Whats your personal bet on the nomenclature of Apple’s rumored flagship smartphone?

If you don’t see your choice above, let me know and I’ll add it.

It'll be getting the ProMotion screen. So I'd bet Pro. Matches up with how Apple is doing all their other products at this point, so I'd guess it to be Pro, considering the luxury camera additions as well.

Only one that makes sense to me is Edition, but seeing how it will be coming out in all the normal iPhone colors, and that the 7S and 7S+ will both be made of glass as well, I think that name is out.

Your reasoning means that Apple cannot ever have a device with a ProMotion screen, that is not called 'Pro'. This means the Apple Watch, regular Macbook, and regular iMacs will never be upgraded. This means that Apple cannot ever drop 'Pro' naming from any of the devices.

Think that's likely still?

Pro, would bet on it.

7S will be 'iPhone'
That's not how you market one of the highest selling consumer devices on the planet.

Why do you think the iPhone has had numbering?

I think that they can safely go by those guidelines until they decide to change up the lineup/upgrade the lower tier devices to higher end features like 120hz display. But yes I do still think it's likely, and could be held for a few years before that becomes an "issue", although at that point since it's not a new feature it won't matter what they do.

They could have called ProMotion whatever they wanted, but they probably knew that it would be a major feature for the iPad Pro and future iPhone Pro/OLED iPhone, so they decided to make the marketing name match the marketed product that it's being introduced on. Makes sense.

I don't see the iPhone translating into the iPhone Pro because of the Promotion Display on the iPad Pro line. It's just a marketing term to describe that specific feature. The Pro moniker seems akin to Pro devices similar to the iPad or MacBook line up for productivity or work development.

I know I'm repeating myself, but "Pro" is not suited appropriately for an iPhone. It Sounds interesting, but I don't believe it's appropriate for an iPhone. I know others believe the numbering system Needs to be dropped, but I believe it will continue for the "7s", followed by some clever marketing term (Example would be 'Air') for the OLED model identification to separate it away from the other iPhones.

I agree, it's a bit of a stretch. I suppose to brainstorm further one can start to guess at what they will be forced to do the following year, when they offer the 5.8 AND 6.4 models. Will it go to iPhone and iPhone Pro, or iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus? If this year is a one off, then maybe Edition is more appropriate. Based on how they did the :apple:Watch edition though, it just doesn't seem right.

The numbering is dated...and they're caught in a snag this year with 3 phones with new external designs. They can't use 7S. That name is already dated. They cant call them all 8 either because they wont want to saddle the new OLED model with the lesser, more dated phone. I can almost guarantee the numbering is done. For then 10th anniversary they'll introduce iPhone, iPhone Plus, and iPhone Pro.....Pro will be aimed at the Galaxy Note with more features and power, and I expect multiple sizes in the future Like the iPad Pro. It's basically the start of a new era of iPhone. Maybe they'll do something like "Pro Series 2" next fall...who knows. But they're not going to release 2 new phones and call one 7S and one 8...that would be stupid and fragmented.

Numbering isn't done. Numbering is necessary for the iPhone. Why? Because the iPhone sells 40+ million per quarter. The iPhone upgrade cycles are short. The iPhone has a social relevancy to hold with its numbering, meaning people like to have the latest and let people know they have the latest, and numbers accomplish that. See the iPad numbering isn't necessary now due to the upgrade cycles and people not caring which one they have sitting at home to watch Netflix on.

iPhone 'Pro' will never happen for multiple reasons. Just like there will never be an 'Apple Watch Pro' or 'Apple TV Pro' or 'HomePod Pro' or 'AirPods Pro'. I mean it's simply the worst marketing possible.

One of the things we fully agree on. Although you stole that example from me haha

Yes, I agree. I do recall you mentioning the "Air" example. But that's a fitting example of what Apple might do. Pro just doesn't work at all for an iPhone and as good as Apple's marketing is, I don't believe Pro was even a consideration with naming this new iPhone.

Yeah there's no way Apple considered that. It's throwing away an amazing marketing opportunity for the new features/design.

Surprised by the people voting for iPhone 8. Why would Apple release 2 separate numbered phones in one keynote. Makes no sense. There's no way they reveal an iPhone 7S and iPhone 8. From a marketing stand point they are already dating the 7S before it's released. I hope they do away with the numbering system all together.

iPhone SE
iPhone
iPhone Plus
iPhone Pro

You need numbering for iPhones. And Pro makes no sense.

Moreover, next year you have a new OLED that is the size of the Plus model. So what do you call the iPhones next year?

iPhone Pro
iPhone Pro Plus? iPhone Plus Pro?

So incredibly terrible.

Or do you just call the 5.8" and 6.4" iPhones both: iPhone Pro?

You can't do that because iPhone HAS to have naming differentiation for consumer marketing purposes. It's the same reason there is an iPhone Plus right now.

Personally i think it's more likely to be either the iPhone 8 or iPhone X, it will be interesting to see what Apple say in the keynote, are they going to lead with this phone first talking about "Face ID" OLED screen, wireless charging, demoing it and then going onto the 7s and 7s Plus by saying "oh and we are also updating the iPhone 7 and calling it the 7s by updating the internals and adding wireless charging" OR will they talk a little about the 7s and then "oh and one more thing, we are today introducing the iPhone X, the next generation of iPhone"

i'm really looking forward to this keynote, hopefully Apple send out the invites soon with their usual cryptic message :)

I get what you are saying. Numbering is fine early on but thinking down the line, having iPhone 15 will be absurd. I think they realized that with the iPad and will do something with the iPhone.

Maybe after this cycle, they will just have iPhone and iPhone Pro (which will replace the plus version).
