Does anyone really think all 100,000 of those downloads are by software developers? I'd bet that 90% of the downloads were done by clueless end-uses who have no need for, or ability to use an SDK. If I'm right that means 10,000 developers did download the SDK. Even that is a huge number. Maybe it's 98% not 90% 2,000 real developers seems about right

Even if you were right (and your numbers are just guesses and very low ones at that), what is exciting for many young unaffiliated programmers (of which I am not one) it to start writing apps. Some might get lucky and write an app that will really catch on. This is a very democratic process (even with the limitations that Apple imposed).

100,000 downloads? How many of those are from the same people asking what an SDK is?

Show me 10,000 applications. That do things. Useful things. Then I'll be excited.

I was just going to type something like this. There were allot of people asking about where they could download it thinking this thing gave them instant access to the games and apps. I'm sure that number of people won't be huge, but we know there are allot.

I admit: my pilot iPhone app is going to be nothing more than a common raster drawing program, the sort of thing that's been done and redone since Bill Atkinson changed the name of LisaGraf to QuickDraw. But if I do my job, it'll be so fun to use, it'll be something you just have to have. It'll be worth way more to you than the $5 would have been.

When I'm finished, could somebody clone it, and offer it for free? Well, it'd be pretty crummy of them, and I don't know what they'd get out of it, but I guess they could. It's my job to keep my program fresh, exciting and bug free, and let me tell you -- with your $5, and the potential $5 of many other users, there's a lot more incentive to innovate than there is for the clone artist.

Good point. Stop posting and get to work! You've got programming to do!!! ;)

The interest in SDK apps is real

The interest from companies in developing native iPhone apps is staggering. I’m fielding several inquiries per day from companies who want real apps built today. To help developers and projects find each other I’ve created a community called iPhoneIncubator.com. Post your resume or project.

I'm just curious: everyone keeps saying that the iPhone/Touch apps will be out in June. Why not sooner?

The SDK and iPhone/iPod 2.0 Firmware are still in beta (i.e. not ready for prime-time yet). Plus it's likely that Apple needs more time to prepare the App Store.
