I hoped that the chipset in the new 3G would enhance the camera abilities in the iPhone. Maybe the new iPhone 4G!

The last time I checked, Apple have never claimed that the iPhone was a 'camera phone'.

'Camera phone' is a generic term to describe phones which have cameras isn't it?

I don't think I've ever heard any manufacturer refer to their phone as a camera phone, it's more a consumer term I think.

Well, I would say some phones are "camera phones" and other phones are "music phones" and what not.

I had a sony that could technically play MP3s, but I wouldn't call it a "music phone" ....

theres such a horrible rates

The iPhone camera is fine. If it were an iCamera phone we were talking about, it'd be quite different.

I don't need to buy a tiny P&S camera because I have an iPhone in my pocket to snap the occasional casual pic. If I'm going to be somewhere where I know I'll want to take plenty of pictures I take my camera, not just a phone.;)

More pixels is not always better. Trying to cram a bunch of mega pixels into a smaller area can have more negative effects anyway. I'm not looking to blow my iphone pictures up to enormous sizes anyway so what they have now is fine for me mega pixel wise.

Why do people allways have to say its not an iCamera so it dosnt matter that the camera is crap

It dosnt have iPod in the title so can we not discuss the music/video side of things
It is not a PDA so can we not talk about the Calendar/Address book etc
Lets also ignore the internet side of things because it is mainly a phone

There really are some die hard apple fanatics on here that cannot have a bad word said

Perhaps it can, but other manufacturers of phones manage it and they produce very good pictures

Quite. The reality distortion field is strong in this thread.

The facts are that the iPhone's camera is very poor, even considering it's form factor and price and the fact it's a phone. Most if it's competitors deliver significantly better images.

There is plenty of scope for Apple to fix it, and plenty of reason for people to tell Apple via any method they can find that it's a major failing.

the iphone is definitely a piece of garbage. sure it takes decent photos during the day, but after 6pm it becomes completely useless.

I clearly said that...

Well .... it's better than any phone camera I've ever owned before.

*shrug*

Yeah I've had a few Nokia and Sony Ericsson's with 2MP and they weren't that great. Dust and fluff being the main culprits for ruining the images.

Every non SLR camera is a piece of garbage after 6pm. I dont expect to take good photos with any point and shoot much less a cell phone camera. I think it serves its purpose well for taking quick snapshots but I wouldnt expect to archive those photos.

Nothing's going to beat a full on DSLR obviously but I've seen some pretty darn good shots from a Canon Powershot in low light. That Digic III chip is very nice.

my main complaint is the amount of time it takes to boot up the damn camera

i wish that when the phone is locked, the lock button would turn into the camera button, and you'd use the home button to turn the screen back on

it's too hard taking pictures in the moment with it, imo

uhh no. 'non slr' cameras still at least have a flash, as with most other decent cellphone cameras. therefore infinitely better than the iphone camera after 6pm.

thats the thing. i'd love for the iphone to be able to take casual pics but it doesnt. if im out with my friends at night i'd like to take pictures of them out on the town but nope. impossible with the garbage iphone camera.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

With a built in flash you get red eyes, black bacground, overexposed shiny oily faces. I agree that its better than what you would get with iphone camera but its still crap.

Am I the only person who thinks the camera is alright?
IMHO, a cell phone camera is there to snap a quick pic of something and be able to send it quickly. In that regard, the iPhone does well in lighted areas.

Megapixels do not tell the whole story. I've seen much higher megapixel cell phone cameras take from a little worse to a little better pictures than the iPhone.

Could the iPhone camera be better? Sure. I would expect the next version to have a better lens and sensor. However, the current one is decent.

Personally, I would much rather see video capability than a higher megapixel camera.

LOL! I'm sorry that I'm using a phone with a 10 year old technology.

Also with a laptop equipped with:

- a QWERTY Keyboard, which is a 135+ yr old technology.
- LCD Screen, which is a 120+ yr old technology.
- Speaker, which is a 130+ yr old technology.

And many other "old" technologies....
Your logic is quite cool.

My sincere apologies.

This is what I can remember about the release of camera phones in the UK market.

1) Summer 2002 - Sony Ericsson T68i - The first phone I recall that had a camera. Now the camera wasn't built into the phone, it was an external attachment.

2) Autumn 2002 - Sharp GX10 - Launched by Vodafone this was when their Vodafone Live kicked off. Less than VGA sized pics and terrible quality by todays standards. It was the first phone I recall being on sale with an inbuilt camera. Vodafone also released a Panasonic model alongside. Unfortunately today, Panasonic & Sharp are no longer in the UK mobile phone market.

3) Spring 2003 - Sharp GX30 - 1 Megapixel camera plus flash with memory card storage!!

4) Autumn 2004 - Sony Ericsson V800 - 1.3 Megapixel rotating camera. One of Vodafone UK's first 3G handsets.

5) Summer 2005 - Sony Ericsson K750 - 2 Megapixel camera with Auto Focus and flash.

So this article in the OP is complete bogus!

ahh the memories! im also from the UK and remember when the GX10 came out! EVERYONE i knew wanted one because it had a camera.

i also remember when the GX30 launched, i believe it had a slide cover for the camera or something?
