Just a spec bump would be nice.

That iPhone 5 design still look great.

In my aesthetic opinion the iPhone 5/5s/SE remains peak design. Very BRAUN deisgn language inspired, perfectly dimensioned. Sharp, classic lines without being "square". Playful yet functional buttons. Very pocket-able, and professional looking.

Probably the last model that Steve Jobs approved personally.

This is one for the MOMA... (along with the IBM Thinkpad)

Why is this a surprise? That's a 2012 design packed with 2015's technology in 2018... Are they really doing us a favor?
It's already vintage, and pretty soon it will be deemed "obsolete" by Apple. I feel bad for the SE users as this was a great option for those that love the form and one-handed use, but I think, it's time to move on and embrace the new phones coming up. I believe this is the last remaining phone at this size across all phone manufacturers.

The only remaining market for the SE is India, Africa, and other emerging markets. Even the Wistron plant in India is starting to build iPhone 6s.

Apple will probably continue manufacturing iPhone SE for select markets. But hardly anyone wants the SE except for those looking for a cheap phone. The 2-3% of consumers who want a small phone isn't going to convince Apple to build an updated SE when the vast majority want 6" or larger.
Lots of people I know are very irritated at the trend of smart phone sizes. They would prefer smaller phones but it’s simply impossible to find top specs and camera in a small device. For me personally, small size trumps any features a larger phone may have.

if I want a huge device toasting the side of my head, I'll just use my iPad for that, lol. I can't embrace a new phone if it's too big to get my arms around :(

SE really exists just for the price point. If the SE was such a hot seller, Apple would have spent the effort updating it by now.

You are not listening to - or reading - or paying attention to what many on this thread alone have already written.

The iPhone SE does not exist solely for the price point (in the First World).

Rather: The size matters; the ergonomics matter; the fact that it can easily fit into a jeans or chino pocket matters; the fact that you can use it one-handed matters; the lovely long battery life matters. The headphone jack matters.

The screen? The keys? Look, I'm not about to write In Memory of Times Past on it - being able to send relatively short texts or WhatsApp messages are all that are of interest to me.

Apple continues to manufacture and sell new iPhone 6 32GB units for select markets.

Many consumers in emerging markets want the iPhone 6 form factor but simply can't afford the price.

Sadly, I suspect that you're right.

Apple probably has data that goes like this:

  • If low price point X is met, 70% of people would buy the phone simply because of the price point - and not the size.
  • Then out of those 30% of those who want an iPhone SE for its size and couldn't get one, 20% would buy a larger phone if the price was right...
  • Then that means that there's not much point producing the SE if a large phone can be made to fit low price point X

A couple years ago I decided to give the Plus series a try with a iPhone 7 Plus. I love the portrait-mode camera and I like that in landscape Safari gives me actual tabs.

But I don't like the thing in my pocket. It's too big and heavy. I was planning to get an iPhone SE 2 because when I'm out I don't need a large screen; this rumour is disappointing.

Seriously Apple, just put an A11 in the current model and call it a day. Everyone will be happy.

I was holding onto my 5s waiting for an SE refresh, and ended up using a hand-me-down 6s Plus for a while.

I always thought the small form factor was perfect for me, until my old eyes got used to that nice large screen.

Well, I guess my wife is never buying a new iPhone then.

Now if they discontinue it to introduce a new ~5" model in the same form factor, then that would be fine. Even if they charge more. For years the iPhone in that size was a flagship model. Why does that have to change now? I don't get why they can't make an SE and charge more for it. It would probably sell at least as well as the iPad.

The SE and the X are the only iPhones in the current lineup that I "like".
The others are too big and feel a bit too flimsy because they are so light-weight.

I really hope they continue with that form-factor. The SE was likely very profitable as it was basically re-using a lot of parts from the 5S and 6S - and the smaller screens are usually cheaper to make than the bigger ones.
Screens are what makes big iPhones expensive.

Just bought my wife the 6S (5C got water damaged) because we both like the headphone jack, home button, and entering in a password. 6S because she wanted a bigger screen than the SE. As for me, I also want those same things in a smaller form factor and almost bought the current SE. But I thought I'd wait to see if a SE2 (with same form factor) comes out.

The SE is a truly classic form factor (HP jack, home button, and allows entry of PW the old fashioned way).
Don't like biometrics. If I need to change my PW I can do so. I can't change my face or fingerprints. And it is just creepy.

PLEASE!!! SE2!!!

Exactly. Plus size is extremely heavy and too wide to hold comfortably in one hand, let alone thumb type. Even the 8 and 7 form is a bit bulky in a pocket. SE is perfect without a case holding and in pocket. Tablet at home, SE on the go. Don't even need a faster chip. Fine as is. Edge to edge display would be nice tho.

I totally get it, that's why I feel bad for the SE users. I, myself, can't wait for the X Plus but it's what I prefer to have and use. Like I said, this form factor is going away from all the phone manufacturers. I don't know any other similar sized phones out on the market.

This thread doesn't represent the world market, which Apple serves.

The vast majority of consumers are consuming more media on the go. Apple itself is producing TV shows and series, intended to be streamed on its devices. Wireless carriers are offering multi-gigabyte plans to customers because everyone is using their phones for media consumption. Everyone is spending more hours per day on their screens.

Ironically, it's the many posters here who are not paying attention to the changes in market preferences. There's a whole bunch of hand waving arguments saying why small phones should be updated without looking at actual trends.

Phablets to Overtake Regular Smartphone Shipments by 2019, with Phablets Expected to Hit 1 Billion Units by 2021, According to IDC

Why discontinue it? Isn't the Apple way to just leave a product in the lineup for years when they don't want you to have it as an option, but its popular with buyers?

To me the design looks a bit outdated. They should at least look like iPhone 6/7/8.

I personally much prefer the "old" design. Not only do I like the size, I also *vastly* prefer the location of the power-button. Starting with the 6 the power button ends up being opposite the volume buttons, and it's far too easy to accidentally hit the wrong buttons that way. Seems like a fundamental design-flaw to me, but hey, crappy design is Apple's new normal, so I guess we better get used to it!

I was under the impression that the SE sold like crazy. No idea why they would be discontinuing it.
What would give you that impression? A couple hundred posters on MacRumors? :)

The estimates I’ve seen imply sales of about 20 million a year. 200+ million iPhones are sold to those that want a larger screen, even though it’s more expensive.

The SE does just ok in lower cost markets, including the US for prepaid services, but only because it’s the least expensive iPhone available. They also sell a few to those that find the 4.7” form factor too large.

I think the SE stays around as the least expensive iPhone for at least two more years, then the 6S/7 will take over that price point. Sold mostly in lower costs markets where Apple is currently selling the SE and iPhone 6 (yes 6, not 6S). Maybe they will remove 3D Touch or other slight tweaks to reduce costs on the 4.7” models.

And that's a strong statement of good design and functionality.

I use this model and can't see myself upgrading to a bigger phone. It's small, tasteful and discrete. Oh, and if I happen to drop it, I can buy another + a pair of AirPods for the price of a X's repair.

This, this, this oh so very much THIS.

I DO NOT want a bigger phone.
No thank you.

Give me an iPhone X-SE (Same form factor, with upgraded internals/OLED). I will pay for a more expensive iPhone SE, but I don't want anything bigger

Maybe the SE is like the Mac mini: everyone swears that they love it but nobody actually buys it.

It's weird to think that somewhere in the world, there's a production line dedicated to the Mac mini.

I'm imagining that it's in a cavernous dusty attic, with steam-punk Victorian era looking equipment that gets started up once every month when a paper order comes in via pneumatic tube.

I certainly hope they refresh the SE, otherwise my wife is never going to get a new smart phone.

Same here... has nothing to do with price. She wants a small phone and the SE fit the bill when her 5s died.

Nobody is buying it because they haven't updated it in years. The Mac Mini was the last Mac I bought... still use it... will most likely never buy another one. I have moved on to buying from companies that make what I want to buy, rather than expecting me to just buy what they want to make.
