A proposed First New Law would require Apple to disclose per-Category Revenue Numbers for (at least) the iOS App Store here in the States, & require them to do so "at the end of each work week".

And, last but NOT least, to specify what percentage was generated by the Top 10 apps in each category, as well as what percentage of apps in each category that generated NO revenue.

It's not clear what these data include. From the article: "The average amount spent in apps per active iPhone in the United States grew to $138 in 2020, an increase of 38 percent year-over-year according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data. This includes spending on in-app purchases and premium apps, but excludes commerce apps such as Amazon, rideshare services like Uber, or other apps where purchases are not directly processed by the App Store."

Does this mean my One+ subscription is included? If so, I'm dragging the mean up. If not, I'm dragging it down.

Also, this isn't very helpful without medians (and inter-quartile range) and standard deviations (for the mean).

"Average person spends $138 on apps a year" factoid actually just statistical error. Average person spends $0 per year. Apps Gary, who lives in cave and spends $3,000,000 on the Chinese Tom and Jerry gacha game every day, is an outlier and should not have been counted

The average spent per phone on games is more than the cost of an actual console game (like a Switch game, for example). That's kind of surprising. It all seems so . . . mediocre, for the most part, and a slab of glass is not an ideal controller. I wonder how much is for those in-app purchases just to cheat at the games, etc.
More than the cost of ONE console game for the entire year. I’m pretty sure most people buy way more than one console game a year. Also it’s apps and that includes ones that aren’t games. Productivity is a popular category.

That is my take.
Does this include subscriptions and in-app or just new app purchases?

I've done a couple of in-app but zero new.
I bet it includes subscriptions if you’re paying through the App Store. For example I have Amazon Prime but pay directly so I doubt that counts. I’m definitely above the $138 average but not crazy high like the one guy who spends $800 😂

I've had an iPhone for about 10 years I think, and have spent exactly $0.00 buying apps or on in-app purchases. I am quite surprised that the average user spends that kind of money each year.
I think it depends on what you use it for. Some people only use their iPhones for phone calls, texts, social media, and the occasional picture. If that’s all you do then you probably don’t spend money for apps.

Yes, and I have no problem with people buying apps - just had no idea that it was a 'thing' that people spent so much money on (in total). Guess thats why I keep holding my apple stock.

I can almost always find a free version of the few apps I need, and no, I am not a gamer at all, so maybe that explains some of it.

Most of the time if you’re willing to put up with ads or maybe not as many features there’s a free app that will do the trick. Games and in app purchases are evil lol. I occasionally spend a few dollars but I know how much of a trap that can be so I avoid it like the plague. Most of my spending is things like Apple One and a few productivity apps

Average is almost certainly dominated by mobile game IAP big spenders. It would be nice to see median amount spent as well. Then again, median might be $0.

No, I was referencing the cost for games. $76.80 of the $138 is on games. It was the biggest jump of all the categories.

And I understand people buy multiple console games, but I'm just saying Apple is making a lot in the gaming industry when you consider that $76.80 is the average. Think of how many people with iPhones spend no money on games at all and how much some must be spending to bring that average to $76.80. And it's not even a device designed for gaming. I was just pointing out it's a significant number--and surprisingly so to me, given that to me at least it's not a really ideal gaming platform. But that's why I said it's probably so high from those in-app purchases in casual games, the ones that let you cheat your way ahead. Personally I think I would enjoy one console game a year much more than I would $80 of in-app purchases for gems or whatever people buy in iPhone games.

Ooof! That is a whole glop of dough! Worse still the bulk sounds like it was spent on in-app game purchases; and most of the Puzzle games listed target non-adults - a good solid preparation for a future stint working with Gamblers Anonymous.
