Shipments of Apple's iPhone are expected to surge to 71.5 million units in Q4 2014 before the company decreases shipments to an estimated 49.4 million units in Q1 2015, according to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst estimates that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will account for nearly 57 million of the fourth-quarter number and that the iPhone 5c and iPhone 4S will experience quarter-over-quarter growth in Q1 2015 before Apple ceases production of both phones later in the year.

Kuo notes that he expects shipments of the iPhone 6 to outnumber shipments of the iPhone 6 Plus by a 2:1 ratio:
We attribute the shortage of iPhone 6 Plus partly to less smooth production than iPhone 6. Moreover, while iPhone 6 Plus attracted greater attention when it was launched, we think more consumers will prefer iPhone 6 as they can operate the handset with one hand. Eventually, iPhone 6 shipments will outperform those of the iPhone 6 Plus model.
Sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus topped ten million during the launch weekend for both devices, with the larger model seeing supply constraints. However, shipping times for the iPhone 6 Plus improved last week, with the 16GB model showing a shipping estimate of 7 to 10 days and the 64GB model showing an estimate of 2 to 3 weeks. A survey of U.S. customers done by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) earlier this month also noted that U.S. customers are favoring the iPhone 6 over the iPhone 6 Plus by a 3:1 ratio.

Update: This article initially stated the 71.5 million estimate was for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales when it is actually for all iPhone models.

iPhone 6 Plus was made for Android users that deep inside wanted a big iPhone and iPhone users that moved to Android because they were looking a bigger phone. iPhone 6 size is perfect.

Steve Jobs would have never allowed these iPhone screen sizes.

This complaint is about a year late. And yes he would have. Steve Jobs said whatever he thought people wanted to hear, regardless of whether what he said was true or not. He had absolutely no problem contradicting himself later, be it five years or five weeks.

After initially being skeptical of the iPhone 6 Plus, there's no way I will go back to a smaller phone.

A lot of phones, and for good reason - these are the best iPhones / Phones ever made.

Why do I get the feeling analysts are going to throw out these ridiculous numbers that Apple will never meet and then when they announce quarterly earnings in January the stock will drop like a rock when Apple doesn't sell a ridiculous number of phones.

You're absolutely right. One of my favourite things about him.

Is that the iPhone 6 Plus that Ming Chi Kuo said was going to be delayed until 2015 due to 'production issues'. Either Apple have perfected time travel technology and are importing phones from the future or Kuo is a terrible analyst.

i read that 80 percent of the buyers of the iphone 6 and 6+ were previous iphone owners. so yes 20% are coming over from android, but clearly they weren't the only one that wanted bigger phones.

I bought the 6 (coming from the 5s) and although the phone is just a bit bigger than i would like, I am very happy with it. I have found that I can no longer efffectively type with one hand while riding public trnsportation. At least not while holding in with my death grip to ensure no one can rip and run.

Probably because the market often hinges upon utter nonsense. Not that the whole thing isn't ridiculous, but at least we can make money off of it.

I don't really think that will happen though, although that's just a gut instinct. I'm certainly no expert... which, now that I think about it, probably makes my prediction more likely to be true than if it were an expert making a prediction =P

iPhone 4S is still in production? This is surprising.

"Out of warranty repairs". If you bring a really old broken iPhone 4s to an Apple Store, Apple will "repair" it by giving you a brand new identical iPhone 4s for £160 in the UK. That's not a "subsidised" price where you have to enter a contract; the phone is yours for that money. An excellent deal. They still do the same for an iPhone 3GS (replacement costs £110); I didn't check older phones. Again an excellent deal if you compare to the cost of an iPod Touch.

It seems they have run out of refurbished phones for that deal, my wife got an iPhone 4s that was manufactured October 2014.

Lol :) Why's that?

My favorite claim was that "The G3 will continue to be supported for the next ten years!" in like, 2000. Less than five years later, the end of the PowerPC was announced, and less than ten years later, even the G5 wasn't supported, and the G4 was required for Leopard lol.
