It's been said (rumored) numerous times that the iPhone SE 4 will be priced higher than the current SE's $429 starting price.

I still have my doubts that the SE 4 will be able to run AI. AI should be the differentiator and selling point of the flagship line up (iPhone 16 series) to get people to buy them. This would also let Apple keep the iPhone 14 and/or 15 in the line up for those who don't want/care about AI (I don't).

Reasons for people to buy an iPhone 14 or 15 over an SE 4 would be for things like an extra camera lens and stronger zoom, MagSafe, higher storage capacity (up to 512GB), higher resolution and brighter display, higher capacity battery, etc.
AI doesn't need to be limited to top phones just because Apple saved 40cents on RAM... (but yes, it's Apple, so they will find ways to gimp lower priced devices so that we are pushed towards more expensive products).

This. They have an army of what my dad calls “bean counters” (and that I call “business school classmates”). The cannibalization would be off the charts, and there’s no way it ends up being profit maximizing. Something just isn’t right with this rumor. On a less important note, it would decimate resale values on older devices. I doubt Apple makes a ton off of their older iPhone refurbs, but they do make some, and this would nuke that business too. Moreover, if you kill trade-in values, it becomes that much harder to step-sell someone to the “Pro” line, so there’s a knock-on sales and profit effect too. There’s no way this rumor is accurate exactly as written.

"Courage."

Because i don't want my apps to get get memory'd out or refresh in the background when i switch to check another app for example.

Long time apple user - more ram is better.

Why do you not want more ram?

Be specific.

I've never encountered that problem on my iPhone 15 PM (with 8GB of RAM). And that's using my phone extensively with multiple apps open.

You may want to consider a trip to the Genius Bar to figure out what's wrong?

iPhone 16 will also have 8GB.

Such a shame

No smaller version = no interest from me
I always liked smaller phones because they fit in the pocket better. I finally caved and bought a 15PM and I'm completely sold on it- mainly because of the battery life. It's still a bit annoying in the pocket and can damage shorts/trousers if you sit with it in there, though.

Rumours are saying 10%. I'm not sure that will cut it, but if it is, then yes it is probably still the cheapest model.

Agree to disagree then. I don't think Apple sees this as a differentiator only for the high end, and for sure the competition doesn't. I don't think Apple can afford to have this in the high end only, and let low-cost Android competitors spam the market with AI marketing.

Display and battery is rumoured to be based on iPhone 14, so no upsell there. Also, RAM or not, iPhone 14 has the A15 CPU which is already in the current SE (and the 13). I don't see them sticking with A15 for the SE4. In fact, it's reasonable that the whole A15 lineup (13, 14, SE) will go together. If not this fall, then in spring when the SE4 shows up.

Should I dig up all the old comments on Macrumors only a week ago about how SE absolutely wont have Apple Intelligence because it is a stupid strategy?

If the base M4 iPad Pro has 8GB memory then a base M4 MacBook Air and Pro can come with 8GB memory like they currently do.

The 256GB and 512GB ‌iPad Pro‌ models are equipped with 8GB RAM, while the 1TB and 2TB models have 16GB RAM. Both models offer 120GB/s memory bandwidth.

The M4 chips in the different storage tiers also vary, with the 256/512GB models offering a 9-core CPU and the 1TB/2TB models equipped with a 10-core CPU. Both models have 10-core GPUs and a 16-core Neural Engine.
iPadOS =/= MacOS. Macbook Air can be equipped with 24 GB of RAM, iPad Pro cannot. It's perfectly reasonable to have more RAM in an entry Macbook than an entry iPad Pro.

Only if you are going to make sure that it was said by the same persons now stating otherwise. I certainly didn't say that.

I regularly have my pro sized phone in my pants pocket. I’ve never once had it damage them

The moment Apple releases the 12 GB RAM M4/M5 Air is the moment I will seriously consider upgrading from my Lenovo.
I highly doubt it. If that's what was holding you back, why didn't you just get a 16GB version then? I'm sure you would find something new to complain about.

I'm curious, how much RAM do you have in your Lenovo?

I have tested, my private 8GB M1 Air is provably faster than my 16GB similarly priced Lenovo from work, for various MS Office tasks. For instance, I have a large Powerpoint file where the Lenovo is literally buffering when navigating through the presentation, while the Air is instant.

I still think iPhone X size 5.8" is the best size for iPhone SE. Just keep iPhone X form factor but refresh the internals

I used to powerlift as a hobby, and my thighs and ass are still relatively huge, which might have something to do with it....

Having said that, pants pockets have similar depths, meaning when you sit it would be as likely for your phone to poke into your hip and jam as for me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I wonder if it will really still have the iPhone 6 appearance... how long has that been now... 12 years?? That's a long time to keep one design...

Also, the iPad Pro comes with 12gb memory but apple made on 8gb available. So the memory hardware will likely be there in the base M4 Macbook, it is just a matter of Apple making this available to the Macbook

I think the iPhone 14 chassis design is worth targeting.

It is a much more repairable design, where back and front repairs can both be done for a reasonable cost. There was a period of phone designs that were very expensive to repair, and Apple probably doesn't want to go back there.

Macs need more RAM to run smoothly, but Apple are desperate to force as many people as possible to pay the ludicrous markups to purchase extra RAM

It might lack MagSafe, action button, have lower screen brightness, stuff like that.
No way it lacks magsafe, especially as they donated most of magsafe to qi2, it would be super embarrassing if a new phone from Apple didnt have those features while every sub-300 Android phone does - using Apple developed tech

I could see them having it charge at the standard qi2 wattage instead of a higher wattage like the higher end phones though

Well, that was to be expected and also shows how much RAM really costs for Apple. I'd expect that to increase with the regular iPhone 17 models again - those AI-Models are not getting smaller in the foreseeable future. Likewise, new Macs should at least get 12GB RAM in autumn. Atm, I'd wait as long as possible before buying new Apple hardware. They've aleay operated at the lowest RAM limit and charged an arm and a leg for RAM/SSD upgrades - even more for exactly the same chips but in more premium product lines. They'll probably run into the same limits earlier over the next years.

All great, but darn it I wish they kept the same screen size as one option.
The purported screen size increase is only 1/4" larger than it would be if you put an edge-to-edge screen on the current iphone SE. Since TouchID is no longer needed they lengthen the screen and it has a longer aspect ratio similar to the rest of the iphone lineup.

If these leaks are accurate the phone itself will barely be taller than the current SE.

They have to cut costs for the SE in some way, and existing SE owners have been fine without wireless charging (as are many non-SE iPhone users I know). Budget phone buyers are also less likely to spend extra money on a wireless charger.

Semi-related, I would’t be surprised if the rumored iPhone Slim/Air comes without MagSafe, since MagSafe costs extra thickness, including the glass back necessitated by wireless charging.
