Apple needs sharper pricing in their mid-range devices. There are always those who will pay the premium for a Pro iPhone, but the standard models are now priced too high and too close to the Pro.
This drop has nothing to do with price. For two month there have been article after article on how supply far outstripped demand because of the shutdowns and protests in China. The were several that noted the sales were being pushed into this year. Now you have this. Odd.

If indeed the iPhone has plateaued, looks like the next potentially big platform - Reality Pro (?) - couldn't be coming at a better time.

Not if they price their first “reality goggles” at around 3K, as rumoured. They need to get as many people in as possible to get the developers interested, etc. Cook needs to crunch the numbers and see that selling 1 million devices for $500 is still better than, say, selling 500,000 for $800. The mores iOS users worldwide - the better. More service subscribers, more Apple Maps users, etc. It is a win-win for all. Apple should stop holding to as high margins as possible, else they just risk losing their client base to Android.

Every single article on this subject during the November and December holiday season was bemoaning the fact that demand was far outpacing the supply of available phones. At no time during the holiday was there reporting of excess supply and weakened demand for iphones. I dont doubt the numbers that shipments may have been down, but I think this analyst has it wrong as to the reasons.

Does this sound like what happened with iPhones in October/November/December??? "Heavy sales and promotions during the quarter helped deplete existing inventory rather than drive shipment growth."

When you don’t change that much, what do you expect? People are keeping phones longer and, truth be told, the 14s just weren’t all that exciting. I barley care about the dynamic island already.

Time to artificially bloat the phone with software updates or make it harder to repair and to brainwash people that having disposable phones is a-ok!

I also believe the purple color was not what Apple hoped it would be. Can't remember anyone asking for that.

There has got to be more than a $200 difference between the pro and the non pro if they want more uptake on the non pro.

I was the one who said "Apple stock needs crash detection" after last falls event.

if you didn't buy the pro model you kinda got the same phone as last year. consumers are staying away from higher priced items; even at the grocery store - most people are trading down to store brand. Apple had an opportunity to have a new phone at a price that people were willing to pay and they missed it.

This is certainly related to people feeling poorer in this economic/stock-market environment.

However, I find my need to upgrade Apple products diminishing every year due to the "good enough" effect.

Apple needs new product categories.
Their new product categories are 'Services' where pricing is already getting out of hand. Apple One just took a big jump in cost this month. Standalone Apple TV monthly cost going up also...

People won't take this crap forever. They've already stopped buying iPhone annually in their millions and they won't suck up ever-increasing monthly service subscription charges either.

Mac sales have slumped because pricing is getting out of hand, especially in EU/UK.

iPad sales have slumped because the iPad Pro is a complete train wreck of a product that doesn't do a quarter of what the hardware is capable of. The standard iPad took a huge increase in price with the refresh, not sure what Apple was thinking with that one... People aren't stupid. They will gladly spend when something represents significant value for money, but not annually and not when there's global cost of living crisis.

Apple will still very do well but if they are shaking their heads wondering why people aren't spending then they may need to look outside the Cupertino bubble they are living in to understand why. And LOWER PRICING.

Not surprising news given the way supply chain issues and the economy are. People who think it has to do with the iPhone 14 not being different than the iPhone 13 imo are barking up the wrong tree.

As the poster above suggested, apple will NOT lower their price. As in prior times when the economy rebounds so will phone shipments.

Show me orders in the DEC quarter. If those were down compared to shipped orders last year, I'll be a little worried. I think there is a difference between in ability to fill orders due to the issues in China and real demand.

It’s a mature market. People are keeping their phones longer. Even a 6s still does a good job. There really isn’t anything life changing, well maybe the new emergency services. But I’ve survived so far without them. I see this trend continuing for a while. Apple will need to introduce that upgrade/leasing program and the AR goggles.
