Yes. you won't be able to buy or install official iPhone applications until June.

So what about us canadians who have the Iphone?

I guess the first problem is that the software update will kill our jailbreaks and then I guess the second problem will be:

IF someone in canada manages to unlock the phone with the software update installed will they be able to buy the apps?

I mean think about the iTunes store... us poor Canadians have gotten the shaft on that one for the longest time.

"- No unlocking or the ability to distribute applications in a method other than the iTunes Stores
- No obscene, pornographic content, or other materials that may be found objectionable"

Oh great, we have Apple trying to leverage their monopoly on iPhone development. Rather than making iTunes app distribution attractive enough so developers will want to use it, Apple is forcing it as the only way. While Apple is trying to milk profits this way, it's certainly not good for consumers or developers.

It's also frightening that Apple will censor what kinds of programs are acceptable. This stifles creativity and is a consequence of the first problem. If apps can only be distributed through iTunes, Apple would not want to be seen as responsible for something "obscene." Naturally, if Apple didn't chain their developers to iTunes distribution, a much wider range of apps could be created. So much for freedom...

Huh?!!!!!!!!??? I can develop my iPhone app, but I can't test it on the iPhone!! What the ---! What possible value does that provide. How in the world am I supposed to test touch gestures like pinch, reverse pinch, slide, etc??! We waited since June '07 for a non-testable SDK! Are you kidding me! grrrrr

The only reason I really want that beta is the 802.1X support. By June I'll have graduated and getting on the campus network won't be an issue!

Open Source Apps?

The key question for me is whether it will be possible to develop an open source app without paying $99. In other words will people who download the free SDK be able to:
(1) install the app that they write on their phone without the $99 fee,
(2) be able to put up the source code for the app on the internet so that others can do #1. Or is this against the license agreement?

Yeah... I mean it isn't like they have an obligation to AT&T to prevent people from using the phone on other networks or anything... at&t certainly wouldn't sue them if they didn't make an honest effort to keep people from unlocking the phone, particularly with the official toolset

Apple is under contract with AT&T to secure the phone from unlocking. Even if you disagree with this, nothing can change this. They _have_ to prevent unlocking in anyway they can. Otherwise, they can be held liable.

Of course Apple isn't going to allow you to release applications with adult themed content. If you want to do that, you still have the option of creating a web based application for the iPhone.

I was hoping I would be able to get my Apps onto my own iPhone for testing before June. I hope somebody figures out a way to do that. I know I can't put my apps out for distribution, but the ability to do personal testing at least would be good...

Wirelessly posted (Apple Communication Device: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I hate roadmaps. It's an announcement about an announcement.

I'm installing now, so I'm not 100% but I would guess no. If we're lucky we can use the iPhone as a debugger like demonstrated. Since we don't have 2.0, I would guess it's not likely we can use them.

can you post a direct link to the download please?

Thanks :)

Do anyone know if you can use an external Keyboard? Any word on peripherals?

P6

Edit: Android is starting to look better an better.

I agree that people should at least wait to see what is censored before getting their noses out of joint.

On the other hand, while nobody really wants to see porn in the iTunes store, it will be interesting to see if they censor religious materials, or ban swastikas and other trivial sops to the hyper-sensitive lamer crowd.

The first thing I thought of was that when I used several iterations of WinCE/PalmPC/PocketPC's a few years ago, one of the most popular games on the app download sites was always some kind of strip poker.

It will be interesting to see if when Apple says "no porn," they are talking about actual porn or just nudity. ;)

Here are all the screenshots i had posted to the other thread

One would have to assume MS will work on a mobile version of Office for the iPhone, right?

Otherwise, I guess things like NeoOffice could start popping up, so the iPhone can finally have word processing built in, to satisfy all the WM users.

Anyone heard any rumors to this effect?

PS- As an iPhone user, we are finally starting to realize the potential of these devices, and making it easy to forget the price tag. Name another company that supports their product SO WELL, even months or years after it was released!

Makes me proud to be an :apple: die hard.

But if it turns out the emulator won't run or won't run code correctly, you're kind of SOL until you can deploy code to an iPhone to test in June, no?

Crap. Yeah, you're right. Well, I guess I finally ran out of reasons not to upgrade after 5 years...
