Finally...now the SE fanboys can stop crying (for at least five minutes) about not having a new version of their magic little phone ;)
There's nothing little about the 2nd generation SE, unfortunately.

The 8 Plus (now discontinued) was arguably apples best iPhone they ever made. While it may be gone now, it's hard to believe (unfathomable) that there won't be a replacement for it in the future.
They're well aware of the eyestrain issues some people experience when looking at their dreadful flickering OLED screens and it's extremely unlikely that none of the higher up managers have problems with PWM too.

My guess — there will be an 8 Plus LCD device replacement some day down the line

I can bet it will be iPhone 8 with a different name. As iPhone 8 owner I hardly see the point. And have to admit it’s very lazy (as usual) approach to design from Apple.

It isn't like Apple isn't making other models too. Lazy would have been just another price cut to the 8. Up until a couple of days ago the 8 was still selling for $449. This is $399 and is superior in every way (except lacking 3D Touch) to it. If my 8 was in perfect order I probably wouldn't upgrade though either. But rather than pay $349 for a swap out I'll be getting a new SE.

The Price is little! Also it is still the smallest/lightest option you have for a current/new iPhone. I'm hoping the 5.4" 12 will smaller though.

Because it doesnt have an OLED screen, for me is a NO NO iPhone.

why cheap OLED screens are crap and cause eye strain among some users ”the flickering ” - More important are the nit brightness figures and the LCD Apple screens perform very well in bright sun light -true blacks so what I say

The best reason for me to get an SE (upgrade from my iPhone 7) is the Dual SIM. I have both US and European SIM cards so this would allow both to be in the phone at once.

Tim Cook is not the guy that get it and it's getting a whole lot worse for the product lineup. The right update for early 2020 is iPhone 8S, iPhone 8S Plus, iPhone SE 2.

I'll be curious how the SE camera performs with the mix of old sensor + new A13 image processing. Apple is certainly pushing the photo quality on their site.

I'm selling my iPhone 11 Pro to buy 2 new SE's for my wife and I. She sorely needed to upgrade her 7, and while I take a lot of photos with phones, I found that I didn't use the extra bells and whistles on the 11 Pro nearly as much as I thought I would. The ultra-wide & 2x zoom lenses are kind of blurry and not really useful 99% of the same. The only thing I'll miss is Night Mode, but again, most of my photos are taken with the standard wide lens + natural light.

I miss the iPhone 8 form factor, so I'm excited for the SE.

The Apple website shows that the XR has "liquid" retina display while the SE has just regular retina like the 8. Biggest factor for me is that the SE was not available yet. I bought the XR a month ago while I could get one. I like the bigger display and Face ID too. My carrier offered a $100 trade in credit for my 7 too so the difference was only $100 from the $399 Se

The only comparative factor of any significance for me is price. 128GB SE for £469, I can just about afford. 128GB XR for £679, I cannot. It doesn't matter which one is "better" if one is unaffordable. I love the concept of the fuller screen without the thick bezels, but liking something more doesn't affect affordability. I'm just glad that there is, effectively, a "brand new iPhone" which will be supported for many years to come that I can actually purchase. I thought for a while that this wouldn't be the case.

Obviously a false comparison. The iPhone SE is designed for people who had an iPhone 8, 7, 6s, etc. People who already bought an XR would be looking for an iPhone 11.
Or, someone like me that just went to my provider to buy the SE2 to replace my SE1 only to find out I could buy the XR for only $70 more. Honestly, I don't need all the bells and whistles of the XR but I figured why not? It is only $70 more.

I did hesitate a little though as I wait for 3 to 5 years before getting a new phone and wondered how well the XR would hold up in my personal cycle and this article helped relieve that concern. ;)

If only Apple sold other LCD phones with a larger than 4.7” screen... Wait, they do, two different models, the Xr and the 11.

And presumably for those who have issues with LCD screens, Apple should have continued CRT Macs. And all other manufacturers have kept LCD phones in their lineup explicitly for those with issues with OLED screens.

Macrumors seem to be speculating on this claim that iphone SE uses the iphone 8 camera lens. Either way Apple have stated categorically in their marketing that the iphone SE has the “best single camera system in any iphone” so its better than the XR camera on this basis alone.

It could be using the XR camera. The iPhone 8 camera didn’t support portrait mode, and it didn’t support extended dynamic range 4K 30fps video. It’s a better camera *system* than the XR because it’s using the A13 for some enhancements, but since it’s not using the 11’s camera it doesn’t support night mode or deep fusion.

I upgraded from a 6s to a X, so this would be a downgrade for me. But for my mother who is still on a 6s and siblings still on a 5s and 7, this would likely be a welcome upgrade. Especially for my mother who got an aftermarket 6s, which is behaving wonky since she got it.

depends on what you value:

downgrades:
OLED vs LCD
Camera (TBD)
FaceID (preference)

upgrades:
A13
WiFi 6
Gigabit LTE

The notch is a modern design feature? Umm, more like a clumsy solution for an almost full screen. Tired old issue, I know, but you MacRumors guys brought it up.

Apple iPhone product line is filled with 3 phones to many.
Clean it up already.

Apple is selling only 4 different models at the moment (5 if you count the 2 sizes of pro). All the rest are discontinued. Which 3 do you suppose they should get rid of?

The XR/11 is just so bulky. Compared to the SE2 it’s going to feel massive. The display is barely any wider than the 8/SE2, just longer and with the corners rounded off and with a notch.

Since all really new iPhones released since 2017 share that design, everybody with some knowledge about Apple’s iPhones will recognise this design as newer and the iPhone 6/7/8/SE design as older. Sometimes ‘modern‘ simply means current or more recent.

As the owner of an iPhone 6 who has tried an 11, the 11 feels bulky and thick and heavy, while the 6 (and other phones of that form factor, so the 6s, 7, 8, and new SE) all feel light and thin. Yes, the design is dated, but it works great and feels right.
