Hmm, quite a juicy mystery. I would love an early 3G phone release, but I really think it's coming out at WWDC like previous posters. And I also thought that the FCC would need to be informed, too.

So... unexpected demand? It could be... RIM's smartphones are selling like hotcakes, they just beat analysts' forecasts. And the iPhone is credited for igniting the smartphone market. So if RIM is doing great, that would mean the iPhone is doing awesome, too.

I guess that's the more likely explanation for me, I am really looking forward to that 3G iPhone, but I still expect a June release.

iPhone shortage over

Yesterday, Apple Store of Santa Rosa Plaza, California, recieved 3 new cases of iPhones. So... i guess that rules out any possibility of decreasing stock in order to make room for a new model...

damn

Unlike you I do not believe that the 3G radio has to increase the price of the iPhone. New 3G iphones would sell at the normal price and the current (previous) model would be sold at a discount.

Point taken. However, that is a slap in the face to current iPhone users. Letting later customers pay the same price and then surprising them with 3G. Now you have a riot of iPhone users who paid the same price and are now surprised that they don't have the use of 3G, that would be an upsetting thing, I think.

They know what they're letting themselves in for. I would love an iPhone; I have the money for an iPhone, my previous contract has finished, my old phone is knackered...

But I'm not buying one because:
- EDGE sucks
- iPhone 1.0, too many issues, not enough features
- iPhone 2.0 is around the corner with 3G, new software, better features
- I don't want to be locked into a long contract with an obsolete phone.

As soon as iPhone 2 is released, I'll be there waiting in line.

I reckon on July.

And the iPhone is credited for igniting the smartphone market.

Only by complete idiots or people who ignore RIM's year on year growth and change in strategy to attract more private individual subscribers.

Any analyst or journalist who claims their success is down to the iPhone should be fired for being a clueless moron.

So if RIM is doing great, that would mean the iPhone is doing awesome, too.

Not really. It's possible but it's not a direct corelation.

I'm looking to see what iPhone v2 gives that iPhone v1 doesn't.

How about smaller, lighter, better signal, internet & video specs

No prizes for predicting a new model (or even 3G model) iPhone. It's bound to happen -eventually-

How about prizes for Apple if they fix the biggest problems with the current model...

too thick, too heavy, poor signal strength, poor internet performance...
and most important of all...
make the iPod video PROGRESSIVE, like the Classic & Nano. Interleaved, on the flagship product is just not acceptable!!

Oh, and for good measure,
How about bluetooth for (my preference) keyboard & mouse, when you've got them... as well as headsets & other bluetooth yumminess !

P.S. cut, copy, paste ?

I will probably still wait a little while on buying an iPhone. I have about 18 months or so left on my latest Verizon contract. By then, I suspect a 3rd generation iPhone will be out by then. Until then, I will just enjoy my iPod touch (which I will probably give to my girl friend. I offered to get her an iPhone when I get mine but she is too afraid of loosing it and being with her phone AND her PMP.)

I would like to see the next generation iPhone have some slight athestic changes. I don't expect anything big but just little tweaks, like with all Apple products. And of course, more capabilities.

I'm in the unfortunate position that I needed one now, and had to order one knowing I'll be tossing in when the new one comes out. I ordered it Friday, it shipped from China that day, and I got it yesterday. I don't know Apples normal stocking practices, but since it shipped from China, I suspect another run of the current model just completed.

Possibly two models by June?

Could it be possible that Apple's priming two phones by June: a 2.5G upgrade and a 3G?

W/ a 2.5G model arriving imminently, it may be able to answer the fact that:
  1. there's no noise from the FCC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they wouldn't need to be if they're using virtually the same chips inside, esp. the analog frontend. They would just pack a bunch more functionality in there.
  2. All the points made by analysts, leaks, etc. are all pointing to 3G version, but no news on whether the current iPhone may be revised?
  3. It doesn't make sense to stop production suddenly, and with the newest seedings of various Apple s/w, something has to give, right?
3G standards are so varied, that it may make sense to release a version in the States, EU, but for Asia and other parts, 2.5G may be a good first foray into those regions.

Thoughts?

Almost same boat but I hope June, but I'm in line with you ... although on the other side of the lake.

Yesterday an employee at the 5th Ave store in NYC told me they are still gettin shipments of the iPhone, but that they sell out quickly

Stopped at an AT&T store yesterday to get my Nokia looked at for some problems and said I'm waiting for the new iPhone to come out. The guy said "in 45 days." Not sure how much stock I put in that but I'm hoping something soon.

All AT&T Smartphones to Be 3G-Enabled Within Months

Apr 2, 2008, 4:25 PM by Eric M. Zeman

AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega confirmed that all of AT&T's smartphones, including BlackBerries and the Apple iPhone, will be running on AT&T's 3G network within months.

from AT&T

It kinda sounds like the "Fat Lady" just sang. :)

Well Vega just sang ... again. He's said this before. And it will happen. June 9th? June 29th? Official announcement vs. availability? This is what we don't know ... yet.
