Yes, except hat implies people will unfold it to use the better screen ratio. People generally don’t do that with phones, they grab it out of the pocket and check what they want to check.

The fold is added user friction, an extra step before they get to what they want to do. Maybe people will be happy to do so. I have a suspicion that most people who buy folding phones, after the first week or two of the novelty, end up using only the outer screen 90% of the time.
I expect the vast majority will prefer the pro as they have been and I agree most that buy it will use the outer screen most of the time. I think the buyer (not me) is someone that has been wanting to carry around an iPad but found that impractical. Not sure why they wanted to carry an iPad but then there are many many different people with different needs and wants than me.

I guess that this is the new and improved Tim Apple--Apple Inc. Now they're chasing innovation from others instead of being the innovator. Foldables have been out for years and Samsung as been banging the dents out of the tech and they're doing a pretty good job, it's just that I don't think the market is there for what they're releasing.

I guess we'll all find out (maybe) in September, but my guess it'll be overpriced and under-powered and under-engineered. Apple is returning to the Scully days. Tim needs to leave and let a forward thinking CEO take the reins. Preferably one that doesn't wear a red hat.

Curious on people's thoughts. Do you think with the release of a "folding" type iPhone, the sales of iPads/iPad Mini will be reduced, significantly?
Not at all. Foldables are less than 2% of the smartphone market, and some of the foldable users will also be using tablets regardless. Tablets have the benefit that they are easy to pick up indoors, without having to unfold them first. Their displays are more robust and have no crease. The Ultra also won’t support the Apple Pencil, and the size is no substitute for an 11” or 13” iPad.

agree, and let's not forget price. You can get any size iPad for less money.

The point is that you don’t have to carry an iPad with you for the times you do want to do more than just use a phone. A foldable replaces my phone and iPad Mini while enabling me to always have the tablet size with me which comes in handy a lot both when im out and about and while I am at home.

For me, it’s an iPhone or computer. I don’t want or need an intermediate that has an OS that isn’t as capable as macOS or a non-sandboxed OS.

I do understand that the iPad is useful for creative pursuits like sketching, etc. If the foldable supports the pencil then it would serve that role well.

yeah, that's me too. 80%+ of my time on a device is on my MacBook. My phone is mostly for when I'm on the move. I don't have much in the way of anything in between. But clearly there are many many different than me so good to see choices for all.

Kinda feels like they invented the worst iPhone that unfolds into the worst iPad for more than the price of an iPhone 17 Pro and an iPad Air combined.

Maybe it will work? I dunno.
no doubt they will gimp the iPad mini to make that decision easier for you.........[and me]

why does Tim believe a crease makes it unusable but a notch is fine?

Because a notch doesn’t go down the middle of the screen just at the top as peripherally visual….also the notch serves major function while a crease doesn’t….just have some faith and believe in Timmy! Just cut down on the penny pinchin Tim, cmon bro, we love you! …

The sheer amount of love for notches and cutouts is crazy to me. The compromise isn’t worth it to me when there is a fine alternative in Touch ID.

It’s fascinating if Touch ID is back on iPhone but no faceID alternative…didn’t Apple explicitly say Touch ID is far less secure? Idk I could be wrong…ummm and yeah both would be best since wet hands destroys touch access…but to your point yeah faceID is awesome and how it factors in with Dynamic Island is awesome but truly, having both would be the best for all scenarios, not just one or the other…surprised Touch ID wa never put on power button in iPhone yet…

I don't think it's solving anything there. Point #1 says that crease will be reduced but visible, so it's not solved. Point #2, why the hell a squarish form factor is good for movies or gaming when 16/9 is the standard in both cases?

First off it is solving the case of a HIGHLY visible crease (down to a hardly noticeable (supposedly)).

And second it’s a good form factor because it does increase the screen real estate without massive compromise on the size when folded (supposedly). I know they wouldn’t release this device if it wasn’t seriously amazing so i can see it just feeling so amazing to hold from any angle, screen open or closed’.

Can’t wait to see this go through the bend test

IKR…I think it’ll pass with flying colors (didn’t the air iPhone hold up really well as well?)

What do you think? At least two comprehensive set of tests (open and then closed screen)

I’m more interested in IP rating for water….

I used to be a big “notch on MacBook? Nope!” Person…bought it years ago and honestly never even noticed it. I was making a big deal about nothing. It’s like people that cry about bezels on the laptop. You’re supposed to be looking at the screen, why are you looking at bezels? You don’t even notice them if you’re looking at what you’re supposed to be

Ppl like to complain, notch is awesome The contours of notch and then evolution to a similar aesthetic style with Dynamic Island…so amazing and it’s mostly out of view so you don’t even have to think about it unless you want to….i have whatever size it becomes the island at least stays slightly oval and not a tiny punch hold (that’s android style ugly). Or maybe sure yeah, a round island but at least have it be thick and round not a tiny little dot bleh.

So I think with no Face ID the open screen will be…All. Screen.

…if so just wow look out.

Crease-gate.
Apple can't make a 1gen device better than a 7 gen device from soooo many other brands. Even the notch and finger print reader under display PROBLEMS have not been solved by Apple yet. But anyway the crease is not a blocking issue for 99% of the users, just YouTubers will complain.

Under display is not really even an issue, fam.

No one gives a *%^# cuz using the hardware and the amazing iOS 26 is just…amazing, no one cares abt the notch/islands….they take in no way shape or form away from the Apple iPhone experience.

It’s those whacky droid companies that feel they have this big tech war that they must conquer it’s pathetic…Apple just stays applin’ 😎

What also reveals your ignorance is “Apple can’t make a gen 1 better blah blah blah”…what abt iPhone? That was gen 1 and that smushed everyone alive lol (still does to this day almost 20 yrs later)
I guess. I don't actually consider the mini pocketable except in a coat. I don't even consider the pro max pocketable.

Either way, the mini is still a nice size.

Pro max is def pocketable with no case and the right jeans…or yeah also those hyper slim cases that works…

If “bigger screen” weren’t a user story, we’d still be using a 4” screen.
I’d just buy a MacBook Air or Neo to go with my phone. Same price in total, much bigger screen, much much more productive OS and UI to go along with the big screen.

Even apple park has curved glass..but bending glass 10 times a day at that degree..no matter how thin it is it will break, is not a matter of if but when..sooner than later. People believe this like i saw they believed true efficient wireless charging without causing cancer
Physics

I better be able to run macOS on it or I will stick with my free Android phone.
Macos probably 0 chances but if we dont get both ios and ipaos with their own capabilities and UI …
Smartphones are about touch OS capabilities, laptops and desktop are about tactile OS capabilities
