not really...

I still have my original green iPod mini (after two self-service battery replacements), which I use for two reasons:
  • Running/Gym (don't want to risk damage to iPhone)
  • Occasionally with stereo as a 'jukebox' if my mac is off or somewhere else

So if I didn't already have an iPod I probably wouldn't get a new one, and if so a shuffle

Why would you need a iPod when you have iPhone that does that for you.

Battery life. It sucks in the iPhone as I usually have to nurse it along to get it through the whole day. I always pack my Nano for my music and video. It has fab battery life. I'm hoping that the iPhone 2 addresses this problem adequately but I'm not banking on it.

I have both

8gb iphone is not enough for me..I especially know that will be the case when the app store goes up, it's not going to be enough space...so I carry both...I have my songs and movies on my 30gb Ipod, and use the iphone to surf, text, and make calls...I love my set up!!:D I'm getting the 3g Iphone and will do the same..won't change my set up until they come out with a 30gb iphone

i use my ipod, because ive got the altec lansing speakers for the ipod..but even then its been sitting in the dock for awhile.

My shuffle was on ebay June 15th 2007. My 8GB iPhone was perfect for the gym. I only listened to my shuffle when lifting / running. With the iPhone, it is even better with playlists and the agility to take a call with no more than a mere button press.
I love the iPhone.
Now I am using a RAZR V3xx 3G after my 1st gen iPhone sold on EB for $400.
C'mon July 11th!

The answer in short:
NO IPOD when you have an IPHONE, the world's best IPOD!

absolutely

for those of us how actually get out an exercise, it is necessary.

i tried using my iphone for music while i worked out, but it's just a tad bit too bulky and heavy. i'd much rather use either my ipod mini or 2g nano while i work out.

Agreed... For those of you that are using your iphone when you work out...you obviously arent working out hard enough or you can deal with it bouncing around all over the place. No case or holder can keep the iphone secure enough for me while I workout.

Get outside and run some hills, do some sprints and plyometrics and see if your iphone doesn't end up on the ground.

Nano 8GB--FTW while workout out
Iphone 16GB when in mojo mode.

I have approx 25GB of music in itunes (not counting videos films etc) I thought that the phone would never replace my classic entirely as I liked to have all my music to hand. When I got the phone I just got smarter about what I loaded on it and I havent used the ipod since. I'm lucky though that I am generally in the mood to listen to certain types of music e.g at the moment I am enjoying listening to newer guitar stuff so I just load that on. If I am on the mood for Rap I just load a lot of rap on. Works well for me.

i actually would have sold my ipod but it is very dodgy (crashes my computer when I try to update it) so I havent been able to update it for a long while. I dont even know where it is now!!

Yes 80gb for Car journeys and trips away. Iphone 8gb for day to day use. Have 54 gb of music so need 64gb iphone before i'm really happy and can ditch the 80gb. ......Then there's 650 dvd's to rip....When will this madness end?

I don't have an iPhone but I do have an iPod Touch. I find it okay for straight listening to music, but I do quite a bit of language learning from stuff recorded onto my nano. It's much easier to pause and go back a few seconds on there than on the iPT where you have to look at what you're doing. With the nano you don't even have to think about it to pause it - I just hold it with my finger on the wheel and click every time I want to pause or restart.

Depends on what you want to listen to would be my answer.

i have a 8 gb nano only because with the 100 bucks steve gave us i needed to spend it on something. I don't use it anymore though and i dont even listen to music on my iPhone.........ever since i got my sidekick lx my iPhone pretty much just sits in my purse...:D

I almost never use my iPhone for music and podcasts. I keep a 30GB iPod video for that...I pretty much only listen to stuff when I'm in my car (two hours a day, round trip to work), and I have a dedicated iPod connection in there. I don't want to continually plug and unplug my iPhone all the time -- I'd rather keep it free for calls. I don't walk around listening to music, and I carry a bag with my laptop whenever I'm out, so it's not a hassle to have another iPod with me. I think once iPhones get bigger -- around 32 GB -- and my iPod video finally dies (I can already hear the hard drive starting to hesitate) I'll find a way to just use the iPhone. But for now, I prefer the music in the car come from the iPod.

prior to my iphone, i had a 60gb video ipod, 1G shuffle, and a 4GB nano. i sold the video ipod and the shuffle since i never used them after i got my iphone (though i rarely used the shuffle to begin with anyway), and i use the nano in my car only, where it's hooked up to the stereo system. i only take it out of the car to sync it, but it lives in my glovebox otherwise.

my iphone goes everywhere with me and fills all of my music-listening needs!

I would much rather risk breaking my mini in the gym than my phone when i get it. I have a buddy who shattered his ipod screen bc a weight landed right on it.

I think it's necessary.

Actually, I think that may be Apple's 'ideal' plan - especially for 'music-philes', someone who would describe as really 'loving' music (I'd consider myself one.)

I'll have the iPhone 3G 16GB for everyday commuting, or when I'll just need some music with me.

And I'll still keep my 160GB iPod Classic for long trips/vacations/car rides - I love having my entire music collection with me like that, and being able to choose and bring up songs instantaneously is what I love.

More space for music/videos possibly?

+ photos.
After switching to 10 mega pixel slr camera, my photo collection is increasing in size at double the pace.
30gb of music, 20gb of video and 30gb of photos. I view my iPod as a complete backup, of music and photos (though with a 60gb iPod, I can't fit my music and photos anymore.

iPhone will hold some music and some photos, but not a replacement for my iPod.

i use my nano when I am at the gym or running. I don't like to carry my phone with me when I am working out. it distracts me and I would like some time untethered to it.

I used to have a nano but I sold that when I got my iphone back in December....but I did by a shuffle so I could use it while at the gym, running etc.

I have an old iPod (15 GB, wheel with 4 touch buttons above it... not sure which version this was) that still works. I use that for mowing the lawn, working out, yard work, etc.. I use my iPhone for everything else. I absolutely cannot wait to get 16 GB and then 32 GB someday. 32GB would be the holy grail for me. I am already getting worried about how much of my 16 GB is going to various Apps that I will buy.

I'm in the gym daily and I would never use my iPhone while working out, so my nano gets a lot of use there. And on trips my 80GB video comes with me so I can have more of my music to choose from.

I've only ever had the 3rd gen iPod (pre-video), and a 8gb shuffle. So no -- it wasn't worth it to me to keep them. But even if I had a larger capacity video iPod, I don't think I would have kept it. Even with just 8gb on my iPhone, it holds enough of my music (which I listen on shuffle mode anyway, and gets changed every time I sync) and videos (very few).

too many iPods

i have had a few ipods... i started kind of late, my first ipod was a 3G 15Gb... right now i have my 5G, my shuffle, and of course, my iphone... i use my 5G for the car, and for the shower, and for whenever i need a lot of music... the shuffle is for running, and the gym, and sometimes in the car... my iphone is treated mostly as a phone... i use it to listen to music in the car as well sometimes... or at work sometimes i play music on it... but i will always need a bigger ipod... until iphones are more like 80GB i will have at least 3 ipods.
