OLED seems a little doubtful just because I'm not sure the technology is ready, but that would be really, really sweet.

I agree, and how I would freaking LOVE to be surprised by that in a couple weeks, but probably not till next summer. :(

I think June iPhone 4G 2010 will be a redesign with OLED and open to other networks and have iChat finally.

Greetings fellow human beings..

yes we to in New Zealand in habit this planet called earth (Sarcastically said I must add) home of Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings about 3 hours east of Australia.

Telecom is NZ's largest telecom company and has a reputation for 'launching products' i.e they talk big but rarely if ever deliver, which has meant massive government intervention and basically its a shell organization of 3 separate businesses, wholesale, private and data services

Think AT&T and Time Warner crossed but more evil,

""Think about pricing," the press quoted her as saying. "What has every telco in the world done in the past? It's used confusion as its chief marketing tool. And that's fine ... But at some level, whether they consciously articulate or not, customers know that's what the game has been." Former CEO Theresa Gattung, comments made whilst in the top job.

In 2006 the Forbes list of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women" ranked Gattung at number 49. In 2007 she "just missed making" the list

yea some people are just oblivious to the world around them so they dont realize that OLED screens are being used already in the mainstream. the samsung i890, the nokia n85 and the upcoming samsung i7500 are just a few examples i can think of off the top of my head.

I didn't realize that OLED had gotten that far. I knew that some small monochrome displays were being sold but hadn't paid that much attention. A little Google searching revealed that there are several models out as you point out, some with the same display size as the iPhone.

iSuppli had forecasted these would be sold in the hundreds of millions in 2010.

Given all that I guess there is an outside chance the new iPhone will include an OLED display.

My doubts are only because of the volumes Apple expects to ship and the possible consequences of a failure. If one particular high end model Nokia gets recalled because of the screen that is tough but not a disaster. Apple sells just one iPhone. If they sell ten million this year and next year we find that blue dye is fading faster than expected that is a huge problem.

Perhaps this is part of the high end/low end iPhone? The high end has an OLED screen and the low end has an LCD? They look the same to the software but the LCD can be less expensive. Not as many will be sold which might solve a supply problem and if they go bad there is still the LCD as a buffer.

Was that actually necessary? Theresa Gattung is gone, and Paul Reynolds is being "good" and actually making the company respectable again. Dropping $1 billion per year on infrastructure is excellent, and is why XT is now one of the best networks in the world. Although I don't plan to get an iPhone, official support would be very good.

True he has, which is in large part why I moved back to Telecom they've definitely changed tone, but the kind of policies that Theresa pushed are still self evident and far from being proactive XT aside (and i mean lets be honest thats been on the cards for a while due to the gradual decline of CDMA in the developed world and accelerated with Telstras shut down in OZ)

1 billion in investment yes, but have a closer look where its going and the current legislation Telecom has to give access to its EXCHANGES not roadside cabs, which is why they are spending so much in the core network and cabinetizing what they can, which is why the gov't has again threatened more intervention (pre election) and has proposed an independent network in its 1 billion matched scheme (post election), so that no one has this kind of control over what is and will increasingly be a strategic piece of infrastructure.

I think these "rumors" show that no one really has any idea what is going on, and people are just thinking up random crap.

Personally, I think the lack of any believable information at this point shows that WWDC is going to be pretty uneventful (by the standards of most) Just more involved promos of 3.0 and 10.6....which I am looking forward to.

Anyway here are the rumors I have heard:

Apple will be releasing a new iPhone with a unibody case carved out of pure platinum (the shavings are thrown away, not recycled). The screen will be carved out of pure diamond. The internal components will be all hand made by virgins. Each unit will be blessed by the dalai lama. The power cord that ships with the phone is not covered in rubber, but by the wing skin of terradactyl that were genetically engineered in a process similar to that in Jurassic Park. Each animal provides for only one cord, or else that would be cheap. It will come with a dock carved out of elephant tusks. The battery will run on power from stem cells. Also, it will not have a name, but will be known only by a symbol because it is too worthy to be called by a name. Each phone will have its own dedicated GPS satellite. It will be free.

If they don't at least come through on those features I am done with apple. I will just go back to my razr.

OMG! That made me LMFAO so hard my throat hurt :O LMFAO dalai lama! You sir, made my day.

carbon fiber anyone?

Does anyone remember that supposedly leaked photo from a few months ago which claimed to show the rear shell of the new iPhone? Didn't the material it was made of look very unique?

And then there was that patent recently for creating an aesthetically consistent carbon fiber surface.

I'm just saying... Think Different.

I heard that OLEDs one weakness is sunlight but both pictures looked pretty bad. It's bad in bright sunlight vs. 50% more battery power. Even though the quality looked bad in the picture I'd still have to choose the battery power. Thanks for the pics.

EDIT: Does the N85 have an ambient light sensor? If not, then that could be a factor in why it fairs so poorly in daylight. An ambient light sensor can really help in situations of bright sunlight.

OLED? I don't think so.
But manufacturing millions of OLED screens? I'm not sure suppliers are really ready for that (otherwise they'd drain all stock for a good while, OLED isn't that mainstream yet).

OLED screens don't sound too Farfetched to me. ;)

What is the benefit of OLED screens compared to LCD or LED?

OLED advantages:
-better contrast (OLED are 1500:1 and LEDs are like 500:1);creates far better picture quality with better blacks
-better battery life (OLEDs have no backlight like LCDs) and can save up to 40% in power
-thinner and lighter (possibly better for touchscreens. Could potentially give more space for a larger battery in the iPhone.)

OLED disadvantages:
-direct sunlight. Somebody already posted pictures. Since OLEDs have no backlight they fare worse. Picture can appear to be washed out or even looking like a blank screen. Potentially very bad for the iPhone since it's so heavily geared towards multimedia applications (picture, videos,& games)

A Japanese friend of my wife, who resides in Brazil claims to have an iphone mini. Sorry if that's a bit sparse, but that's all I got!

Cheers.

Wow, I am impressed.

That's just like humour, without being remotely funny.

How do you do that?

I was on a train from Oxford to London the other day. The other two travellers in our 'bay' appeared to work in the mobile industry and were talking about the iPhone - I overheard a couple of snippets.

Firstly, they were absolutely adamant that Orange (UK) was getting an Apple phone, mentioning the Orange head of engineering (or somesuch, can't remember the exact title) as their source - though saying he was initially reluctant to admit it.

They also suggested that the phone Apple would be getting was not the "iPhone", but was an "Apple phone" of some type. That way, they said, O2's exclusivity wouldn't be an issue.

They then went on to say that the phone would be more basic than the main iPhone - "more like an iPod Touch with GSM" (that's an exact quote, I remember it).

Personally I doubt there was any technical insight behind the statements. But the idea that there would be a basic model, and that Orange would be selling it, was the interesting bit.

That's all I overheard. Both of them fell asleep after that until arriving at Paddington so I couldn't get any more!

Thank you for this - it certainly seems plausible.
