Just like with second lens, it feels like marketing excecutives decide features and then some engineers have to find a way to make them (marginally) useful.
I actually wanted the 2X Zoom for a while now. Im assuming apple will be adding TrueDepth to the rear for more AR features with maybe better zoom.

Considering the Google Pixel 2 line already takes better pictures (and portrait mode effects especially) with a single lens maybe Apple should focus on improving their ISP & associated software rather than just throwing more lenses at it.
A phone release after the iPhone X takes equally or slight better photos than iPhone X but with less features. Sure Apple is throwing lenses randomly.

I cannot believe that nobody has said anything about the Huawei having a 40 MP camera as one of the three. Wowzah! And look at the examples of all that phone does with said photos. Copy the hell out of that and sooner rather than later. And for those that have commented with their own personal roadmap speculations...when do you think we get 5G support? 2021?

Interesting, the new X will get three lens! Cannot wait to see how it is different in photo quality! I just very naive on camera technology and never even knew that the more lens you have; the better the picture quality is.

These high end smartphone cameras are going to be replacing those $4K-9K digital paper weights that are carried around by photojournalist in war zones and sport events all the time when it gets 10 lens in the back.

Enough already. Camera technology is driving up the cost of cell phones to absurd levels.

People who want insane cameras should buy... a camera. The rest of us don't need Hollywood studio level cameras in our phones.

I think this is why they offer three phones. If you don't want the absurd phone don't buy the absurd phone and instead by the less absurd phone.

Apple should make phone with 4 cameras :);):D:p:cool:
They bought the technology for this 5 years ago. It looks like they’re going down the Huawei road of one big pense and two smaller ones which they’ve also bought but they could easily go for 4.

I for one want to have a professional quality camera in a smartphone. It makes no difference what the cost is! It the quality that is the issue not the price! I am hoping that Apple and Samsung do an $10K combo smartphone and high end professional camera/video camera that has at least a TB of flash storage!

I had my hopes up when Apple went to two lenses that they'd allow the iPhone to also capture landscape (widescreen) video when filming vertically.. Got my fingers crossed this time around.

The ISP on the Pixel 2 is actually mediocre. It’s all software.

That’s because a higher megapixel doesn’t necessarily mean a better camera. A Nikon D40 with 8 MP will shoot better photos than that phone.

Perhaps in most situations but when you like blowing up your photos, 8 MP just won't cut it.

Yes, Google does amazing things with photos in software, and the ISP in the Snapdragon 835 is mediocre, but the Pixel 2/XL uses a custom ISP called the Pixel Visual Core, which is anything but mediocre. The Pixel Visual Core wasn't actually enables until a later Android update which gave the Pixel 2's photo quality a fair boost (and it already had a bit of a lead on Apple's latest and greatest). Apple could stand to step it up on both fronts.

The Pixel Visual Core isn’t used in the main camera app and is only used at this point to allow third party apps to use HDR+.

Pixel 2 camera has most of the same features other than optical zoom.

Hmmm, you are correct. Looks like some of the tech sites didn't even know that initially but posted corrections later. Good to know. Ok, so Apple can probably do better in software then too ;)
