I wonder how much lower that average would be if people could try before they buy...
And for those people bragging about having spent $0, that's fine if you actually didn't buy/download anything. However if instead you just got a bunch of *free* apps then hopefully you know you're being data mined.

Does this count purchases like Apple TV+, Pandora, Apple Arcade, etc.
What about iBooks and iTunes movies/shows? What about other subs in the TV app?

If it includes the above and similar services, that's way less than I'd expect (even only on the phone) as an average.

Wow that seems a high average, not doubting it, just surprised by it.

Udo wonder if it I clouded that guy who was recently reported as having like a quarter million in spurious charges. Haha.

i sure brought that average down)
You probably didn't affect the average at all. This average is probably based on averaging together the less than 10% of users who spent well over $1000, plus 90%+ of users spending nearly nothing.

It's a highly skewed distribution leading to a misleading "average" (e.g. a mean nowhere near the median).

Although I suppose that if one pays the premium to remove ads etc, and likely even for many subscription apps folks are still being data mined.

Went and looked in a bit more detail ..

App Store
Apps - None
In App - 50
Subscriptions - Halide / Hiya 26/year

Google Play and other Android stores
Apps - 24
In App - 30
Subscriptions - YouTube Music 13/month

I probably spent $20 to $30 last year. There are some games that are responsible with the IAP. Legends of Runeterra comes to mind specifically. They just had an event that lasted a month for $10. The cosmetics were for the paid users of the event but any cards from the event were also earn-able by the free to play players.

Do you really think buying the app prevents you from being data mined? I doubt it.

Probably safe to assume everything you do online, paid or not, is being mined for marketable data.

I spend $0 on apps, I would probably buy more if I could get 14 or 30 day trials; I end up buying lots of laptop software that way, but refuse to shell out money just to see if something might be useful on my phone.

Does Apple forbid trials on IOS? Never could figure out why they weren't more common, like they are for non-phone software.

Serious question if someone spends $1K or more on iPhone apps, what are they buying? Most apps I have seen are less than $10, many less than $5, and honestly have no idea how someone would rack up $1000's in iPhone app purchases.

They used to.
These days it is tied in with IAP.
Try a crippled version and IAP if you want the package.

In-app purchases in games, it's right there on the diagram. Gaming/gambling is an addiction for many people and devs take advantage of that.

I don't think I bought any apps last year and none this year so far either. I don't even check out the app store anymore and haven't for several years. I've had pretty much all I needed on my phones for many years now and most apps I have are free.

I never really buy paid apps. I don't have any need for them. But do I spend money in Pokemon Go every now and then? Oh yeah. I probably brought that average up if anything. Oops.

A few IAPs to remove ads but nothing major from me last year. I spent more on hardware (watch and 18W plug)...

COVID probably had allot to do with that.. Many people staying home, what else are gonna do ...Housework?

Just once i'd like to see an increase but "wasn't" related to. Is that too much to ask

I’m actually surprised it is so low. I’ve spent more on take away coffee than that. And that is despite three Covid lockdowns.
