I own an iPhone 4, and got a chance to briefly play with a Windows phone 7 today. I played with the Samsung Focus=first impression, VERY IMPRESSED!!

I don't know how to describe it but the phone and OS of the Samsung was just....Light. Everything was very fluid, and fast. Microsoft did a kick ass job on WP7, in fact, I would honestly say its more fluid than an Android phone.

Ok here goes my review, (I have owned quite a few phones, so I know what I talking about)

Design (physically)
There will be many different WP7 and Android phones, but only one new iPhone each year. And as far as the design and the way the phone is constructed, the iPhone wins no questions asked, it is shiny, good weight, and an all around sexy phone. The thing you have to remember about the iPhone is that the OS and device are both made by the SAME COMPANY, which means software and hardware are going to work better than the competition. The Samsung focus is plastic, but did feel good in the hands, it was easy to type on and I will review the keyboard later.

Screen
Well the big thing here is Retina v. Super Amoled. and just like any other feature on a phone it is opinion based, personally I would take the Retina display, just because the PPI is so high that text and details look unbelievable clear on the display, not to mention the colors on the iPhone look pretty damn good too. However, if what you are looking for is colors and movie watching the Super Amoled is the clear winner. When you look at the Super Amoled display the colors are just sharp, they pop-out and are very bright. Both displays are great. Here is the way I look at it though, Super Amoled maybe better in watching movies and looking at pics, but I spend a majority of my time texting, emailing and surfing the web, meaning the retina display is going to win FOR ME. IMO more people spend time on the internet, reading emails & texts than watching movies.

OS/UI
Before Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile was the clunkiest OS out their, yes, there may have been a lot of business features but the OS was just slow and buggy. Well, in WP7 it is fast and fluid! No lag what so ever, scrolling and navigating were very easy and the animations on the phone make it seem like the "tiles" and screen are real (lol, you no what I mean). Your tiles on the windows phone 7 are live meaning they update right away.
you have a calculator app, phonebook, weather, news, messages, and email. But IMO the way the tiles work is just unorganized. I really like how fluid each app works, and how you have to scroll to the right or left to get more options, but it just seems like microsoft was 90% of the way there and just threw it together. i just think that the way to start the apps and display them on the homescreen could have been improved. I know the tiles are basically the entrance to how the UI works but its not as simple as IOS.

IOS on the other hand has 3 years of experience over WP7 OS. And Apple has done a fantastic job with it. Yes, their are no widgets, and the UI may seem "stale" but it is the easiest to use. The icons and every part of the OS is colorful, and really is visually appealing and pleasing to the eye. The retina display makes the icons look fantastic, and the phone and OS it self just look organized and simple. I personally prefer it. IMO every feature on the iPhone is more visually appealing than any other OS. When apple releases a feature they make sure it is perfect and easy to use.

In the end, I see more colors, more unity and organization in IOS. In windows phone 7, there is a lot of black, and the tiles are only 2-3 colors, v. the wide variety on the iPhone. WP7 is very fluid and easy to navigate around and IMO less laggy than Android phones.

App Store
Come on now....
The app store is simply incredible, over 300,00 apps/games and counting. Gaming companies like Electronic arts, Business's, Stores and universities are all releasing major applications on the iPhone! Yes, Android is starting to catch up, but I have yet to find a Major app on the Android market that is superior to the iPhone version.
Windows phone 7 just started, but has a decent amount of apps. The xbox live integration is great, and very colorful which makes the app look like fun, and work great too.
In the end Apple wins.

Email/Music/other
for basic email again the iPhone's clean and organized UI make it very easy to use. However because I don't use my iPhone for business, I cannot vouch for the amount of features that it has, I know for sure that it is not as advanced as a blackberry though. Windows phone 7 has a simple, elegant app that is very smooth. again same thing with business email.

Music on both devices is great. Basically Zune v. iPod argument. Both are great and it's totally your opinion.

Keyboard
Ok, I believe this deserves it's own section. ON an only touch screen phone the on screen keyboard is the only form of text input. the iPhone has been my favorite to date. Apple did its research with the size of screen to keyboard character lengths, and widths, to best colors, everything. And I have always preferred the iPhone's keyboard its fast and simple and very easy to get used too. I have used the HTC keyboards, Stock android, Every althernative on the android market, you name it and I have not found one to come close to the one on the iPhone. Their is just a lag or its not as fast.

HOWEVER, after using the keyboard, I was THOROUGHLY impressed, I was blown away by how easy and accurate it was to type on. Easily better than any Android alternative, and IMO just as good as the iPhone's.

All in all, it comes down to user preference. But I have to say I have used many phones, with the Galaxy S, the windows phone 7 phones coming out they look pretty cool, but i have never thought of giving up my iPhone. The organization makes it look like an elegant OS and is easy for me to use. Not to mention Jailbreaking opens up a whole new world of phone. Good luck to what ever you do, and if you have any questions just ask.
that was exactly the kind of post i was looking for. thank you for the informative review.i agree with you in many things such as the app scrolling on the wp7. i think i'll rather go for the iphone because it will most likely function better on my mac than the windows phone 7. many of my relatives have the iphone and after playing with it a couple of timed is seems very stable and fancy (just like snow leopard). but now the big question should i buy it now i.e during the next week or should i wait for the release of the possible iPhone5? i really don't want to end up buying something a week before the new model comes out you know.

iPhone 5 won't prob be released until June?

Ok iPhone smartphone counterparts with no doubt have more bells and whistles. However the iPhone to me has a way more polished os.

Now some would be lead to believe that iOS is outdated. But is iOS as current there for a reason such as keeping the stability and polishness of iOS?

I would assume apple is well aware of counterparts. So I wonder if apple really knows what their iOS is and that all those bells and whistles can be a detriment to stability and polishness. Or is apple just content?

I think Apple knows what they are doing in regards to technology. Look at the Mac book air which is the future of 'laptops'.

But technology isn't the issue per say, the issue is os. Is apple content or is there an iOS in the works with more bells and whistle's? Or is apple saying 'our current iOS is the best in regards to stability and polishness just for right now and to offer our customers the best stability this is what we offer'?

I have test driven androids and even w7. I was kind of jealous. No doubt androids and w7 offers more however not nearly as polished as iOS. In other words in my opinion in regards to stability and polish there is iOS and just everybody else. But alot of users want all the stuff and will sacrifice that for polish.

I use my device ALOT for my online biz. iOS provides what I need to work my biz on the go.

All 4 versions of the iPhone have been release around June/July. So you have about 5 months to enjoy your device. However the great thing Bout having an iPhone is the resale value. When the next gen iPhone comes out the iPhone 4 will most likely still sell for $400 on eBay or craigslist. And if it's unlocked and I'n mint condition maybe even $450. I always wait a month before the next gem comes out and I can usually get about $400...

Also the white iPhone is rumored to come out I'n april?? Correct me if I am wrong.

Both are fine with me its just a matter of which one is more in sync with the rest of your lifestyle. Since I'm planning to completely switch to Mac, iPhone is the one for me.

jeah i have heard similar rumors on a site called macrumors.com or something like that you should check it out sometimes. well i don't really care about the color of the phone as long as it is black. And if i can sell my "old iphone 4" for ≈$400 then i think i'll go for it. and after all the upgrades wont be that significant, will they. see iphone 3g to 3gs. what do you think are they going to release a totaly new iphone or just the white iphone 4 or some other different looking iphone4:s?

Nice reviews, I VERY much appreciate the lack of fanboy responses on here, nice to see some balanced honest reviews.

I'm an old time Windows mobile user and sorely miss those days, it was just such an open system where you could really do anything you wanted. I know WP7 is nowhere near as open, and probably quite a bit more closed than Android, but I'd like to experiment a bit.

The only thing that gets me is why no one outside of Apple is thinking in terms of hardware aesthetics. The Focus feels very cheap in the hand, it's decently made and I don't think it will fall apart or anything, but it just "feels" cheap. The same thing with my Samsung Captivate, which I own and actually prefer over my ip4 but 99% of the time gets left sitting at home because I enjoy the "feel" of my ip4 better. Yes the feel and heft of the device is very important to me, but I also like the fineness of the ip4's display. This is one thing these manufacturers need to improve on is the hardware aesthetics, this is really a large part of why people buy Apple's products, they just "feel" so polished.

What MS have tried to do with WP7, is be a middle point between Android and iOS, not as open as Android, but not as closed off as iPhone.

does anyone know if there are some kind of themes for the wp7? i was in my local electronic store today and tried out various phone. i have to say the iphone still impresses me the most as for the os and the very nice menu system. the windows phone has a os similar to the on on the iphone but its not as nice looking in my opinion. the media player of the wp7 is also nice, but i cant see any difference to the one found on the iphone. i don't think there is anything to say about the app store its just awesome. the marketplace on windows is similar but i think it's not as "colorful" as the app store. but as many other users have said and many other will say in the future the feel of the iphone is just superb. none of the other phones can equal its built quality. the keyboard found on the other phones is pretty sweet but is it really worth the money? i don't think so. in conclusion the iphone feels and functions better than many other brands. windows on the other hand id new and has that same fresh feeling on it that the iphone had a couple of years ago (when it was released). lets say i would go for windows wich particular model would you recommend for me.

You're asking this question on a Mac forum, OP?

As of right now, iOS is more advanced.

But because Microsoft are not Apple and they won't limit everything to hell, in a year or two WP7 will be lightyears ahead. So if you're going to be stuck with a phone for the next couple of years, go WP7. I waited for 4.x to see if Apple was going to give the platform a much needed overhaul. Nope. Same old crappy 4x4 grid.

true but the windows phone seems also pretty restricted.

You're advising the OP to buy a Windows Phone 7 on a Mac forum?

Having never cared for the videos I saw of WP7 in action - while respecting MS's unique UI approach - I was surprised by how much I liked the experience of using an Omnia 7 recently. It - the UI- really did make everything else on the market seem outdated. Having said that I wouldn't buy a WP7 phone, for the same reason I didn't buy a first gen iPhone i.e. too many basic features missing.

Yea, I know exactly what you mean. WM6.5 and below was a headache far too often, but up to this day it had the closest feel to having an actually computer in your pocket. The same way you would edit registry, move/copy/edit/ files, manage processes, multitask, etc: was practically the same way it was done on a PC. Not to mention there still is nothing more compatible. R.I.P Windows Mobile, Hello infant Zune phone.

Apple seems to be gradually loosening up their choke hold on the iPhone and every year they seem to make the competition catch up instead of the other way around.

Personally, I hate Windows Mobile 7. I much prefer iOS
Android with HTC sense UI is my favorite of all though.

What annoyed me was when I upgraded to the iPhone 3G, some of my room mates had phones which could connect to HSDPA, and they were barely smart phones.

The iPhone was innovative, but not on all levels (especially if you remove it from an American context, which was in the dark ages before the iPhone, and in many ways still lags behind the rest of the developed world). It had some nifty new software solutions, but hardware wise it's hardly cutting edge.

Watched the video and his review is slightly biased towards WP7 (which I think is a good OS). It's also rather subjective and saying stuff like 'side scrolling is not as good as the android's downward scrolling' is down to taste. There are also quite a few factual errors (camera app section for instance) so I'd recommend not taking what he says as gospel. Rather, turn down sounds and watch it as a presentation of what both OS look like :)

iOS is definitely showing it's age in terms of appearance and perhaps it's time for an overhaul...whereas WP7 looks amazing but lacks maturity. so might be a case of age before beauty or vice versa .....I never quite remember :)

Ok so i bought the iphone4 after all. So theres no need to advice me anymore but this thread can be useb ti disguess tue phone anyway. Thanks for your help. Have a nice christmas.
