Apple is still doing the 8GB thing in 2024 on phones too?

Minimum 12GB, come onnnnn

The vast majority of people don't need 12GB RAM on a phone. Most of them don't need 5G either tbh. There's all sorts of features that people seem to think are essential because they are used as marketing crutches to persuade Fandroiders that their phone is better than the iPhone they can't afford but its a bit silly really.

I'm glad to hear they want to make sure the new SE can run Intelligence. I'm hoping the new entry level iPad will do so too but when I posited this idea a few people said I was being ridiculous. If the budget phone can do it, surely the entry iPad will. I'm hoping the iPad will have an M1 or similar. That would give it 8GB of RAM and AI features.

faster bandwidth everyone takes advantage of, so 5G is a must, everything you do on internet its time consuming and time is money.
on the other side..to have more ram to have everything in the background and not to be refreshed every 10 min is also a nice thing not to mention every OS can use more Ram,including iOS thats adds features
Thank god Apple move on and not listen people like you, otherwise we would be stuck on 3.5" iphone with 4gb of ram and 3G that is sold for $1000 because “the vast majority dont need x and y”

They have to screw up this product somehow, otherwise it will cannibalize other iPhone models.
Otherwise it will probably be the very first iPhone I buy.
I hope that they won't screw it up!
Take a look at the price difference between the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE 1 and remember that they are basically the same tech in different boxes.

That's a huge $250-$450 difference for no apparent reason (Memory isn't that expensive..)

Great video from 2016:

The most valuable tech company in the world, has billions of dollars as cash. How hard it can be to make iPhone 11 onwards to run Apple Intelligence? Let the old devices to run online and newer ones in the device. iPhone 15 can't run AI will be a scandal as Apple was talking about how good their Neural Engine is during every Keynote since 2007!!

This is a bit tongue in cheek, but I thought they were touting how they were able to get Apple Intelligence working on low RAM machines? This is the same amount of RAM that their Pro line of Macs includes, so it seems like that comment may have been a bit inaccurate?
8GB IS indeed low RAM when it comes to any AI features. They weren't kidding. 😅

It's practically certain that AI will bring a RAM bump across the Apple product lineup

While Android phones for many years shipped with 12GB of RAM, AAPL cheaped out so much on this stuff knowing 4GB, 6GB would never be enough for longevity. But that’s what Tim wants, everyone to buy a new iPhone ever year. Force/built in obsolescence is the name of Tim’s game. Sad really that Apple is still selling tech products with insufficient RAM under the guise of battery life!

SE 2016 - A9 chipset and 12MP camera from iPhone 6s while the rest are from iPhone 5s/6
SE 2020 - A13 chipset from iPhone 11 while the rest are from iPhone 8
SE 2022 - A15 chipset from iPhone 13 while the rest are from iPhone 8 [aside from bigger battery capacity]

Apple *could* make iPhone 11 run AI, it's just that each query would take forever and it would suck the battery dry.

There's a lot more to adding new features than just "being able to".

The UX matters and in case you hadn't realized, Apple users in particular value that highly.

I think they should call the phone iPhone NSSE or maybe GE....isn't it the least capable of Apple's lineup?

If 8GB are the bare minimum for running AI, then you need at least these 8GB plus the amount of RAM you were already using without AI!

If the device only has 8GB of RAM, every time AI is required to run, every app running parallel in the background has to be swapped out of memory or its content invalidated. It is the same as running a PC/Mac low on memory. It is constantly swapping...

if iphone SE will have 8gb ram then its impossible for Apple to keep from even marketing purposes the iphone pro line with the same 8gb ram, so i fully expect next month the iphone pro line to feature 12gb ram
Marketing purposes? When did Apple ever use the amount of RAM in a phone for marketing purposes? It's not even in the spec sheet.

If they can sell a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air with the same 8GB base RAM, they sure as hell can sell a Pro phone with the same RAM as the base phone.

Having 8GB as a requirement for running AI is not the same as AI taking up 8GB of RAM. Clearly, Apple believes that the product needs 8GB to run AI together with whatever else it needs to run.

I do think we will see a spec bump of the base Macbooks soon, however I wouldn't put it past Apple to move to 12 GB and not 16.

So unless Apple discontinues the iPhone 15 models this year when the iPhone 16 series debuts, this will leave Apple's smartphone lineup in an unusual position, with a sub-$500 device in the iPhone SE 4 able to run Apple's latest AI features while the standard iPhone 15 models cannot.
If you think Apple will have to discontinue the iPhone 15 because it cannot run AI when a sub-$500 iPhone SE 4 can, then Apple would have to discontinue the iPhone 14 as well since it would be an over-$500 iPhone that also cannot run AI, unless you think Apple will drop the price of the iPhone 14 below that of the iPhone SE 4.

Right now, Apple has the iPhone 13 priced starting at $599. I don't see Apple reducing the starting price of the iPhone 14, currently at $699, to $449 or less when Apple historically dropped them by $100 increments.
