For those who don't know, AT&T is now taking in-store pre-orders of iPhone 3G. Just go into a store and request it. Even though they may say that it'll take 2-3 weeks to get the order, my wife and I had them the next day.

Hope this helps,
-Dan Uff

Interesting. I am thinking about doing that.

How often do AT&T stores get restocked?

I went into an AT&T store and was told it will be at least 2 weeks before they have any stock. They said I can order one and that will take about 10 days. So I did, had to give them my credit card but they only charge when they ship. I am just surprised you can't do the same thing online and no mention on AT&T's website.

I finally got notification my iphone was shipped this morning :D. I checked the Fedex tracking and it's already in town. So it took about 10 days!

well i decided to cancel my order. i had gotten an email and phone call from the store that it was in, but bc of work schedule i couldnt get to it till the following week. had to physically go into teh store as not even the main at&t sales dept could do anything. but when i went in and said i need to cancel, i was told the phone wasnt in and that they couldnt cancel till the phone came in, then i could return it?? so what did they do with with the phone that came in? sold it someone else? LOL

*actually the email said i had 7 days to pick it up or it would get cancled, but i actually came in the morning of the 7th day so either it was already returned, they got impatient waiting for me and sold to someone else or once i said i wanted to cancel, it suddenly "disapeared". it all sounds fishy to me. like a big scam! LOL! well as long as i get my card refunded in full, i wont care.

I went to my local AT&T store today to ask a question about my iPhone and at the same time a lady asked if they had iPhones in stock - the associate said she can order it now and she will receive it in approximately seven days. The AT&T employees could not answer my question and sent me over to the Apple store (Costa Mesa, CA), and when I got there, there were only three people in line to buy iPhones and when I was asking my question I also asked about the line and they said "all we are allowed to tell you is that we have them in stock right now."
I feel sorry for the lady who put her name on the list at the AT&T store and now has to wait seven days.

AT&T is oblivious from anything to do with Apple outside of selling a phone that Apple makes. You would think these jackass employees would say "Hey, if you wanna avoid the wait, Apple has plenty in stock" like a business associate does when referring to their associate partners. It's almost like AT&T doesn't want Apple to sell any iPhones and keep it strictly to AT&T stores only.

What's even more retarded is that AT&T has a system that is "completely different" from Apple's when you activate to purchase the iPhone. I tried asking the manager at AT&T if I could just go to the Apple Store (Fashion Island/Newport Beach) where they had it in stock and come back to the AT&T store to activate my phone because I got a reversal on my upgrade eligibility (returned the phone but needed a fckn VP authorization that took 5 fckn days to get back to me, in addition to the 2 weeks they made me go around in circles) but they said no, saying Apple doesn't have the authority to do this reversal.

I swear, AT&T is dumb. How difficult is it to just simply purchase the iPhone and sign a contract saying that I would activate it and just go fckn activate at an AT&T store? I mean, where's the logic in ordering something and waiting 10-21 days that your partner store has plenty in stock? FCK AT&T

Dude, I totally here you. AT&T makes more money on the monthly service fees than anything else. You would think they would be sending everyone to Apple stores and getting as many people as they could signed up ASAP!
As far as I know, most AT&T stores are company owned and not franchise. For a franchise, I could see the owner wanting to retain as much business to his own store as possible. But like I said, I think most AT&T stores are company owned. They should send everyone to Apple stores and get their monthly revenue flowing ASAP!

How busy is the Newport Apple store? I've been avoiding the Irvine Spectrum and going straight to the South Coast store because the Spectrum is always too busy to get help from anyone. Plus there are too many teenagers fooling around and loitering at the Irvine Spectrum store.

I got my phone about a week ago, in the middle of a weekday and barely had to wait at all. Today (weekend), I go with one of my friends to get an 8GB, and we are told..

They are sold out of 8GB models but they have 16GB in both colors.

So, we call all the other stores within a half hour (5 Apple Stores) and everyone says they are sold out of 8GB models but they have 16GB. So this tells me one of two things ... most people want 8GB and they sell out first ..OR.. Apple is trying to upsell everyone.

Or Apple made fewer 8GB phones anticipating that more would want 16GB. Even if fewer people buy 8GB, if there are fewer that were made, they'll sell out sooner.

My friend got his from the AT&T Store after a 2 week wait.
They're available, just order or get in line... :)

My friend needs hers by this weekend though. On Saturday, she is leaving for a 2-week trip, and an iPhone would be very handy for a tourist. So, although I already have my iPhone, I'm trying to help her find one soon. Last night, Apple's website showed 8GB stock at almost all stores, but today every store is telling me either "we are sold out and that's all we can tell you" or else they say "we just sold out earlier today." I called one store and they told me they had them in stock, and when I get there they say "we just sold the last one about ten minutes ago." I wasn't very happy. If they knew they only had a few left, they should have told me not to bother. This whole game the Apple stores are playing instead of just telling you the inventory is REALLY pissing off A LOT of people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One kid even tried to upsell me to the 16GB with a full-on persuasive speech!

At this point supply does not ned demand so the equation tilt more towards how strong your want and ned for one is. If you really want on, get to s store that shows that they will have the phone at 7:30 AM, wait in line until they open at 8 AM and they hand out the little vouchers. Then you can take of and return any time before 6 PM to pick up your phone, typically without any line if you get there after 1 PM.

I know this is more burdensome than what some want to do and that is why other people who are willing to do this (i.e. they want it more) get their phones first.
