Not trying to argue, but please show me a line of law from any state laws that says that, "police are not allowed to handle your phone". LOL. Dude, you can make your point without embellishing and exaggerating. That's like saying, "they can't take your license back to their car". They are both items that belong to you and both items someone voluntarily handed over. You show me a law that says an officer can not leave your car window and go back to their vehicle to write you a ticket. That's you OPINION, not a law. Technology always has a disconnect and tech (especially mobile technology) usually exceeds the resources and means for something newly launched to be used exactly as envisioned or intended at launch. Even police officers will have to adjust to it and become used to it and doing it differently. I also think (not sure) that there is fine print that not all states that allow an Apple Wallet version of a license still won't require a physical license to operate a vehicle. For the most part, these digital ID's in the Apple Wallet are approved for use only at CERTAIN TSA checkpoints in airports. Not all airlines allow them, nor all states and cities. It is all still very fractioned.
"The feature does not replace a physical ID in all situations yet. For example, Apple makes no mention of IDs in the Wallet app being accepted by law enforcement or the government, so carrying a physical ID is still a necessity for now."
But claiming above that,, "they are not allowed to take it back to their car, they have to read the information off the screen while you hold the phone".....is not true and I would challenge you to show me any laws that state that in any of the participating states. Maybe what you meant to say is that they are not allowed to "perform a search" of your phone?
For the record, I dislike cops and am very anti cop and government. I'd only have my digital license in my Apple Wallet as a backup for some unforeseen situation and would continue to use my physical ID like I do now for everyday use. I'd also imagine bars, clubs, etc will be very hit and miss on accepting them.
Overall is it a "cool" feature, yes. How useful it will be or practical we will see
