September 2024: "Apple is planning to launch its newest iPhone with a quadruple array of centuple lenses effectively turning the back-glass into a massive lens able to take images that allow 1024 times magnification. It costs only 9.999 iCoins and includes the basic iCloud storage of 1 Petabyte to allow storing more than 5 pictures that the 32GB internal storage would otherwise allow."

I have to laugh at some of the comments here as the people clearly don’t understand the implication of more cameras. Here’s a hint: read up on lightfield technology. This is clearly where they’ve been working towards.

Sure, why not put 4 lenses? I mean if the only thing that differentiates phones today is how many cameras they have on the back, then why not go for broke. We already have some BS camera "benchmark" that claims one phone camera is better then another, but at the end of the day the images always look the same except that it is all subjective if you like the color saturation or not, which is all fixed in post-editing anyways.

At least one new iPhone with a triple-lens rear camera led by a 12-megapixel lens may be introduced in 2019, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News.

A very rough mockup of an iPhone X with a triple-lens rear camera

The report predicts the camera would have a 6P lens design with 5x zoom, but it doesn't specify whether that pertains to optical, digital, or hybrid zoom. The single-lens iPhone 8 has up to 5x digital zoom, while the dual-lens iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X have up to 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.

If the report proves to be accurate, then Apple will be following in the footsteps of Huawei and its new P20 Pro smartphone, which also has a three-lens rear camera system, including a primary 40-megapixel f/1.8 lens, a 20-megapixel f/1.6 monochrome lens, and an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

A three-lens rear camera would provide a lot of advantages, including greatly improved low-light performance. In his P20 Pro review, The Verge's Vlad Savov said Huawei's new camera system is "superior to those on the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X," though he noted that personal preference may sway that decision.

All in all, this prediction suggests a third-generation iPhone X with an even better camera and possibly 3x optical zoom will launch in 2019. As far as this year is concerned, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn't expect many changes to the iPhone X's current dual-lens rear camera system.

Well Apple led the 2 lens revolution and everyone copied.
If only this was true...but we're at macrumors so not surprised.
[doublepost=1523375454][/doublepost]
Apple had been working on the 2 camera setup for years before and made it the standard. Apple made it a thing and the industry followed.
Lol it's always "apple was working on it years before. Well HTC had dual cameras long before Apple started working on it.

A phone release after the iPhone X takes equally or slight better photos than iPhone X but with less features. Sure Apple is throwing lenses randomly.
On point with typical Apple fans rewriting history. First it was another member saying Apple started dual cameras first. Now its the iPhone X got released before the Pixel 2. Damn. In a few years when Apple releases there car they will be the inventors of cars. After all, Apple was doing R&D on cars since 1780.

This is highly disputed and depends a lot on methodology.
[doublepost=1523355422][/doublepost]

Right... Face ID... "Follower"... Removing the headphone port and going digital...
Going for the notch... "follower".

You do know also that phones like the damn P20 have just shipped mid cycle in very low quantities.

You think Apple just decided 2 months from volume production to R&D and stuff another camera in the case...
Man, the crap I have to hear.
[doublepost=1523355476][/doublepost]

You're doing the same thing., so not fine, you're pretty being desingenious.

Apple 'followed' Sharp and Essential on the notch.

'mid-cycle' is an Apple thing as it only usually releases once a year. Huawei releases a Flagship every quarter (two Huawei and two Honor). Logically Apple cannot keep up with that pace.,

Against Huawei it really slipped last year against the Mate Pro which had a far more capable battery, faster and better charging, dual simultaneous VoLTE, gigabit capable modem, better AI etc

The P20 Pro just took things up another notch and in a design that is simply stunning.

By the end of the year the Mate 20 will take things further still, possibly borrowing things from the Mate RS which already has in screen fingerprint sensor, microcapsule cooling and 10 watt wireless charging.

On top of that, it seems Huawei has some of the first patents on folding screens too.

Put a lens in each corner and we'll get ride of the wobble introduced by the protruding camera! /s

So, you got nothing huh. Go look at Apple's damn patent portfolio, otherwise I don't ant to hear form you.

Lol, it definitely wasn’t Apple who was first. And it’s definitly not Apple who’s the best in this area. Coupled with buggy and stale software from Apple I’m lost where this company is heading. Sad how things can change in a few years timeframe.
[doublepost=1523382025][/doublepost]
Except no one cares about Huawei.
Well, Apple should care because Huawei is eating Apple’s lunch in Europe, India, China and one of the fastest growing brands. Won’t take long before they overtake Apple at this pace. And Apple is just letting them do it. No new iPhone SE, iPhone X should be priced at the iPhone 8 range and the iPhone 8 isn’t competitive priced against a Galaxy S9 or the new Huawei. Together with buggy software and lagging in services and stale programs from Apple... I really ask myself what direction this company has in mind. It’s not eager and nimble anymore.

Have you taken a look at Huawei's patent portfolio?

Apple and Huawei supposedly have a cross licencing deal. Some say Apple lets Huawei use around 80 of its patents. Those same people say Apple gets to use nearly 800 Huawei patents and pays Huawei millions for the privilege.

How much truth there is in that, no one really knows but I'm quite sure that without access to Huawei patents, Apple wouldn't even have a phone.

Well, if it really takes Apple 4 years to research this in secret and it only takes Huawei 2 months to come to market with it... Apple should better go out of the phone business like they did with the pro computers.

Seriously, Huawei is putting far more money in research and development than Apple does. All phonemakers are copying the best parts from each other. Some are faster and some are lagging for years like Apple.

Apple used to excel in the combination of fantastic hardware with fantastic software. Those days are unfortunately gone and I’m afraid it’s too late to regain it back. Like education, pro hardware, Apple TV and most what’s coming (if there is anything coming) out Cupertino, it’s too little too late. Competition has better solutions for reasonable prices these days. And they also (maybe copied) came on par with Apple’s build quality.
[doublepost=1523383307][/doublepost]
If this was about Xerox back then, it’s definitely about Apple today.

I'm the target audience for the 3rd lens. I own the 8+ and had the 7+ previously just for the 2nd lens! I just hope it's a telephoto with focal length equivalent somewhere between 85-135mm.

Well, Google acquired Lytro so we'll see what will come out of it but their work on using intelligence to do with one sensor what other companies require with multiple sensors is interesting.

As for Huawei, predicted they were a direct threat to Apple and at this point they have edged past Apple.

4 lenses make sense. not three.
[doublepost=1523386631][/doublepost]
and quad lens the year after?
yes. please! because that‘s the only way to get better pics (and takes no space)
[doublepost=1523386745][/doublepost]
Third? I thought it was first of april. How many is relevant then - five? Or do I misunderstand the benefit of more lenses. It is starting to look really odd.

no it‘s not odd. it‘s 2, 4,6 or 8 and it makes sense

Bruh, no one said Apple invented that or 2 lenses for a camera. Apple made it work properly and backed it up with software tools that ultimately led the industry.

Apple also didn’t invent the first smartphone, but they lead the smartphone revolution through their implantation of the hardware. Same thing with 2 lenses.
