I would love a bit smaller phone, maybe not mini but XS size, perfect size IMO. But even if it is iPhone 14 size, I would get it as long as there is no camera bump like on all iPhones of late.
I personally would love Apple to bring back the 5.8" in a 12-15 chassis. That could have been the SE 4, which is always the last of a previous form factor.

Assuming this turns out to be true and the SE 4 will be more or less the same size as the regular iPhone, my biggest question would be about pricing. It will almost certainly only have one camera. Will it be OLED like most iPhones are now, or will it use LCD like the other SE models?

If having only one camera and using a processor that's a couple years old are the only differentiating features, I feel like they could charge a lot more money compared to previous SE models. At the same time, though, if there's only a $100 price difference I would probably just go for the newer phone.

Long story short, if the SE 4 has one camera with the iPhone 14 design and OLED, and a processor that's a couple of years old, I think I would only be tempted if it were $599 or less. That seems reasonable: it's a step up from current SE price, but it's also $200 less than the current iPhone 15.

I still stand by the idea that the 12 and 13 mini did not "sell well" because they released the SE 2nd get right before the 12 mini came out. People like me who were waiting for a smaller phone or an update of the SE of some kind jumped on the 2nd gen SE, and then not even half a year later they released the 12 mini: the product people like me would have actually bought.

I hope the new SE gives us the mini iPhone size as the form factor. Honestly, the current SE (and 8, 7, and 6 lines) are too big for me. The mini is a great size though, and you get more screen real estate and more battery and a better camera!

I currently have an SE2 2020, which is great, apart from the battery.

I would be more than happy to upgrade to an SE4 but for the love of god apple, keep it slim and lightweight. I feel like those are the main reasons why people gravitate towards these cheaper iphones in the first place.

If they just release another brick with a screen I will not budge. I'll simply get batteries replaced for my existing SE over and over again until they do.

If true, Apple is getting rid of the only two reasons I got my SE—smaller size and Touch ID. I guess I no longer have any reason to not get a flagship iPhone next time. Hmm maybe this was deliberate haha. But then little did Apple know I would have paid flagship price for a smaller Touch ID SE, giving them more profit. 🫤
Im 100% with you on this one. I would actually pay more for a version of the SE that has touch ID and is a reasonable weight / size.

If they stick to their guns and never bring back touch ID, I'll consider going for an older iPhone 11 pro, since its actually now one of the smaller devices compared to the current lineup...and has great battery life.

Thats great for many, but what about the MINI fans out there???
Why does every article about the SE bring all the Mini fans out for a whinge?

Completely different target markets. The SE is aimed at the budget sector, whilst the mini is aimed at the small form factor sector, FFS.

If I was a Mini fan, I'd be complaining about the lack of a Mini Pro more than anything. That's the phone that would have given it real legitimacy.

I really do think that part of the reason it didn't sell well, was there was a perception of it being a cheap phone. Most Apple product sales are to people who are at least a little bit, if not a large part, very image conscious, and thus a lot of people didn't want to buy one because they didn't want to be seen as cheap. But if there was a Mini Pro, then that perception wouldn't exist.

I’m curious, why not an SE 2022 (3rd generation) instead? The SE has a newer chip, Touch ID, and is smaller than the 11 Pro. Or is the 11 Pro the size you want?

This could be my next phone if the 16 is even more expensive than the 15. I just don’t have the budget to keep up.

The battery is still no where near as good and thats ultimately the biggest downside with the SE for me personally. Couldn't care less about the cameras

Sounds like a great feature mix of what most people want. The 48MP sensor allows for optical 2X. Everyone is comfortable with the 6.1-inch form factor by now.

This should be a good workhorse phone. The only concern would be processor. In the past, SE used A-series based on n-1. Now that regular iPhones use n-1, will the SE4 use n-2? If this launches Spring 2025, it might carry A16.
In the past, all SEs used the A chip used by the latest base iPhone at the time of its release. The SE1 (2016) used the A9 same as the 6s, the SE2 (2020) used the A15 same as the 11, and the SE3 (2022) used the A15 same as the 14. Following this trend, if it was launched in 2025 it would have the A17.

current SE size is so great (I still have an 8). Just make it all screen with gesture navigation, touch id on the back (in the apple logo! or in the power button, hole punch front camera and no dynamic island

Id really really hope they have a decent iphone the size of the mini in their lineup in the coming years. I plan to upgrade from my iphone mini around 2025/26 and as it stands.. there is just no iphone that can replace mini.

I have a feeling ill be looking elsewhere. To be honest it might be a good thing… ive been really tempted to try other manufacturers for a while now. Just for a change.

I remember using HP smartphones years and years ago… i was so excited and playing with them. I miss that excitement in my phones now.

Except there are no other options, the Iphone 15 is about as compact as one can find these days, look at the specs at the so called small Android smartphones, the Zenphone which is the compact smartphone that Youtube tech shills laud, 5.77 by 2.68, the Iphone 15 is 5.81 x 2.82, when the current SE is killed off, so goes the mini smartphone.

Following our last in-depth report on the iPhone SE 4, MacRumors has received additional information which further confirms the claims made in our previous article.

iphone-se-4-modified-flag-edges.jpg

The iPhone SE 4, also known by the device identifier D59 and project codename Ghost, is a continuation of Apple’s budget-oriented line of iPhones, and is expected to replace the current third-generation iPhone SE.

With the arrival of the fourth-generation iPhone SE, Apple plans to finally retire the aging iPhone 8-style design used for the previous two generations of the iPhone SE. Instead, the iPhone SE 4 will feature a more modern look and increased display size, closely resembling the base model iPhone 14.

Newly obtained specifications indicate the iPhone SE 4 will use a modified version of the existing iPhone 14 chassis, with the same flat design. The dimensions of the iPhone SE 4 in its current stage perfectly match those of the base model iPhone 14. Recent findings also confirm that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will not include a Touch ID home button, instead featuring an all-screen design derived from the iPhone 14, with Face ID serving as the means of biometric identification.

To better illustrate the size difference between the iPhone SE 4 and the current iPhone SE third-generation, we have included the dimensions for the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3, respectively.

iPhone 14 dimensions and weight:

  • Length: 146.7 mm
  • Width: 71.5 mm
  • Thickness: 7.80 mm
  • Weight: 172 g

iPhone SE 3 dimensions and weight:

  • Length: 138.4 mm
  • Width: 67.3 mm
  • Thickness: 7.3 mm
  • Weight: 144 g

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be lighter than the iPhone 14 by about 6 grams, weighing 165 grams. The change in weight is likely a result of the single-camera design Apple has planned for the device. Unlike the iPhone 14, the iPhone SE 4 will feature a single 48-megapixel rear camera, developed under the codename "Portland", with a custom backplate for the device to account for the design change.

The decision to use a single-camera design lines up with all previous models of the iPhone SE, with the flash located in a similar position as well. It’s worth emphasizing that there is significant evidence that backs up the single-camera design, with Apple’s internal documentation highlighting it as a key change from the iPhone 14.

Apart from the single-camera design, no other significant factors could impact the weight of the iPhone SE 4. No changes in materials are expected, with the fourth-generation iPhone SE using the same 6013 T6 aluminum found in the iPhone 14, along with a glass backplate. Prototypes of the iPhone SE 4 have been seen in a black color closely resembling the Midnight color variant available for the iPhone 14, suggesting that black will be one of the color options Apple plans to offer with the fourth-generation iPhone SE.

Although the chassis dimensions of the iPhone SE 4 remain identical to that of the base model iPhone 14, the device will bring two significant features greatly differentiating it from previous iPhone models – a multi-purpose Action button and a USB-C port.

The Action button is a user-configurable button located above the volume buttons, first introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro, where it replaces the mute switch. Current information suggests that Apple intends to make the Action button a standard feature across the entire iPhone 16 range, with it eventually being available on the iPhone SE 4 as well. The current development status of the fourth-generation iPhone SE suggests a potential release date of 2025.

While Apple is experimenting with an all-new capacitive Capture button for the iPhone 16 range, there are no indications that this feature is being tested on the iPhone SE 4. The Capture button is expected to remain exclusive to the iPhone 16 lineup.

It is important to remember that the information presented here is pre-production information and may not reflect the hardware found on final mass production units, as changes are always possible during development.

Why not have an iPhone 11 pro rebadged as SE4?

And that the problem, they want to sell more expensive phone. Of coarse a $429 iPhone mini would sell well, and it would cannibalize higher end sales.

And if they marketed it with the same intensity that Samsung markets the Z Flip, sales would surely improve, if you prefer an SE sized phone, your only hope might be an Apple flip phone, one that would compel you to keep it in cover screen mode for the majority of your phone usage time.

Good to know. The new iPhone SE is still some time away from launch

I don't even know the point of the SE. Might as well just keep selling the 14 or whatever it is based on for several years.

Current lineup has at least 2 cameras, reduce it down to one would cut down the price. I believe the main consumer targets for SE are teenagers (first smartphone) and corporate (company device).
