah, but it is also weird how they refer to it as OSX 10.5, OSX 10.6, etc. It's almost as if theyre going to keep the name as OSX. Its been like that for nearly a decade as well no? Just a thought anyway

I could see them changing the name to iOS since it now covers 3 devices.

You actually have a good point there. The "iPhone OS" moniker is no longer appropriate when two out of the three devices it runs on aren't iPhones.
iOS or "OS X Mobile", perhaps? I could see Apple try to make a closer tie-in with Mac OS X. Think halo effect.

News flash (as of end of January): Apple is a mobile device company now. Os x and related hardware is on the back burner. We might get something in aug / sept.

Someone suggested touchOs (which I think sounds better).

I agree - "Touch OS" could work. Although they would lose the effect of hinting at OS X (the halo effect, you know).
I have always assumed that given the popularity of the iPhone OS-devices, Apple would eventually make iPhone OS and OS X share more and more features in terms of "look and feel", so as to nudge people in the direction of the Mac.

What do you guys think? Aren't we already seeing this trend in both OS'es?

Yeah I think your right there. Pretty much all the apps have the same name, plus, later on, they added spotlight to the iPhone (and now iPad) which as we know has been a feature of Mac os. I can see them bridging the gap more and more with future updates.

You did see the comment that asked if TouchOS would be pronounced "Touch Us", no? ;)

Cue "Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch Me"...

Maybe TouchOSX would be better (and tie into branding).

How can Touch OS be terrible when OS X is not even a name! It stands for Operating System 10!

Beside we are just saying if Apple is willing to do it we may think of these names.

Now iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad are three similar but just one is a phone.

Apple changed name of its company after having Macs, iPods and iPhones and said lets change the name to Apple Computer to Apple Inc because now we are not making just computers anymore, then why not changing a name of an OS?

The truth is: no one really care if they even do it, we are just fooling around, it's fun. Still better than arguing on whether the iPhone OS 4 has multi-task or not. ;)

Anyone know if there's a spoiler free page for this event?

Dunno, but what could those sites actually say about the presentation.

"All right, it's starting" *approx one hour later* "and Steve walks out the door, hope you enjoyed this keynote as much as we did".
;)
