First, I think Safari is a must. It seems to me to be very easy. Why haven't they done it?

Second, , or someone needs to come up with a wifi/infrared translator box and universal remote interface so phone can automatically tell your components what you want them to do. Maybe this could just be a usb dongle that plugs into TV.

Thirdly, and really this is a part of the Safari function, you must be able to use the iphone/touch as a wireless touch trackpad to use TV as a "computer."

Maybe the problem is that under apple's drm, TV counts as an ipod(unlimited # of devices per account) as apposed to a computer (only 5 per account). Our house has been up against that limit, and its frustrating.

I think it would be awesome if you could hook headphones up to your iPhone and listen to what's being played on iTunes cause my headphones get much better sound quality than my Mbp.

That's been on the top of my wish list... Well... Close to the top, anyway.

You should be able to set up an iPhone/Touch on the same LAN as your computer to act as an AirTunes target. I like the idea of my phone in my shirt pocket with a pair of headphones being set to play my computer's audio. Should be able to do this from an :apple:TV, too.

And then you have the other way around. Why not let the iPhone/Touch be the "player" for all your AirTunes targets? Even if you're not streaming video, at least you could feed audio over WiFi in either direction.

Get an iPhone or Touch and you get a set of cordless headphones free. :D

Sounds like they were headed in this direction all along. Cordless peripherals and media streaming have finally evolved.

oh, another thing - is remote.app the reason Apple isn't offering the white remotes with their computers for free anymore?

Someone else mentioned that it was Apple costs cutting, but I'm kinda glad they did it, every time we get another MBP I end up with one in my desk drawer. There's a little pile of them in there.

Am i the only one that never got the remote app to work?

I had the same problem, according to others and Apple, there are two reasons why this is so. The first is because you don't have the right iPhone software build. So, backup your iPhone in iTunes and then restore it. This cleared up my issue; I was using the build you could download the day before iPhone 2.0 was available from iTunes.

The next thing is your firewall settings, make sure that iTunes is allowing incoming connections.

See here and here.

YES! I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR A YEAR! This is what I want to use mobileme and the idisk for! Ugh. So much potential...

I actually worked on a large project back in 2003-4 which did this - http://www.ist-world.org/ProjectDetails.aspx?ProjectId=fecc64211f2a4e7f9f354d1c72bfd564

It actually did a lot more too like synchronised video playback across a PDA and TV (for example showing a sign-language track on the PDA, or multi-angle video on a sports game), and learned your preferences for what you wanted to watch and recorded it automatically. It was pretty awesome but I think it will be some years before it reaches the mainstream.

Does Remote allow you to control the Apple TV instead of using the Apple Remote (the white infrared), or do you need to navigate with the white remote and then type on the iPhone? Would be better if you could use the iPhone exclusively to control it? (I find my Apple Remote to be very unresponsive - I press the button 5 times then suddenly the Apple TV responds to the 5 button presses - I'm never quite sure if I've not pressed the buttons hard enough or if the Apple TV is just lagging behind).

Yes, it is in fact a remote and it gives you not only remote controls, but a simplified interface to the content on the AppleTV. There is some latency with the AppleTV. Using a touch screen interface rather than a physical button won't make it any easier for you to distinguish whether or not you actually pressed the button, and I think the interface on Remote doesn't respond until the AppleTV sends back an answer to the request.

More to come?

Can't wait till the Remote App can control other parts of my computer. Maybe even dial home to turn appliances on and off. first thing's first... let me control Keynote, that would be awesome. my old powerbook doesn't have the remote control, so this would be great. and a preview of the next slide etc. awesome stuff. maybe speaker's notes.

Back to your mac

If you can control your AppleTV from Wifi at home, how about controlling it from the road? What would it take?;)

Seems like Apple could implement this pretty quickly using "Back to your Mac" MobileMe integration. Could be another perk for the service, although the only use that I can directly see is if Apple does implement a DVR strategy for the AppleTV. That way, if you forget to record a show and/or just want to keep track of what is going on with your machine, you can do it anywhere. Even better if the AppleTV could then stream the recorded show back to your iPhone.

Rating: Negative???

How can this story possibly get negative ratings? 20 people feel that this "finding out that the iphone can be a bonus keyboard for the apple tv" is negative? I don't understand

It's been like that as long as I've been around here. I think it's a combination of things: people hit the negative button accidentally, some people are just nattering nabobs, and some people are judging the story rather than the event. I'm convinced that it's mostly the first one, especially on overwhelmingly positive stories.

Oh, and I'm sure there's some trolls running around in there too.

remote limits network to 802.11g

Most wireless routers, like the airport extreme, will limit the overall network connection speed to match the slowest device on the network. So, won't using my iPhone (which is 802.11g) as a remote for my Apple TV, cause the Apple TV to run at G speed instead of N?

Yes, that is the case.
