Apple plans to release an iPhone with a microLED display in the future, according to a report today from supply chain publication DigiTimes. This display technology would allow for higher brightness, decreased power consumption, improved contrast ratio, and other benefits compared to current iPhones with OLED displays.

The paywalled report claims the Apple Watch Ultra will be the first Apple device to switch to microLED, followed by the iPhone and iPad:
Starting with Apple Watch, Apple plans to further introduce microLED display to iPhone and iPad. Some sources from IT industry forecast that Apple Watch Ultra will no longer use existing OLED display by end-2024 or 2025 as it will be replaced by Apple's self-developed microLED display.
With the Apple Watch Ultra not expected to use microLED until 2025, the first iPhone to adopt the technology is likely still several years away from launching. All four iPhone 15 models coming later this year are expected to stick with OLED displays.

In the meantime, Apple is still completing its transition to OLED displays. The first Apple device with an OLED display was the original Apple Watch, followed by the iPhone X, and the first iPad and Mac models with OLED displays are rumored to launch next year. The transition to microLED will likely follow a similar smaller-to-larger device trajectory.

I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted a laptop with a display that simply looks normal in full direct sunlight. You know? Something that’s as readable as that thirty-thousand-year-old technology, ink on paper?

If a MacBook Air with a MicroLED display brings such ancient magic back to reality, I’ll be first in line to get one.

Phones at least you can shade with your body. Laptops? Ha!

I really don’t get what people don’t understand about this. They discontinued the iPhone mini because practically no one was buying it. They’re not gonna bring it back because the same 350 people on Internet forums keep asking them to.
You never know with Apple. Recently, Apple brought back the HomePod after discontinuing it... Also, the Battery Percentage Indicator and the list goes on...

Bottomline: You just never know!

Well, I mean, of course. This has been visible for a while... and DigiTimes is treating this as if Apple were going to keep the displays to the Watch previously.

I mean if you stretch the timeline, at some point every Apple device will use Micro-LED. It's just gonna take years.

From what I remember, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on micro-LED and the results have very low yields. It kind of feels like a bit of a betamax vs vhs technology repeating itself again. Micro-LED is definitely better, but better doesn’t matter if you can’t get product into the market.
It just needs much more time. OLED even took decades to be implemented on the PC market.

This would be a good time for the iPhone to provide support for the Apple Pencil.
