It's crazy to me that the new XS Max is almost $1500, compared to $600 for the original iPhone 2g, which was more revolutionary at it's launch. Think of how many PPCs you could buy with that!

I know which I'd rather have.:D

This might be a bit of fun for someone wanting to build older opensource iPhone projects to run in the simulator natively on the ppc architecture... Are there any doorways of software possibilities here?

Some, though getting ahold of old source code like GLPaint is a bit tricky. Much of that hasn't even been carried over to the Apple Legacy Developer Documentation site, and what's there is only the most recent version of each sample code project. Nothing quite like the historical archive of Mac OS X code you'll see on a vintage OS X DVD with an Xcode install.

Looks like there's a small archive of iPhone OS 3.0 sample code over here, on Github; https://github.com/acekiller/iOS-Samples ...there was quite a bit of difference between 2.0 and 3.0 though, so don't expect any of these to just work with an old SDK.

EDIT: Not iPhone, but since old Apple sample code came up. I just rediscovered ASCIIMoviePlayer based on QuickTime. The source code is hilarious to read; https://developer.apple.com/library...on/Intro.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS10000842

Out of curiosity, I dusted off my iPhone 3G running the final OS it could handle (4.2.1 iirc) and to my surprise it still performs really well.

I sold my 3G soon after loading iOS 4.0.1 and it was definitely sluggish with several-second delays when launching applications. Would you say that 4.2.1 is better?

im my experience iOS 4.2.1 runs horribly on a 3G so I wouldn't recommend it

I think @AphoticD needs to experience iOS on a faster device :)

if you want an iPhone to play with I recommend picking up an iPhone 3GS they are nice and cheap and have 24Kpwn/Alloc8 BootROM exploits which let ya downgrade to any iOS version

and iOS 3.1.3 is very slick on an 3GS :)

iOS 6.1.3 is beautiful and fast on my 4S :) The "holy grail" to me would be a 5 running iOS 6 though. Since the vast majority of second-hand 5's sold today have been upgraded to 10 I'd need to go all the way back (if that's even possible).

I've been wanting to see iOS 3.1.3 fly, so that's a good reason to get one.

Just jailbreak an iPhone 5 and Dual Boot using Coolbooter with iOS 6.1.4 as the secondary OS :)

The 3G was never what I would consider a fast device. I can clearly remember the 3GS blowing it out of the water. IIRC iOS 4 was one of those heavy updates which hindered the older devices horribly and by the time Apple finished support at 4.2.1 the “speed” of the OS was back within the realm of acceptable. If my memory of that time period serves me right, then yes 4.2.1 should perform a little better than 4.0.1.

I kept my 5 on iOS 9 because I didn't know how it would affect the performance, and I didn't want to lose Swipe to Unlock.

So... That's one 5 in the wild not upgraded to 10.

The holy grail it is, bought this iPhone 5 64gb on iOS 6.1.4 for around $80-100(natively, no dual booting, I sadly can’t be content unless it’s native:p)

Required a new battery and speaker/mic assembly I believe? Quickly fixed it up, and it runs fantastic. The new battery I got for it actually has 1633mah capacity at the moment (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-5-high-capacity-nohon-battery.2110756/), more than the original 1440mah battery. Not a huge increase but a nice buffer for when the battery begins degrading.

@iModFrenzy: I can't help feeling a little envious. :) Dual-booting will have to do for me until I find one that's never been upgraded.

Just keep an eye out and you’ll probably find one. If I remember correctly, I wasn’t even intentionally looking for a iOS 6 iPhone 5. I just jokingly keyed in some terms, curious what ludicrous price it would be at. And ended up finding that.:)
