Has anybody else noticed this change? Do all iPhones come with this type of tool now, or is it only the SE?

My SE came with the one pictured in post #10... I got the phone in April 2016. It works fine.

I use my earrings

LOL even though I have SIM tools lying around, I have done that too. I rarely need to swap a SIM except when I've upgraded the iOS on the 5C I took the SIM from for use with the SE. Have to swap it back just temporarily after upgrading the iOS on the 5C that I still use WiFi-only, since otherwise it balks at the "activation" it insists on trying to step through (file under PITA).

No, Apple just put it in there for ***** and giggles

Your condescending attitude on these threads is catching up to you and isn't working. Try exercising some humility and respect towards others.

Back on topic: OP, I actually compared my Sim tool to Apple's latest one included and it is different. Seems much lower quality than years past.

Mine does not have an opening like in post #1, it is all one piece like in #10. It doesn't bend or anything when I use it or even press it on a table etc. Very sturdy.

Mine does not have the opening and it's fairly weak. I actually purchased a third party Sim tool, it's strong and works well. It's defintely nice to have with these new Sim trays housing the water resistant O-Ring seal, which is harder to remove on the iPhone 7 from other iPhones.

Would say installation is harder
You have to rub your finger along the side until it's flush

The installation is levied by the seal. Hence, which makes it more stubborn than previous Sim trays to remove, which lack the water seal. Otherwise, the installation would suffice as any other iPhone model.

It's the friction between the seal and tray, the installation isn't the issue. The seal is.

Yeah I understand that, just saying it's hard to put in all the way, have to make sure it's 100% in there or you could have a dead phone

Always take a soft blanket and rub up and down the side fast until it's smooth
But I don't change my SIM much anyway, and most of the time it's in my 6s, not 7

I think your being slightly pedantic. Your iPhone wouldn't be "Dead." Your iPhone recognizes when the Sim is installed and displays when active.

I have never heard of a "Soft blanket." Simply using your finger or touch should be more than enough of an indicator to ensure the Sim tray is seated properly.

Also, on some iPhone 7 models, it's not uncommon for the sim tray to protrude slightly, due to the O-Ring seal. If it's not exactly flush, it's not an issue, being I have observed multiple iPhone 7's like this.

Dead from water damage
If the tray isn't fully inserted and sealed, water could pass through

And wym, it's a blanket that's soft? And I have a Jet Black, so I try to keep fingerprints off (an impossible task)

Apply pressure and ensure its seated.

I think you're thinking I sit here for 5 minutes and rub the SIM try
It's a 2 second process

This discussion is exhausted and I made my points, you seem very confused by something I clearly indicated. I have no idea how else to explain it you. Moving on.

I noticed after inserting the SIM card into my 7 the tray wasn't quite flush on the one side. I ejected the sim tray and pushed it back in with my finger putting more pressure on the side that wasn't flush the first time and it went in flush.

My 7 Plus slightly protrudes, which is seated properly. My 4.7 iPhone 7 Is flush. It appears it varies, but it seems to be an occurrence. Apple inspected my devices and determined not Every iPhone is consistent with how the tray seats, Although are both normal.

I read somewhere using something else like a paper clip instead of the proper eject tool can be harmful?

Paper clips have worked fine on iPhones for me. I have damaged android phones though. The hole was smaller than the paper clip and the paper clip kind of messed up the hole a bit.

Sucks when 50% of the paper clips you own are too big for iPhone

A toothpick also works, but it's a 1 time use

SIM eject tools are like socks, you can have 10 today and 2 tomorrow, so just buy a box of paper clips at Walmart for $3

I just looked in my 6S+ box and here is what mine came with. Same one they've always come with.
