According to Rene Ritchie, and some other Tech Youtubers, it has the iPhone 8 camera lens (which is perfectly fine by the way) with A13 ISP (imagine signal processor) and therefore, features
Hence portrait mode etc, and also why night mode may not be possible the way Apple has implemented it (with focus pixels, not available on the 8 or XR lens...which is the same as the X and XS main lenses respectively...)
What's wrong with the iPhone 8 camera? Its a fantastic smartphone camera, especially for it's size. It's all about software now a days. People forgot how awesome of a main shooter it was because the iPhone 8 was the fourth iteration of a design and in their mind the "same" as the iPhone 6, yet when the iPhone X came around it took these amazing incredible pictures....but they both have the same main camera...
Look at what Google has done with the Pixels...their sensors are solid but nothing special, yet it takes way, way better pictures than all the Androids with crazy sensors due to software
Some of the critics need to take a look at what the iPhone 6s lens could do, it can still take amazing photos and videos. The iPhone 8 lens is the same main camera in the 8 Plus and iPhone X, both of which were two of the best phones well into 2018 for taking pictures
1) the iPhone 8 lens is fine
2) you want a better lens, get an iPhone 11 but be prepared to spend more. Thats just the way it is.
3) appreciate what the ISP brings.
This is really where the improvements are. This is why the new SE will take amazing pictures.
There is only so much you can do at this price point, and Apple packed in as much value as they could. I think for 399USD vs 599USD for the XR, this is much more of a bargain and better value product today.
