Your probably right I didn't think of it in a marketing sense. I guess what i should be hoping for is the apple tv to send multiple streams around your house, as of now I think it only plays through the speakers connected to it

i'm not quite sure what you mean? You want your AppleTV to control and send signals to other devices throughout the house? That's kinda what your computer is for......

It's happening...

The race for living room dominance have been going on. While Sony has the PS3, and Microsoft's entry is the Xbox. Apple is coming in with a combination of stuff with the Apple TV at the center.

I am just seeing my future setup, an hd projector connected to my satellite service and Apple TV, my iMac sitting at the office with the Time Capsule serving and backing up files, the remote...my iPhone. How convenient...

*Weight goes up! Hehehehe:apple:

I hear ya man, hence my sig. :apple:

Does Remote allow you to control the Apple TV instead of using the Apple Remote (the white infrared), or do you need to navigate with the white remote and then type on the iPhone? Would be better if you could use the iPhone exclusively to control it? (I find my Apple Remote to be very unresponsive - I press the button 5 times then suddenly the Apple TV responds to the 5 button presses - I'm never quite sure if I've not pressed the buttons hard enough or if the Apple TV is just lagging behind).

yeah but my macbook is not always on.

My perfect scenario would be to use your iPhone to Que. up a movie on the AppleTV in the movie room then go get snacks in the kitchen again use you iPhone to grab a song off the AppleTV and listen to while the movie has started. Lets go a step further and lets play an educational podcast for the kids in their room.

so the apple tv would need to be doing three things

1 playing an hd movie(AppleTV,receiver,TV)

2 sending a song to play in the kitchen(airport express, amplifier, speakers)

3 send a podcast to the kids room(airport express,receiver,tv)

for my third scenario to work apple would have to come out with an updated airpot express

What do you al think, I think apple could be here within a year?

Now if Apple added a DVR people might actually buy an AppleTV...

Seriously, not to be negative or start anything, but imagine how cool it would be to be able to program your DVR schedule using an iPhone application?

...And to add to that, have the ability to stream your recorded content to your iPhone and watch it anytime, anywhere?!?!

You want to change the way people look at DVRs and media boxes? This is how....

the remote program would be infinitely more useful to me if i could directly play songs from my itunes library on the iPhone and hook it up to speakers in another room. Whats the point of the middleman(airport express). Also it should be able to control Quicktime and Front Row:rolleyes:

I completely agree. One way would be to come out with an add-on DVR unit (same size as the AppleTV) which would stack. It could connect to the AT using the USB interface and would include different inputs such as cable cards, RF, etc. and huge hard drive for storage. Everything could then be controlled/programmed by using an iPhone or Touch.

AirPot express is not only a revolutionary wifi base station, it will also cook your meals - all controlled from your Mac. Fancy a soup? Just use iTunes to start it cooking it with AirPot. Or use your iPhone to remote control your AirPot while on the train back home so it's ready for when you arrive!

AirPot - coming soon to a stove near you.

2 things, make that three

First, I think Safari is a must. It seems to me to be very easy. Why haven't they done it?

Second, , or someone needs to come up with a wifi/infrared translator box and universal remote interface so phone can automatically tell your components what you want them to do. Maybe this could just be a usb dongle that plugs into TV.

Thirdly, and really this is a part of the Safari function, you must be able to use the iphone/touch as a wireless touch trackpad to use TV as a "computer."

Maybe the problem is that under apple's drm, TV counts as an ipod(unlimited # of devices per account) as apposed to a computer (only 5 per account). Our house has been up against that limit, and its frustrating.

a week later a it is here as first page news...

A little slow aren't we ;)

I have been using this for some days now and it is definitely better than using the white :apple:TV remote.

One comment, as good as the Remote app is, it should blend better with front row, specially for the :apple:TV. As it is now, you still need both remotes, the white one and your iPhone/touch to control it.

hmmm

the point is for it to be a remote so you don't have to 'hook it up'.

That would be the whole point

but it is not yet. As mentioned before, you need both remotes. Well, if you only search for songs and play them, you can ignore the white remote. The thing is that the Remote App does not navigate you through the :apple:TV menus. It can only access the library and control it from the iPhone/touch, or as mentioned before, will show the keyboard when you navigate, with the white remote, to the Youtube Search option or media search. So it is kind of half way there.

hmmmmm

yeah thats kinda the whole point

Enormously significant!

The race for living room dominance have been going on. While Sony has the PS3, and Microsoft's entry is the Xbox. Apple is coming in with a combination of stuff with the Apple TV at the center.

Apple's approach is even more nuanced and significant than that. They are developing their strategy with nothing at the center... well, OK, a big fat :apple: at the center, but not any single device.

Note the interplay:
  • The iPhone/iPod Touch is a remote for Apple TV and for any Mac's iTunes.
  • Any Mac is a remote for iTunes on any other Mac, an Apple TV, or an AirPort Express.
  • Any computer is a remote for any Mac, via MobileMe.
  • The little Apple remote is also, of course, a remote for Apple TV and for any Mac's Front Row.
  • I think I'm missing some...
As Apple adds more devices and services to this array, it grows exponentially. Apple TV is barely used by anyone, and MobileMe seems kinda stupid and over-priced... but taken together, they fit into a brilliant strategy of unified personal electronics.

Heck, I could even see the Apple Hi-Fi coming back, if it could actually communicate inside this scheme.

is there anyway to browse music/tv shows/movies that are shared no synced. I don't have anything synced on my apple tv i just stream it all and the remote does not show any info available.

Connect Remote to the mac containing the iTunes library instead, and then in the settings page set the remote speakers to the ATV.

This is good, BUT, you can't navigate to YouTube using the iPhone, and you can't make a selection of the results of your search, which means you need the original remote too. Fiddly. Add to that the problems with the iPhone constantly dropping its wifi connection and you have a rather frustrating overall user experience. :(

Just take an army of around 20 friends with iPhones/iPod Touches and connect to 20 computers in the apple store and blast the iTunes at MAX Volume

Why not just go into the store and start screaming? It's just as juvenile and requires no setup.

I agree with the other posters who mentioned it. It sucks that you still need two remotes to use the apple tv fully. I stumbled on this feature a few days ago on accident while showing my sister how the apple remote app works. She navigated to YouTube and started up the search function. The keyboard came up on my phone instantly.

If apple updates the app to allow full control abilities it would be excellent! The little white remote is too simple for it's own good. How cool would it be to have the arrow buttons available on the phone to navigate through the menus? I'd love to ditch that little remote all together. Just showing me my playlists is not enough.
