So how is this going to work for VoIP apps, like Skype? Can the sound notification make the iPhone "ring", to tell me I have an incoming call? Will I be able to click on a notification to open up Skype app quickly enough to accept the call?

another thing they should do is allow the icon to change - so the weather icon could display the current temprature like the calendar icon changes.

It goes away automatically after a few seconds.

However, the message stays there and alerts you twice more until you turn the screen back on, and the message is still there and unlocking it forces you into the SMS app. Stupid system IMO.

Yep. Also, AIM will be able to replace SMS in many cases. (Assuming it all works as promised.)

They REALLY need to revamp their notification system if they're going to do this!
Those pop up messages are way too intrusive and in your face, but the badges are way too subtle!

The Palm pre's notifications rock, it pops up from the bottom but does not obscure the screen. You do not have to close them or anything, you can keep working as you get notified.

Android's notifications are in a clever and useful pull down menu. I'm pretty sure that when you get one it alerts you up top, then you can slide your finger down from the top to drag down a little list of notifications.

On the other hand, Apple just pops a pop up straight in your face! And you need to stop typing whatever you're typing or reading whatever you're reading and deal with the pop up screaming at you. With badges though, you would have to scroll through all of your home screens to see if anything has a notification (if you turn off the annoying as hell pop ups). They need to take a clue from palm or google and revamp their notification system - especially if any app will be notifying us in addition to the apple ones!

I'm with you 100%. Apple is going to have to change this sooner or later. It's best to do it now so people won't complain. The popups and sounds are useful but it cannot be the fundamental way you interact with the PNS. There needs to be some unified sytem. I can see people having 6 or 7 PNS apps and you'll be getting constant popups and beeps all day long. The badges are essentially useless since you'll have to be scrolling through 11 screens of apps to look for a badge.

Options:
-a PNS app icon which gives a list of your alerts
-an Android/WebOS pullup or drop down menu
-both

Just an idea, but if you wanted us to believe this, you probably shouldn't have then posted an image of the Pre with the alerts covering up buttons on the screen.

That's the whole thing. You can pull it up anytime you want instead of getting bombarded with alerts. The reason the screen is that way is that whoever wanted to use the Pre was intentionally looking at the alerts.

Lame

Can someone please explain what the significance of the badge icon for this app is?

There are going to be new articles every time you open the app; the badge icon will not distinguish between articles you have read or not. What action clears the badge icon, just opening the app? Pop-up alerts aren't saved so once you unlock the screen it's gone, even in the event there were multiple alerts on the lock screen (meaning the content of none of them are displayed, just that they were received). It seems like all it does is show you there is new content - but seeing as this is a news app, isn't that a given?

technically its free but what most people in thid thread arent taking into account is the likely price increase in apps that support push notifications because devs now have to maintain servers.

I am pretty sure that it will use apple's server. At least that's how the original presentation (for the september release) seemed to be showing it.

Can't believe how much complaining there is already about Push.......and it hasn't even been released yet. lol.

And it's not like very app is going to constantly pop up a message every few seconds. I can see apps like AP, and other news apps constantly notifying via Push........but if you didn't want to be constantly notified, why would you download the app in the first place? Other than that, I believe Push is goint to be massively successful and I personally can't wait for it.

Epic Fail. It's still nothing like background tasking.

Dude, enough with this "epic fail" douchebag lingo.. it's not 2005 anymore.

Background processing has its place, and Apple will support it in due time.. But centralized push notification is highly innovative and generally welcomed step forward for the platform.

Blah, I was hoping you could set custom sounds per application. Some applications I want a simple beep where some I want to have an actual alert kinda noise. For example, I could in theory create an application to monitor my inbox and if a certain regex is found in the subject sound the alarms (so to speak).

As someone who is oncall 24/7 there is no way for me to tell if an SMS is a real problem or just someone sending me a message.

I sure hope they come up with a non-invasive way to display notifications... i expect to get lots of push notifications throughout the day and a big blue box popping up everytime...especially when i'm in the middle of something will be extremely annoying.

Edit: If you agree, voice your feedback to Apple.

Wow a 3G symbol! that must be a new feature?! Oh wait, I'm on O2. That's why I've never seen it before.

LOL! Same here out in the sticks, the armpit of England. Only 3G signal I've found out here is in the city of Lincoln itself, which is a slight concern if MMS really is only going to be available on a 3G signal. Still, I've managed to live without it this long.

This is all looking good so far though. I, like many others here, would probably just settle for badge notifications, but it's all cool.

I have been testing it and i DO NOT like that you swipe to view and then the app opens up. It seems like as long as that message is on there, there is no way to swipe to unlock the phone and not see the message. The next notification I get I am going to try and see if there's some way to ignore it and not open the app.

If you don't swipe right away it doesn't open the app.

What's wrong with the badges, then? Why can't you use those?

I thought Push notifications had a special sound and did not use the SMS sound. Can someone clarify this?

Also, I agree that Apple needs to do work on where these notifications appear. I love how the G1 does it and it makes the most sense with screen space. Just drag the menu bar down or something to open up the window.

I really hope Apple works on this!

I'm with you guys as well. Imho, the BIGGEST weakness on the iPhone (in terms of UI) is really the notification system. I'm hoping and praying that iPhone OS 4.0 addresses this.

I want to know the "brilliant" individual that thought that "pop-ups" was a good idea for notifications. Boy, pop-ups were such a great idea for the web.

Can't believe how much complaining there is already about Push.......and it hasn't even been released yet. lol.

So let me get this straight. It's better to complain after 3.0 has been finalized and nothing can be changed than to complain so it can fixed before 3.0 is released?

You're missing the point. People who have a lot of friends on IM are going to either:
-be getting constant pop-ups through the day even when you're trying to do something
-get beeps everytime you're listening to a song
-sift through eleven screens of apps to find a badge above the icon

This is just one app. The truth is that none of these are the best answer. The best solution is to have one place to check all these things with some minor indication to let you know. Maybe an app icon with a badge that can live on your home screen to alert you you of messages or a pull down. It's not a coincidence that Palm and Google have taken a similar approach to solving this problem.
