I still think Apple is going to have a hard time justifying the $300 difference between the SE 4 and iPhone 16. An extra camera (most people aren't using), camera control button (not going to say much more here but... mehh). Outside of this? Internals are going to be the exact same. I just don't see it.

Comparing the rumored SE 4 vs iPhone 16
- Essentially same frame
- same CPU
- same RAM
- same base 128GB storage
- same Apple Intelligence
- same screen and paltry 60hz refresh
- more than likely very similar battery life
- Notch vs Dynamic Island
- Apple Modem vs Qualcomm (too early to tell)
- camera button (not really the needle mover for most people)
- extra camera (i'd be willing to bet most people aren't using - and if you are, you bought the Pro/Max)

This basically says Dynamic Island, Camera Button, and extra camera most people don't use is worth $300 more?? Am I missing something?
Yep this is also why I think the SE won’t have the DI and they’ll stick with the dated looking notch. Also wouldn’t surprise me if there was a smaller battery.

Camera performance on base iPhone's is very mediocre so that alone will always keep me off the non-Pro phones but I'm a Pixel Pro user and once you experience a Pixel Pro camera you won't go back to anything less but I'm speaking for me personally. If someone is coming from a base iPhone, they will be perfectly happy with a SE 4. I don't think missing the Dynamic Island is a big detracting factor nor is gaining Apple Intelligence since it has a long way to go to prove itself useful for a lot of people but the $200 cheaper and newer chipset will definitely go a long way to sell more of these than the base 15.

The price will be the biggest draw. SE's aren't aimed at camera enthusiasts; they're aimed at the price conscious.

yep, i'm convinced it'll kill any remaining market for the 15 and will probably capture a chunk of market from the 16.

But maybe they already know this and are concered about their flat sales of the 16? This is their way to discount the 16 without outright discounting the 16.

Based on current iPhone 14 pricing (AU) this new SE will see a hefty price increase.

Apple selling the 128GB SE for AU$799 and the 128gb 14 for $1049.

I’d wager we will see the price of the base model SE4 increase by a huge 30% (with a storage increase to 128GB)
fellow aussie here, the 14 pricing makes no sense to be honest. It's not a lot different from the 13 and yet 13's have been clearing out at places like OW & JB for 799 or less.

I don't believe they can up the price of the SE substantially as it's positioned to take on the low end of the market.

Be careful touting Apple having "solved" the Intel modem issues

If they'd truly solved it, they'd already have their own modems in all the other iPhones

There's probably a reason they are going with the SE for their first one ... if it's "just ok", the SE buyer is a good stop to dump the tech onto and see how it goes

Bean counters like to keep all the beans and they're still giving beans to Qualcomm for some reason

I wish Apple the best, but the homemade modem will be based on the tech they bought from Intel. The Intel models were horrible when Apple last used them. Poor reception in low signal areas. Qualcomm all the way here.
It has been nearly six years since Apple acquired Intel’s modem technology, and significant improvements have been made since then. Many of the issues associated with the older Intel models—such as poor reception in low-signal areas—have been addressed through optimizations and updates. Today, the technology in use is no longer comparable to those earlier devices. Additionally, while Qualcomm remains an important player, Apple’s technological landscape has evolved considerably. 😅

That all sounds good, but Apple has still yet to release an iPhone using their own modem tech while continuing to pay licensing fees to Qualcomm (which I'm sure they hate)

The proof will very much be in the pudding

I suspect they're all X57 but now use X60 firmware and therefore identify as such. It seems unlikely Apple would launch with X57 then update to X60. The specs remain the same - LTE Advanced only.

Yeah since my iPhone 13 has true X60 modem compared to the SE3’s one. Especially aggregating multiple types of sub 6 GHz all at once w compared to the x57 which is even worse than a X50

Don’t forget same USB-C (2.0)

Sad way of reading the room, Tim Apple. We need Touch ID and the Lightning connector, and Bill Gates needs to bring back Outlook Express! #goodolddays

You had me getting wistful until...

I think Apple (at least based on rumors) not using iPhone Mini size/form factor is a huge miss. A large single 48MP sensor, with A17 Pro or A18, would have been amazing in a Mini size. The iPhone lineup has big and small versions of the iPhone and iPhone Pro. At least do an SE Mini and SE.

I’m admittedly not nearly as knowledgeable on the reasoning as Apple, so what do I know.

YES, yes, yes, yes! My iPhone 8’s battery is dying. Been watching MR’s update articles on the SE 4 breathlessly and hoping the old battery would keep up ‘til April.

Just get the battery replaced? Most repair shops can do it (particularly on the older iphones) and you can always pay apple’s ridiculous price if you want it done there, and it will still be loads cheaper than the SE.

I’ve replaced my 8+ battery three times now, and it is working amazingly well still. Touch ID club unite! (Both of us)
