3 GB is the new baseline, to be shared by the budget iPhone SE 2 / iPhone 9 and the iPad 7, the latter frequently available for just $249.

What are the odds this would have eSIM support like the current/standard iPhone models do?

It could make sense if they market it as "iPhone 9: the missing link" or something like that. An iPhone 9 was never released and it would fit betweeen the 8 and the X if the rumored specs are true.
My vote is for iPhone 9¾.

Eventually I'll need to retire my 7 plus and I think my next iPhone will be a lesser model in power and size because of the costs.
That $599 deal with sprint was the best hope for me. Maybe this will be my next driver.

ditto. But I have not found a compelling reason to upgrade my 7+. Albeit, I will likely buy a new IPP asap.

An ad for an iPhone 9 would just be a close-up shot of it with The Beatles' "Revolution 9" (because Steve Jobs loved The Beatles) playing as background music.

I love faceid and all, but i'd seriously consider ditching my iphone X for one of these if it comes with the a13 and a 256GB storage option. faceid is no fun when wearing a face mask.
And TouchID doesn’t work when the finger is even slightly damped either. (Which is like 90% of the time for my sweaty hands!)

At $399 it shouldn't have a glass back. How will this phone be worse than an iPhone 7? No Force Touch hardware?
How do you come to that conclusion? No glass back means no wireless charging which is a key feature that was missing from iPhones for too long. The lack of 3D touch just brings it in line with the latest 11/Pro/Max trio that have already jettisoned it, meaning unfortunately it's already a feature without a future.

If production gets delayed, it's understandable and no big deal due to the circumstances. Besides, based on rumors, it looks like an updated 8 and not the same as SE as many have hoped.

No one wants to buy an “old” numbered phone.

Most people don’t know the model phone they’re purchasing, or simply don’t care.

IMHO price is what matters to the masses (the XR and and 11 are a testament to that); if this new iPhone (regardless of name) satisfy’ s your requirements and fulfils the vast majority of tasks compared it’s more expensive siblings do, it’ll sell like hotcakes.

I can’t imagine 256GB will be available. Even the XR is only 64GB/128GB.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised at 32/64 or 32/128 either, but the rumor is 64/128.

Releasing a device in 2020 with bezels like this, the same as iPhones built in 2007, is just pathetic.
Yes sure.. when it's truly a low price phone, I'l take it. But not like this for 400 - 500 €. When looking in this price range, I would go for some iPhone X or iPhone XR etc. even though I would really like to have options for smaller devices. When going smaller, it's even more important to get as much screen in as possible.

No way they call it iPhone 9! ... No one wants to buy an “old” numbered phone.
Quite to the contrary, there are a lot of people out there who aren‘t addicted to having the highest numbered everything, who would happily buy an “iPhone 9” if it did what they wanted from a smartphone (I know a bunch like that).
