Does anyone really care about this old kinda phone lol

A lot of people. It's almost certainly the next phone for both my mother and my mother-in-law, both are each still using a 6, and it or its successor honestly may be my next phone too. I have an 8 now and while I like the bigger screens of the newer models I still like touchid more than faceid. My 8 is still solid for now, so it isn't getting replaced yet, but when it does get replaced a phone like this may be more appealing to me

I’d like to think they are using the extra time to add a headphone jack but that’s probably just wishful thinking. Oh well, I see android phones in my future. ☹️ It would take sooooo little to retain soooo many customers. Apple is self destructively arrogant.

If they were to release another iPhone 5 sized iPhone — the Internet would explode with all the complaints about dismal battery life. The number one incentive for making bigger phones is a bigger battery = longer run time.
But they don’t make bigger phones. They make the screen bigger but the thickness gets reduced leaving if anything less room for battery.

Because everybody wants a phone so thin it bends when you pocket it, right? The kind of phone that gets dropped all the time because there isn’t enough of it to hold onto, right?

Like many others have already said, this makes no sense. An SE Plus is a 5.5” 8 Plus with large top/bottom bezels, updated with an A13, wireless charging, WiFi 6, 4GB etc.

It’s a $499 phone, unless the 4.7” SE (2nd gen) drops to $349, in which case it’ll be $449. Released sometime around next March.

The only thing I can come up with is that Apple knows there are still a significant number of people who want TouchID at a low to moderate price, so go the SE route by putting modern internals into an older design, but in a larger phone to capture the 6-8 Plus group upgraders.

This would probably take the place of the XR in the lineup, and leave the iPhone 11 as the cheapest, modern design when the newer phones come out.

The idea of a "hybrid" model between the old and new designs just doesn't make any sense, especially at the price points they want to hit.
The thing is I doubt it's users wanting TouchID per se but rather wanting the Home button because they don't want to have to learn the new gestures inherent with no Home button. Also, could be just folks who are adamantly against the notch or want the 16:9 aspect ratio.

A complete redesign for the SE seems to me the worst of both worlds.

Exactly. IMO, the whole point of the SE was to give customers a smaller form factor with the latest tech. It's not the price, it's the size that matters. But maybe Apple thinks bigger sells better (especially when cheap).

It is the emphasis on the "smart" rather than the "phone" part of smartphones.

These devices stopped being phones you could hold in one hand and became the latest iteration of the personal computer several years ago.

It better have an LCD screen at 401 ppi...
Agreed, but it won't. I had the same thought passing on the XR and waiting for the 11. The display on the Plus series wont be repeated due to downsampling it has to do. I think the best evidence for this is Apples decision to make the XR and 11 828p, 326ppi.

To not have a large LCD iphone with 401ppi in the line up today, and with the SE Plus (8 Plus design) now a no show in 2020 is gutting. The XR and 11 don't appeal due to the under 1080p and narrower display. Now they're planning a weird budget 11 hybrid design in 2021 instead - waaaaa? So it's going to go head to head with a priced dropped 11 and the new 12. Ok?

Wasn't the SE Plus (8 Plus design) at the factory but had some delay? Now it's been cancelled for 2020? Thanks Jon P.

This might be almost the perfect phone for me. I have an XR, and I hate the narrower screen and notch (both because I browse the web in landscape mode). I prefer touch ID to faceID. Not having a home button isn't horrible, but the new gestures to get around that are pretty clunky and it just works better with a home button. The SE that just came out is too small for me, but an 8+ sized phone with modern parts would be great.

If only it would have a headphone jack :).

I 100% agree!

I was hoping to see the SE Plus this year, but being that they’re going to delay it by a year and a half, they’ll hopefully put an A14 (or even an A15, since it’s co-released with 2021 flagships) instead of the A13.

The one thing that would hold me back from getting the SE Plus if it was released now is that it would have the Intel-only A13 chip.

My iPhone 8 Plus was bought carrier-unlocked, directly from Apple, guaranteeing I have the Qualcomm chip. (For the A11 chip, if it works with Verizon’s CDMA network, it had to be Qualcomm, even though I’m using it on AT&T. The GSM only chip was Intel).

It would be great to have the same phone with upgraded internals.

I wish rumor mongers would do this for other product lines:

"2012 iMac New Body Design Postponed Forever"

What is the point of an SE Plus? Just because the iPhone 8 had a Plus version?
You have to understand that the SE isn't about careful market considerations and meeting niche demands. This is only about reusing parts and production lines for the old model to squeeze the most out of R&D costs. Just lower the price and enough people will eat it up. Offering the SE is basically free for Apple.

Makes sense as an SE Plus would be stomping all over the multicolored toes of the iPhone 11.

This is Wong. What do you mean 2H 21? Jon Prosser said it was delayed from March to next year just days ago!. This cant be right!

/s

Seriously thousands if not millions buy into his iPhone SE plus was coming, then not coming, then delaying to 1H21, when is he going to suggest the same that it is going to delay into 2H21 just like Ming said?

The argument for delaying it could be due to the current economic climate. iPhone 5G was suppose to be the super cycle, when people upgrade they want to buy 5G ( regardless of whatever that mean to each and everyone ) so they are better "equipped" for the future.

The problem is we are very likely heading into the largest recession ever seen since 1950s. So the dynamic changes.

I would imagine in 2021, they will introduce "6" new iPhone.

iPhone Pro
iPhone 13
iPhone SE

With 2 Size for each category. Where the Pro and 13 are refinement from 2020. SE will introduce a slightly new design that has Touch ID in power button and forgo the Home Button. Making the top and bottom chin slightly smaller.

Their 2021 iPhone Slogan - A new iPhone for everyone.

Bring Steve Back,
Remove all the clutter
Make 3 phones, same general specs, small, medium and large.
:)
I feel that with almost 1 billion active iPhone users, the needs of Apple's user base is more diverse than it has ever been, and so we see Apple doing their best to cater to as many users as possible while still keeping their offerings slim.

I wonder just how many people are on the newer iPhones and how many are holding on to their home buttons because they find the concept of Face ID alienating. If there are enough people still on their plus devices, I won't be surprised if Apple does eventually roll out an updated 8+ just to keep them happy.

I dunno...this rumor seems off to me. The appeal of the SE to Apple is that they can recycle existing parts to offer a “new” phone at a low price with only minimal R&D required. The 2020 SE is basically the iPhone 8 chassis with an update processor and camera module and 3D Touch removed. There is very little new in there and certainly no parts that Apple wasn’t already manufacturing for other devices.

This is describing an entirely new phone design. If this phone ever materializes, I doubt it will be as affordable as either iteration of the SE so far.

Yes, this rumor cannot be right. 18 months later this would be dated phone. Something else is going on to delay this much... basically canceling this model.

You'd think when they dropped the headphone jack they replace it with something else. Why not have two lightning ports or a usb-c and a lightning port for headphones. Oh wait, they want you to use wireless buds all the time. Well then why not then get rid of all ports and require wireless charging and require wireless buds.
