You could probably strap an ipad pro to someones head in apple store and demand 2 k for it, telling them its the best. They would walk out the store with it on their head and a big grin on their face. While everyone else is laughing at them.. especially when they try putting it in their pocket.

Actually the iphone and ipad lines, might just merge into one. End up with iphones bigger than ipads? Where does it end

I think it will come to this, before we have mini phones again.

Everyone here is mini mini mini, but the mini didn't sell well.

The mini didn’t, because of name and price point. But the SE2 outsold even the flagship Samsung Galaxy the year it was released. Even more than the Pro iPhone 11’s, if I remember right it was second only to the flagship iPhone 11 at the time…it sold something like 22 million units that year alone…

When people like something they can have a hard to understand/accept many others might not share their viewpoint. Mini phones don’t sell enough, and Apple has tried, so they’ll offer something their research says has broader appeal.

This is along the same lines pertaining to why Apple has dropped the 27in. iMac—Apple doesn’t thinks it’s worthwhile anymore.

Funny, but I have an iPhone 14 base model I picked up in August. It is a bit smaller physically than my previous iPhone 8+ but the 14’s screen is about 5% larger in area. So it fits easier in my pocket and I even gained a bit in screen size.

At SE price, and without competing against the existing SEs as compact phones, it would likely sell quite well.
And that the problem, they want to sell more expensive phone. Of coarse a $429 iPhone mini would sell well, and it would cannibalize higher end sales.

People don't blame the Mac mini or iPad mini for its name. Those products certainly survived. Why does iPhone 12/13 mini get to use that excuse?

For price, Apple has always used $100 increments for larger and smaller devices. Again, why does iPhone mini get to use that excuse?

I would love a bit smaller phone, maybe not mini but XS size, perfect size IMO. But even if it is iPhone 14 size, I would get it as long as there is no camera bump like on all iPhones of late.

2025?
I suppose an SE4 with a 14 chassis, will look ‘old’ with it’s notch.

I think rumours have the iPhone 16 with a smaller dynamic island.
And the iPhone 17 will lose the dynamic island and have a dot.

For only an extra $100, the much larger screen and “premium” features made it almost a no brainer for most consumers. If it were $200, $250 cheaper than the ‘flagship’, then you have a real decision to weigh. IMO

Id much rather have a notch than a floating gap or hole. Its what puts me off current android phones. The holes annoy me way more than a notch.

Now that Apple has given up on the Mini size, this is my next phone, or the SE 5 or whatever. Whatever iPhone is cheapest.

iPhone 8? Surely they mean reusing the same design since the iPhone 6.

It had a good run, only apple could sell a phone using a 9 year old design

The 5.4-inch mini ($699) was $100 less than the 6.1-inch ($799). The same $100 gap exists for Pro ($999) and Pro Max ($1,099). Yet, the Pro sells very well.

Personally, I think the 5.4-inch was simply too small for today's consumer, even without considering the battery.

I wondered if maybe it would use the now-abandoned 13 mini chassis, just because it seemed like it would be cheaper than re-engineering the iPhone 14 design to only have a single camera 🤔
My hopes so too. But reality is all about business.
Even official stores had low stock of minis, and mini died down over long period of time: basically they have no leftover shells. It would take making new shells.
With this, probably they overdid 14 shells a lot and covid happened, so attaching a glass cover for 1 hole and detaching old module and clicking in new camera module ends up being cheaper.

So this is officially the end of normal sized phones, huh? I know I'm in the minority here, but I really wish I could get an Apple phone that is somewhat modern in a phone size that was considered normal only 5 or 6 years ago.

What do you mean? The mini had two cameras too.

Nope, it didn't sell well compared to their other iPhones. However up for debate is WHY it didn't sell well. Some jump to the conclusion that it is "people just don't want smaller iPhones" when I think it is more of "people didn't want that particular smaller iPhone with those features (not pro, reduced battery life) at that price (only $100 less)". And even that is an over simplification.

I suggest to re-release iPhone XR with LCD and USB-C next year as SE 4 to boost sells and get rid of 4.7" display phone before 2025 and then in 2025 SE 5 in iPhone 14 body with OLED. But anyway....

iPhone 17 Pro mini in 5.6" would be also great...

Sounds like a great feature mix of what most people want. The 48MP sensor allows for optical 2X. Everyone is comfortable with the 6.1-inch form factor by now.

This should be a good workhorse phone. The only concern would be processor. In the past, SE used A-series based on n-1. Now that regular iPhones use n-1, will the SE4 use n-2? If this launches Spring 2025, it might carry A16.
Yes, the 4.7" SE used n-1. I think for the SE 4, whatever chip is in volume production at the time to cut costs?

I don't even know the point of the SE. Might as well just keep selling the 14 or whatever it is based on for several years.

I'll never understand how people miss that the Mini had crappy specs. I wanted a one handed phone so bad, but I didn't buy the Mini until it was discontinued. I was waiting for one with a decent amount of RAM. Once I knew it wouldn't happen, then I got the 13 mini and will use it as long as I can.

I got my mom a mini back when the 12 mini came out and she loves it. She said she can use the phone much easier now since it isn't so big.

My son just recently asked me if I wanted to trade for his Pro since his hands are smaller than mine. I said no way I'm "downgrading" to a pro.
