I saw that option a couple of weeks ago, but never had the balls to order it up let alone replacing it. Great work, seriously!

Thoses lucky european black-iphone-3g-ers.

I wonder why CNN out of all places is selling this. Is this something they just made or is it a legit part from apple that just hasn't been incorporated into the iphones yet?

fitment is perfect

just to let anyone who wants to do this...
the fitment is right on...

so i am guessing they come out of the same factory.. maybe apple has something down the pipeline.. kind of like the mini ipod going into all different colors....

3 hours to have the BACK of the phone black?! I guess it looks snazzy but I don't think I'd dedicate that much time to change the color of a part of the phone what will just be covered by my hand. Oh well kudos to you, maybe this is the first step to customizing our iPhones, besides having them laser etched.

very true very true if you have the right tools...

very true very true if you have the right tools... which i didn't.. and studying how to take it off from the web.

the 3 hours include trips to home depot!! didn't have the super tiny screw drivers...

and those with big hands.... good luck.. cause damn.. those screws are tiny to get off and on...

i went into this ready to void the warranty... but at least i didn't hammer and break my iphone like some people on the web.. i wish i could have played with their phone.. hahahaha.

i am thinking about retrofitting one will all white.... that will be more work because that involves sanding the primer the whole back.. but will definitely look bling... got to see if my asia connection can hook me up with parts.... haha..

but thanks for all the comments....

Freakin' Sweet!

Now if someone would come out with a black display frame to replace that jankyass chrome one that apple forces on us!

The iPhone's back is black and silver because the black is an design illusion to visually shorten the phone.

Oh, yeah, don't forget about the fact that your SN and IMEI #s are on the the original backing. But, who needs that stuff anyway?

In post 2, picture 3, the rear case doesn't look well aligned with the antenna cover. My factory case doesn't have a ridge like that. Did something bend during the reassembly?

It would be cool, to not look like everyone else's iPhone. But, I'll likely only keep this phone a year, so not worth it for me.

Actually I think it's plastic because the antenna has issues getting through the metal portion of the phone. Being black gives (me) no illusion of it being smaller. Just the factuality that it looks cheaper, therefor, the illusion that I didnt pay so much for it ;)

Put a red bezel on the front and call it the U2Phone!

Agreed though, we need a version without the cheap looking chrome (mine's starting to look like brushed metal).

Totally!

Yeah, mine is getting all "brushed" up too. And I have a rubber cover over it!

Is this really a solid metal backing, and not the same material as the backing on the original iPhone? If so, is there any truth to the assertion above that the antenna of the phone has trouble going through metal?

To the original poster: How is your reception now that you installed this backing? Has it changed?

I don't see why everyone is saying that this voids your warranty. I have not heard that there is a seal that breaks to show Apple that you took the backing off and replaced it. If you ever need to send it in for warranty coverage, just put the original casing back on.
