Is this gonna be another iPhone keynote? Are real computers a thing of the past already??

In a way, yes. Macs are mature products & growth is incremental, maybe a couple %, at best, a year. To most consumers OS X is OS X, and frankly Apple can use it's stores and ads better to lure people in to the Mac.

The iPhone market, OTOH, is still in its infancy. It was only last year that the App Store opened. Large #s of people can still be swayed to switch to an iPhone over a Palm, Blackberry, Win Mobile, or even a plain old cell phone so its important for Apple to keep it fresh and get out as much new news on it as possible. The iPhone is where the money is at right now so that is where the Keynote will focus.

Just ask Kevin Rose ...

... Kevin Rose will know for sure ... someone Tweat him so we can confirm these yawners.

I was on a train from Oxford to London the other day. The other two travellers in our 'bay' appeared to work in the mobile industry and were talking about the iPhone - I overheard a couple of snippets.

Firstly, they were absolutely adamant that Orange (UK) was getting an Apple phone, mentioning the Orange head of engineering (or somesuch, can't remember the exact title) as their source - though saying he was initially reluctant to admit it.

They also suggested that the phone Apple would be getting was not the "iPhone", but was an "Apple phone" of some type. That way, they said, O2's exclusivity wouldn't be an issue.

They then went on to say that the phone would be more basic than the main iPhone - "more like an iPod Touch with GSM" (that's an exact quote, I remember it).

Personally I doubt there was any technical insight behind the statements. But the idea that there would be a basic model, and that Orange would be selling it, was the interesting bit.

That's all I overheard. Both of them fell asleep after that until arriving at Paddington so I couldn't get any more!

It amazes me that people think Apple could get around an exclusivity clause simply by calling the product an "Apple Phone" instead of an iPhone. While there might be get-out clauses for either side, these agreements are otherwise tightly sewn-up by highly-paid corporate law firms. They will use general terms like "cellular phone/handheld communications device" as well as trademarked product names. So the "Ha! it's an aPhone" scenario is just not going to happen.

...and the faces of everyone you photograph show the faint imprint of the Apple logo.

Now that's branding!

Actually what you said made me thought of this: what if they use Apple logo as a flash? That would be a neat solution and won't require additional hole or space made just for the flash...

If you think of it this way, glowing Apple logo may not be as far fetched as we thought...

That's a rumor, not an ad.
"Rumors says that Samsung is planning to release the Omnia Pro with an 3.5 inch Amoled Touchscreen with an WVGA resolution 800×480 Pixel."

No, in Australia the TV ad says its OLED and they are featuring the bright screen.

More networks!

From what I've read, Apple won't release the iPhone in the USA on your other network because it doesn't support 3G. What's the excuse here in the UK? We have 5 networks; O2 (iPhone's exclusive carrier), Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and The 3 Network. All of these support 3G on loads of handsets.

It's not an issue for me being on 02, although I did move from T-Mobile who I preferred. But I know people who have had coverage issues with 02 in the past and aren't prepared to make the jump. The number of times I've heard "I'd get an iPhone, but I want to stay with Vodafone/Orange/T-Mobile" - Apple need to stop this silly exclusivity, at least this side of the pond.

Yes I agree I don't quite understand why apple stay with o2.

I am with Vodafone and don't want to move
1 because I have all the famly phones with vodafone in various stages of contact and it is too much of a pain to move and don't want 2 bills.
2 vodafone still has better coverage in remote areas of scotland where I work occasionally.

I think most people that will move to o2 have done so already and if it was opened up to other networks apple would clean up the rest of potential customers and sell a shed more iphones

twittering about a 3rd gen iPhone...is it safe to say that this company just ruined their chances of getting said 3rd gen iPhone? :p

The "excuse" is that they have an exclusive agreement with Orange, from which they presumably get a substantial financial benefit.

Eww orange having the iPhone I puked in my mouth, o2 was one o the best choices for the iPhone, orange is just too erm CRAP(excet the cool adverts with the witch and her friend about the cinema oh and the free cinema tickets on a Wednesday) also OLED on the iPhone I highly doubt that, apple wouldn't spend that much on screens and it would be horrible in daylight. I think apple will stick with LCD screens well until a better than OLED screen comes out, I think the iPhone will definitely be aluminium again maybe with a matte paint, but i'm possitive it will be aluminium and they'll stop selling the MacBook White so the complete apple range is alu. I do believe they might have a glowing logo or a logo with a hidden flash, definitely a better camera + video recording even though they didn't mention it at the 3.0 keynote, I'm wishing they add(which I think they will) add a front camera/iSight, and hopefully better battery.

Live Streamed?

Is WWDC normally live streamed or just live updates via the web? I can't remember.

I'm keeping my current second gen iPhone until 2010 when hopefully Verizon can get the iPhone.

I don't think Apple has done a live stream of any of their events in years and years. They will probably post a video of the keynote a few hours later...just like their other keynotes

The original iPod came out on Nov 10 with my birthday just two days later... Made myself wait til the bday to get it. It was the best birthday presentto myself EVER!!

It would be great if one of the future models would come around at that time. November 10 is my bday!

good chances to see OLED screen

Actually, this is the least believable part. It would be great to have, and would indeed improve battery life, but it's not at all clear to me that the market is there for OLED that would let Apple bet the farm on it.

WWDC, we get live updates via the web!

2010 for Verizon iPhone is still a push, it's possible. I would bet on seeing it available on Verizon in 2011.

really?

An OLED screen?
I fail to see how that's possible considering the only production model oleds out there now run around 3 grand for an 11 inch display. Am I missing something? Seems like pure fiction.

Does - OLED screens improve overall battery life?

Yes. LCD's work by selectively filtering a white backlight. In normal use, only 8 to 10% of the light being generated makes it to your eye. So when you see a nice bright image on your display, imagine how bright the actual light is in the back -- if you took the front off it would be too bright to look at directly.

OLED's directly produce light on their front surface, so every photon they produce goes to your eye. LED's are generally pretty efficient too, OLEDs aren't as good as CCFLs in the LCDs, but still pretty good over all.

So basically the difference is that the lighting system gets about 80-90% more efficient, and that seriously impacts battery life.

OLED screens are becoming more common in devices everyday; besides, Apple would hardly be 'betting the farm' by including them.

The Cowon s9 multimedia player has an 3,3" amoled screen and is priced like the ipod touch. So costs should not be a factor.
