This is my first login to this forum in 10 years or so. The last iPhone I had was a 3GS. I remember being really disappointed with the first iPhones after all the hype. No 3G in early models when we'd had 3G on every phone for years at that time in the UK.
I switched to Android after that because the iPhone seemed so behind. Well, after about 10 years of Androids and getting each new Sony/Samsung (or LG at one point) and setting up my home screens to look almost the same I decided I wanted a change and that I'd try an iPhone again.
I'm not an fanboy of either Android or iPhone, I'm not what you'd call a 'power user' (or whatever the term is these days), not an expert by far - but I know my way around a bit more than the basics of an Android/iPhone/Windows/Mac/Linux.
My honest opinion is that a flagship iPhone and a flagship Android are on a par and it's pretty much personal preference.
Coming from an S21 Ultra 5G to my new iPhone 12 Pro Max wasn't actually as much of a jump as I thought it would be. (By the way, I never had any problems or lag with the S21 Ultra.)
My very first impression of the iPhone was - oh my god what have I done? At first switch on, with the change in resolution and the lack of ability to change the homescreen grid size, it looked like one of those special phones for the elderly where all the buttons are massive. But now that my eyes have adjusted I'd actually say I prefer the iPhone.
The main things I've noticed are...
The camera, even though it's technically inferior, is much better for video recording on the iPhone. The S21 U has 8K video and all the bells and whistles - yet on the iPhone camera the video quality somehow looks so much better, in just 4K!
The battery... How? My S21, with a bigger battery would finish the day on about 30% and would need charging overnight. The battery on the 12 Pro Max is amazing, I can charge it at 6pm and it'll go overnight on standby then all through the next day and get to the following evening with 50% left. It's amazing!
I didn't think that the 120Hz refresh made a difference and wasn't bothered about it. But when I first used the iPhone, it seemed so, so jerky and stuttery. It was insane how bad it looked in comparison. My eyes have adjusted somehow and I don't see it anymore. But it was a huge shock at first.
Mobile signal - It's much better on the iPhone, no idea why. But I get much better signal in a lot of places. Same network and no extra available bands.
I thought I'd be bothered by not being able to poke around in the file system - I'm not, I can pretty much do everything I want to without needing that.
Some of the default apps aren't as good on the iPhone. I shamefully found myself installing Google Calendar today. Apple maps is very slow, but useable and I'm using it.
But there's nothing I really miss from Android, which I didn't think would be the case when I made the leap. Like I say, they're definitely on a par these days.
I'm kind of getting a bit tempted into getting a MacBook again now, which is totally what they want! But I'm resisting because I splashed out £2,500 odd on a windows laptop not too long ago and can't justify it!
