What's this microled and does it have true black like oled? I don't want more light shining into my face, i want good color reproduction at lower brightness instead.

Incidentally, how will Samsung mangle this, QLED style?

Apple plans to release an iPhone with a microLED display in the future, according to a report today from supply chain publication DigiTimes. This display technology would allow for higher brightness, decreased power consumption, improved contrast ratio, and other benefits compared to current iPhones with OLED displays.

The paywalled report claims the Apple Watch Ultra will be the first Apple device to switch to microLED, followed by the iPhone and iPad:With the Apple Watch Ultra not expected to use microLED until 2025, the first iPhone to adopt the technology is likely still several years away from launching. All four iPhone 15 models coming later this year are expected to stick with OLED displays.

In the meantime, Apple is still completing its transition to OLED displays. The first Apple device with an OLED display was the original Apple Watch, followed by the iPhone X, and the first iPad and Mac models with OLED displays are rumored to launch next year. The transition to microLED will likely follow a similar smaller-to-larger device trajectory.

Here I was getting all excited and then I saw " Digitimes " , it's Ok, it's not happening.

From what I remember, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on micro-LED and the results have very low yields. It kind of feels like a bit of a betamax vs vhs technology repeating itself again. Micro-LED is definitely better, but better doesn’t matter if you can’t get product into the market.
They will get there eventually. Almost all new technologies follow this very path from being invented and too expensive/complex for a mass market to finally being profitable and easy to manufacture.

Not a new rumor, neither does it really matter if it happens whenever it happens.

I can't understand why Apple are messing about with the new gen Oled, which will clearly help Samsung.
Micro LED is the future just like the M SOC is.
It's time APPLE moved away from Samsung displays!

Hahaha I beat you to this thread. And as far as the Mini returning I just can’t get with a phone with bad battery life…..cuz physics.
All the mini needs is an hour more as far as the battery is concerned & the A17 will give it that.
However the main reason I didn't buy the 13 mini, was because of the lack of pro materials, The mini should be a pro without the telephoto lens, or better still, go to 5.7/5.8" with 3 cameras and watch it fly off the shelves!

Oled, mini led, micro led, ips, dynamic island, usb-c, new processors... yet still gimped by ios until the end of time.

How about a real file system? How about thr ability to get rid of the flashlight and camera from lock screen without having to remove the apps altogether? How about more customizations of the home screen and ability to use landscape mode?

You never know with Apple. Recently, Apple brought back the HomePod after discontinuing it... Also, the Battery Percentage Indicator and the list goes on...

Bottomline: You just never know!
They stopped making the original full-sized HomePod because they weren’t getting enough profit out of it, especially after having to cut the price of it. Once they solved that problem, of course they brought it back. Wouldn’t make any sense to perpetually sell a small-sized HomePod without the regular one along side it.

The battery percentage indicator was a stupid thing to remove in the first place, and probably took them not even 10 minutes to code for.

The iPhone mini isn’t the same as either of those two. They listened to a loud, vocal minority online who kept saying they wanted a smaller iPhone and then when they saw how poorly it sold, they stopped making new versions of it and replaced with a cheaper, larger sized iPhone which is completely understandable.

Is there really a defined roadmap in display technology? OLED was the next thing, and then Micro LED, but QD-OLED seems to have sidetracked that a bit.

You know business is bad when a business starts putting out information about what they "plan" on doing/releasing years down the road while lacking quality products during the current cycle.

Offtop... iPhone naming getting confusing. I am suggesting simplifying:
  • Year of release numbering.
  • S-M-L for Small-Medium-Large size.
Example:
  • iPhone 23LP (Pro)
  • iPhone 23L
  • iPhone 23M
  • iPhone 23S
