The sheer amount of hate for a notch on MR is crazy to me. I actuall preferred the notch to the cut out in my 16 pro, and I dont even notice the notch on my macbooks 🤷‍♂️

I used to be a big “notch on MacBook? Nope!” Person…bought it years ago and honestly never even noticed it. I was making a big deal about nothing. It’s like people that cry about bezels on the laptop. You’re supposed to be looking at the screen, why are you looking at bezels? You don’t even notice them if you’re looking at what you’re supposed to be

Looking like it will lack MagSafe too.
Yea, that came with yesterdays mockup article, through it seems less credible than the other 2 missing items, but yes, if MagSafe is indeed missing, that's 3 down.
Will be interesting what Apple actually will announce.
As much as I can see a foldable iPhone working for me, feels like it's several years out

I don't know why. It's the only semi-pocketable tablet, and the closest Apple has to a Kindle reader.

I agree it's a nice product and very useful in many situation a larger one isn't; maybe it's just too niche to invest much development time and money?

of course, I have no idea what the sales numbers are or Apple's plans, just a random commentator on MR.

To give us something to complain about on forums. Isn't that the whole reason the internet was invented?

And to take it further, if round corners bother you so much ... but u digress.
If all the rumors of lacking features (telephoto, faceID, MagSafe) turn out to be true, for a 2k+ phone, I dunno

I thought this might explain the actual problems folding phones solve. I get “bigger screen” but that’s a feature, not a user story.
The number of people who end up attempting/doing substantive and complex work on their phones always astounds me. Trying to do anything complicated on the smallest screen possible is to me a mistake, but I see friends/colleagues doing it CONSTANTLY. Having a much larger and more flexible screen, and a small external/large internal screen pair for small/large tasks built into the device many/most people are trying to use for seemingly everything is an extremely powerful user story in my mind.

The cost issue (and for me the loss of Face ID, which is maybe a showstopper) plays against that, but conceptually offering a small/large screen pair for small/large phone tasks is an obvious win, if the cost/quality/durability/etc tradeoffs are in line with the function gain.

Nobody is clamoring for an iPad when they are using their phone. When using a phone you wish you had a computer with you. If thing for the price they are asking is not also able to run Mac OS apps, it is far from ultra. Hopefully its time they started going that route. It doesnt have to be a macbook pro, it just needs to be a neo and you can see how useful that one is. Either buy a cheap phone and a NEO or a much more expensive all in one Ultra. That makes sense, an overpriced ipad does not. They can increase Mac marketshare real quick if phones count as macs. Plus id differentiates the high end phones from the low end with more than just ram or bigger screen.

I prefer the notch to the pill, too. The pill leaves a stupid little strip of useless pixels above it.

Apple could have done the exact same thing (Dynamic Island) with the notch, but they chose not to.

I don't understand the hate for the notch, frankly, but I equally didn't understand people hailing the dynamic island as genius. It struck me mostly as a well executed lemons->lemonade move.

Apple reportedly plans to unveil a foldable iPhone in September, and the device will supposedly solve two problems with foldable smartphones.

In case you missed it, a leaker on Chinese social media platform Weibo recently claimed that the foldable iPhone will be named "iPhone Ultra."

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device will have improved screen quality and overall durability compared to competing foldables.

"Apple engineers believe they've solved problems with screen quality and overall durability, two long-running flaws with phones in this category," he said.

Specifically, he said the crease in the foldable iPhone's screen will be "less visible when it's unfolded" compared to some other foldables.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the foldable iPhone would have a virtually "crease-free" inner display, but Gurman later reported that Apple is using technology that "reduces the crease without eliminating it entirely."

The foldable iPhone is expected to open up like a book, providing users with a large 7.7-inch inner screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking with side-by-side apps. The device is also rumored to be equipped with a 5.3-inch outer display, two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.

Great news indeed! Looking forward to getting and having it!

Please also release a new iPad Mini!

I'm getting worried that Apple thinks this will be a replacement and it very much is not.
This phone should not be an iPad mini replacement. iPad mini has its own purpose for those who like a mini iPad without a phone. However, I cannot wait to have a pocketable mini iPad and iPhone. I cannot wait to trade in my iPad Pro 11”. I rarely use iPad as iPhone 17 pro max has been my daily driver only. One device for both tablet and phone makes a simple maintenance.

They can't fix the crackling static noise charging iPhone 17 Pro via USB.

They can't fix the decades MacOS bug where it suddenly does not accept your password.

They can't fix the decade long dumb Siri.

And this article suggest Apple fixed the crease in folded plastic?

Curious on people's thoughts. Do you think with the release of a "folding" type iPhone, the sales of iPads/iPad Mini will be reduced, significantly?

There’s no such thing as foldable glass that is creaseless . Corning is maybe using a type of plastic or fiberglass
Will the quality be the same as glass?
While I like the idea of the fold ultra we’ll have to see if 2 cameras is acceptable

The sheer amount of love for notches and cutouts is crazy to me. The compromise isn’t worth it to me when there is a fine alternative in Touch ID.
Putting your comment and the previous comment together, and the fact that I agree with both, does makes me think that no-one really caresbout bitches and cutouts (or islands) beyond it being a handy talking-point to generate discussion.

I think the phrase is “a nothing burger”. And I mean that from all sides - notch vs island vs bezel.

Honestly, in the greater scheme of things, I don’t think it’s a significant factor.

The notch is not stopping people from buying MacBook airs and pros and iPhone e. The bezel is not stopping people from buying neos. The island is not stopping people from buying iPhones and iPhone pros.

It’s prices cameras and other specs that are far more significant factors.

For someone me who really is prepared to pay the eye eating price for a fold / ultra, notch, Touch ID vs Face ID, island, none of these will be factors.

Anyone who says “I’d buy it if it had Face ID, it I won’t because it doesn’t, it only has Touch ID” were never going to buy it in the first place.

If you are seriously considering buying this device, you’ll buy it simply because you can. That’s the flex here.
