You mean like the difference between the iPhone 14 and 15? I don't think most people find it that confusing. I just want my mom to be able to use a charging cable, and not have to worry if it's a phone charging cable or a tablet charging cable or a laptop charging cable or an emergency solar/battery lamp charging cable.
That’s the benefit of usb-c, and it may not be confusing to as many as I thought, but it sure confused people around me.

It is a small display when you have a newer iPhone to compare it to, but as someone with huge hands, it isn’t horrible. I actually enjoy using the SE from time to time. The small screen still looks great. If you get one, try Tracfone if in the US. They have them for $189, and they are easily unlocked.
That is a great price. I am in the US. So I can buy a phone from them without using them as my service and activate it on Verizon?

Not convinced this is staying under $500 with all the features listed.

I see this as replacing the iPhone 14 in the lineup at $599, perhaps with the iPhone 14 being dropped to $499.

If this launched at $499, who in their right mind would buy an iPhone 14 for an extra $100?
I expect Apple will drop the iPhone 14 after the new SE comes out. That would mean the two lowest-price iPhones would be the SE and the base 15. Even in that case, rumors seem to make the SE a more-capable phone than the 15. It might be an odd situation but it would be rectified a few months later when the iPhone 17 series is unveiled. I would then expect the two lowest-price iPhones to be the SE and the base 16, with the 15 going away.

I think it will be 549$ and goodbye iPhone 14 👋
Not in the US. It might have been $549 but once the tariffs go into place this new phone might end up being $699. Keep in mind all the rest of the phones in the lineup will have to go up in price as well so $699 will look really inexpensive compared to a $999 base model non pro 16 or a $1499 base model 16 Pro Max.

As an iPhone 14 minus one camera plus USB-C and the older A17 Pro chipset I'd expect it to be $500

if we get a new SE and it's akin to the mini, i might trade in my 15 pro for it. It'd be extremely cheap and i'm super tempted just by the form factor alone. I don't need ray tracing. Only thing i'd miss is the pro motion display. But almost every other system i use outputs at 60 hz or less.

To be honest… who on earth buys an iPhone SE for the price it is selling right now. There are so many other options available for a fraction of the price. A more modern overhaul of the SE should’ve happened years ago. Let’s also be honest… for $ 499 you can get a very well specked modern mobile phone these days.
Someone like me who wants to use an Apple Watch (iPhone required) and uses the iPad more than the phone for iMessage, which means the iPhone is rarely used, but required.

Edit: I didn't realize it was about finding a lower price for the current SE.

It's for someone that wants (or needs) to be in the iPhone/Apple ecosystem. As you say, plenty of better Android phones for that kind of money.

Here's an out-there thought: let's say Apple release the new SE at $599 and discontinue the iPhone 14. If sales hold up, they leave it at that. If sales fall, they could introduce the SE mini using later in the year or 2026 at $499. The battery and screen size would still be better than the outgoing SE3.

I don't care what anyone says, that is one of my favorite phones that I've ever owned. I got it in a pinch because my previous one broke unexpectedly. I ended up loving that thing.

And I was one of the very people dumping on it at release saying, "Look at what apple is charging and that price compared to competitors at the same price."

Actually using it, it felt "just right." It was a little pocket rocket. And the size. Oh the size. BRING BACK SMALL PHONES. :)

SE3 is the last Apple LCD phone PWM-sensitive people can enjoy.
I just got one (used, like new) to replace my 11, well it's lighter, a bit faster, everything else is quite obsolete, especially the design. But no strain to my eyes, without switching to low-end Android, that was the point.

Since when is a product's age calculated in days? This is like saying someone weighs 2400 oz instead of 150 lb, to make it sound heavier.

I will rue the day I will need to upgrade my 80+ year old mom from the iPhone SE3 I got her… due to the removal of the home button, will be inundated with the tech support phone calls from her.

My father in law of the same age, by comparison, has no issues with his iPhone 15.

My prediction for the price is $529 USD. Given the current SE is $429. A $100 increase is likely.

No one does. Verizon will give you a credit(with a new line on the phone) that makes it free. Others, like Tracfone, have the price at $189. Only way to get it full price is Apple themselves.

I go to my Authorized Apple Reseller frequently here in Helsinki and the manager has told me that he fears the negative reaction from his customers should the SE4 change as rumored.

While each service is a bit different in terms of unlocking times, all of the Tracfone brands (Tracfone, Total, Straight Talk, etc.) are pretty easygoing if you activate on a Verizon-based SIM. For that you'll need to keep service active for at least a month and there are numerous reports that you can let it lapse and then on the 60th day, it will automatically unlock (you'd probably need Wi-Fi access for it to get the updated policy from Apple).

Other than the cost of one month of service and the time, it's a great way to get a spare iPhone inexpensively.

I did this with a Total back in 2023 for a second-gen SE, it's now unlocked and can work on any carrier. Sometimes you can get them for $99 or $149 (what I'm seeing right now), if you're willing to go to a Walmart location and buy them. They'll typically just stick a little envelope with a SIM card on the back and you can activate it yourself at home.

Well said. That’s what I was trying to tell him.
