A budget sized "Plus" model with more modernistic design? Could do very well, especially with smaller bezels thanks to TouchID possibly being relocated to the power button.

I am not a fan of the fingerprint sensor/power button combo. I prefer the rear of the device, but anything that helps the design move forward can benefit others. They can enjoy a gesture based experience without possibly losing TouchID.

Exactly. IMO, the whole point of the SE was to give customers a smaller form factor with the latest tech. It's not the price, it's the size that matters. But maybe Apple thinks bigger sells better (especially when cheap).

"IMO". That is the whole problem. It wasn't the point. It was to use a lot of leftover 5S "shells" and introduce a budget iPhone. It just happened to be a smaller form factor.

Is the smaller phone what a lot of us want? Yes. Was that the point of the OG SE? No.

What is the point of an SE Plus? Just because the iPhone 8 had a Plus version?

Presumably price. People always think of the size of the SE. I think Apple never thought of it that way it was the price to get people buying. Most people want bigger screens however if you didn't have the money the SE was the lowest price and for most the size was a compromise.

It seems like a lot lately is getting pushed into next year. I wonder if it's Coronavirus or something else? Apple seems to be tripping over its toes a lot lately on things with quality and software issues. I wonder if there's a bit of a redirection of assets going on right now to get beyond that. I'm hoping that's what it is.

I think they know demand will be low this year since there is going to be a global recession.

This was a silly rumor yesterday, it’s a silly rumor today and it will be a silly rumor tomorrow.

The SE Plus fills a price slot that’s already occupied in the lineup, currently the iPhone XR starting at $599. In the fall it will be the iPhone 11 starting at $599.

As far as I’m concerned, the SE is all about the price. Whatever they release, I’ll always go for the cheapest iPhone because it’s not my primary device. It’s just a phone with extras. At the moment I have a perfectly working SE 1st gen but would welcome a slightly bigger screen. It’s also a good idea to have the latest tech. Hopefully, the new SE will last for good 3-4 years.

Second half of 2021? At that point it would make more financial sense to just make the current iPhone 11 the "SE Plus" I have a tough time believing that Apple would invest money in designing a new Touch ID part for a SE model.

If they were going to make an SE Plus, it would have came out last week, in the shell of the former 8 Plus. There's no delay and this device won't see the light of day.

There's no way, from a financial standpoint, that Apple would give the SE Plus a different design than the already available 8 Plus design, especially with a rumored 5.4" iPhone 12 in the works. Plus, by 2h21, that is too long of a span of time for this "Budget" range phone lineup to be strung out. People will lose interest.

If they were to release another iPhone 5 sized iPhone — the Internet would explode with all the complaints about dismal battery life. The number one incentive for making bigger phones is a bigger battery = longer run time.
This isn't true. Bigger phone = bigger screen = needs more battery to light up that display.
The original SE had better battery life than the bigger 6s.

I'm going to hold off on this myself. I'm really wanting the 6.1 inch screen, minus the notch. Well, unless next years iPhone will move to a notchless design. I have an 8 plus, and i'll hang onto it for another year.
BOOOOOOO!!!!

I was really looking forward to getting an SE Plus to replace my aging 6S Plus. I like the large screen and TouchID.

Oh well... maybe I'll get accustomed to the iPhone 12 Pro Plus Max Ultra or whatever.
Blah, just caught the notch part included on the SE Plus.

Touch ID on the power button is what I’m dreaming on an iPhone since the beginning.
I’m using it on a Samsung S10e and I’m sure Apple is capable of an even better solution.

I've been struggling with this myself.

The only thing I can come up with is that Apple knows there are still a significant number of people who want TouchID at a low to moderate price, so go the SE route by putting modern internals into an older design, but in a larger phone to capture the 6-8 Plus group upgraders.

This would probably take the place of the XR in the lineup, and leave the iPhone 11 as the cheapest, modern design when the newer phones come out.

The idea of a "hybrid" model between the old and new designs just doesn't make any sense, especially at the price points they want to hit.

I didn't see the "Plus" at first glance in the headline. I think you scared half of your readers that pre-ordered :)\
Don't plan on buying one, but I was shocked for a second.

These iPhone 8...ahem... SE's all exist so Apple can get rid of older inventory, I think.

But it does give the iOS lineup a bit of symmetry, doesn't it?

TouchID, bezelled devices for the low end (iPhone SE, iPad Air, iPad, iPad Mini), and FaceID, bezel-less devices for the high end (iPhone Pro, iPad Pro).

I think perhaps Apple is going to move to the "good, better, best" lineup of old, with the rumored new 11-inch iPad.

Thus, the lineup could become (by dropping the Air name):

Good: iPad SE (current base iPad or iPad Air and Mini), iPhone SE
Better: iPad (rumored 11-inch FaceID), iPhone (current iPhone 11 models)
Best: iPad Pro (current 11 & 12.9), iPhone Pro (current models)

Could be. I Wonder how large that market would be though.
