I was just thinking this earlier today. I remember before the iPhone 6s launched, rumors were circulating that the next iPhone would be called "Pro". Now that's been over two years and it still never happened. I think some translate the word 'Pro' into their mind and they think it sounds good, but logically it's not a practical term for an iPhone at all.
Every year people say it will be called pro. It's ridiculous.

The new design every 2 years made sense when carrier subsidies drove upgrades. My guess is Apple is moving to a longer refresh cycle (maybe 3 years) and now would be the opportunity to change the naming convention to coincide with that. I don't have a good guess what it will be but I am expecting a change in naming scheme because of it.

Why ridiculous? Wouldn't it match up nicely with the rest of their product lines. 2017 will be the last year of the plus so we will have iPhone, iPhone Plus, and iPhone Pro this year. Next year we will just have iPhone and iPhone Pro, MacBook and MacBook Pro, iMac and iMac Pro, and iPad and iPad Pro. Makes perfect sense to me.

I don’t see a longer refresh cycle happening, unless you mean they’ll offer small spec upgrades every year with similar body (I.e. iPhone 6, 6(S), 7), but that’s nothing new.

So long as other manufacturers put out phones every year, so will Apple.

Haven't seen this posted elsewhere, but apparently many case manufacturers are updating internal SKUs based on people having seem packaging for the new iPhones being printed.

Allegedly, they will be called iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone Edition.

Think it would be a tad odd not to use the 7s name, but maybe they don't want it to seem like an older model in comparison to the premium 'Edition'?

It's slightly academic as we'll find out in 11 days, but interesting to speculate...

I posted this in another thread not to long ago. I actually like the "Edition" name like the Apple Watch Edition it fits in nicely. Also with Apple calling the next iPhones the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the Edition People will not feel left out if they opt for the 8 rather than it being called the 7s and the OLED one being called the 8, marketing wise it's a good idea.

I dont think they will call it "edition". I think it will just be the iPhone 8.
What will they call it next year then? Edition S ? iPhone 9 ? Pro 2 ? lol

No they will do what they did with the Apple Watch Edition, discontinue last years and then add a updated version, last years Apple Watch Edition is the Ceramic one the year before that it was the gold one's but they were still called the Apple Watch Edition.

iPhone 8
iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone Edition

Next year

iPhone 8s
iPhone 8s Plus
iPhone Edition - updated

OR

iPhone 8s
iPhone Edition - the rumoured 6.4" iPhone

It's really not that hard to see them doing this. Not saying they will but it makes more sense than calling it the iPhone 8.

My guess is Edition, i like the name and it makes sense they have also done it before with the Apple Watch so the Edition name is familiar and already a part of the Apple brand (with the Apple Watch).

Calling the new 7S's the 8 makes no sense.

Are they seriously going to offer the same design for the cheaper phones (i.e. the iphone 6 design) next year again. Ignoring the massive dick move that would represent for the obvious reasons they are back in the same place as they are now and would be calling it the 8S.

People are also not retarded. They will look at the 7S and think "wow, that looks like the iPhone 6,6S & 7. They won't go "wow, that 8 is a great looking phone that is no way a generation behind the edition model".

I was surprised when they didn't release a new design for the 7 but at least there were a few changes to it that made it reasonably different. The 7S is a 7 with a glass back and wireless charging I couldn't give a single **** about. They can call it what they want at the end of the day but consumers can see with their eyes what apple are doing.

Sept 22 we only can buy ( alot stock available people wait for 8 )

7S
7S+

Jan 22th lately ( limited stock like airpod )

8 X Edition

What Made the Apple Watch Edition was the fact that it was the materials with Ceramic aside from the other Apple Watch models. Otherwise, it's exactly the same in terms of watchOS and function/capabilities. I still question the whole 'Edition' naming scheme for the iPhone 8. And the term "Pro" Hopefully will not be brought up again once we find out that Apple did not choose that specific title.

The materials in the iPhone Edition will be different according to rumours, it will include stainless steel apparently, where as the other iPhone's will remain on the current materials there is also a rumoured glass back for all of the models for wireless charging. I'm not sure if I believe that but it could explain the Edition naming as well, I would prefer Edition over the "Pro" naming.

Hmm. What if Apple releases the "regular" iPhone 8/X for $949-999/128GB and $1099-1199/256GB but they do a ceramic iPhone Edition at $2K+/512GB?

$2000 for a 512 GB Ceramic iPhone. Tempting, but more than I would be willing to spend.

Pro, would bet on it.

7S will be 'iPhone'

Exactly this. 7 is the last numbered iPhone.

That's possible. Although I'll bet against it. I think their luxurious direction will be aimed at their wearables only because those are visible items on your body.

Numbering isn't done. Numbering is necessary for the iPhone. Why? Because the iPhone sells 40+ million per quarter. The iPhone upgrade cycles are short. The iPhone has a social relevancy to hold with its numbering, meaning people like to have the latest and let people know they have the latest, and numbers accomplish that. See the iPad numbering isn't necessary now due to the upgrade cycles and people not caring which one they have sitting at home to watch Netflix on.

iPhone 'Pro' will never happen for multiple reasons. Just like there will never be an 'Apple Watch Pro' or 'Apple TV Pro' or 'HomePod Pro' or 'AirPods Pro'. I mean it's simply the worst marketing possible.
You're spot on, I find it both annoying and funny how people think it will be called Pro. They are so sure of it but it makes no sense, I guess they think it makes a lot of sense because of other products, but the truth is they're wrong. As for people thinking it'll be called 8, that's just annoying.
