I know there is a T-Mobile pre-order thread already but it is flooded with iPhone 8/8+ posts. I am a fairly new T-mobile customer and never pre-ordered an iPhone with T-Mobile service (former AT&T customer).

I understand that T-Mobile is not so easy with the iUp plans through Apple as you have to be in store, which means T-Mobile people will not be able to get their phones until stock is available in store (which, for all we know, could be a long time).

I am now considering just buying the iPhone X outright from Apple as soon as I can (hopefully at midnight on 10/27). Does Apple usually sell iPhone outright (unlocked) the night pre-order begins? I know a few years ago they did not and the unlocked ones went on sale a few weeks later.

And if they do, can you buy any version of the unlocked iPhone X (AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon) and just pop your SIM card in or do you have to have to get the T-Mobile version??

Any hitches here if you are willing to pay full price?

And, did anyone notice that Apple Care for the iPhone X is $199!!?? Wow.

looking forward to the ipx. I am warming up to the notch. I am trading an ip6s to take advantage of the Tmobile promo. I am also planning to put some extra money down to get the monthly payment lower. Time seems to be moving at a snail's pace ever since 07/12.

I plan on buying the T-mobile X outright. Just move fast, since it does not look like the SIM free will be an option, everyone buying outright without entering carrier info has to pick t-mobile phone.

I use cricket, so this is my only option if I want a launch day phone.

When you order form the online apple store you select t-mobile as your carrier. When your phone comes you will simply swap our the SIM card. The phone is unlocked so you can pop in any carrier supported SIM.

All U.S. iPhones are unlocked, carrier or not

Just remember this simple rule:

T-mobile/AT&T iPhone can work on T-mobile/AT&T interchangeably, but can NOT work on Verizon/Sprint

Verizon/Sprint iPhone can work on any

So would it be better to pre-order a Verizon phone then?? I wonder which will be easiest to get??

Where are you getting your information that all U.S. iPhones are unlocked? A few years back I had an iPhone 6 and I wanted to switch over to t-mobile. The t-mobile rep put a t-mobile sim and the phone said something like "Unsupported SIM". I had to get the phone unlocked and then I was able to use it with T-Mobile.

I believe Apple started selling carrier-interchangeable iPhones since 6S

ATT and T-Mobile use GSM while Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. You can't take a phone designed for GSM and use it on a CDMA network.
Like I said, you can't bring T-mo/AT&T iPhone to Verizon/Sprint, but you CAN bring Verizon/Sprint iPhone to T-mo/AT&T

I will test this again on my friend's iPhone to be 100% sure. Will update my post. Please don't base your future iPhone purchase solely on my findings.

Don't worry I still always stick with buying the T-mobile version because I have no intend on ever switching to Verizon or Sprint. They have terrible service in my area.

I was also under the impression that you could only buy the verizon or sprint version if you already have an account with them or open a new account. So im not sure how feasible it would be for non verizon/sprint customers to get their hands on a verizon/sprint phone.

I think you can buy a Verizon or Sprint phone (or AT&T or T-Mobile phone) unlocked directly from Apple by purchasing full price. I was just unsure if unlocked phones would be available immediately for pre-order. I am scared about pre-ordering a Verizon phone to use of T-Mobile but as sniffies stated, you can bring a Verizon/Sprint phone to T-Mobile (but not the other way). I remember hearing something like this with the 7 plus so I do believe he is correct (plus he has personal experience doing just that). I agree, its probably a better move to buy the Verizon (b/c as he pointed out, the resale value is probably better).

Good to know, thanks sniffies! Let us know your findings with your firend's phone when you can...I want to come up with the best strategy to buy a phone on 10/27...
[doublepost=1506376433][/doublepost]Also, it does let you buy a SIM free version for any carrier for the 8/8+ now in the App but I am not sure if that option was there on pre-order night...anyone know?

I'm planning on pre-ordering through the TMo app and seeing what happens. Trading in my wife's 6s+ for the $300 deal and handing down my 7+. I think this is going to be one of the hardest iPhones to get since it was released 10 years ago. Fingers crossed for everyone.

This is not true. Only Verizon iPhone are unlocked because of an agreement that was made many years ago. If you buy for any other carrier they will be locked to that carrier.

You have to buy sim free or Verizon for it to be unlocked.

You could be right. I’ve never dealt with an AT&T or Sprint iPhone; only Verizon and T-mobile.

Edit: I believe the full-price T-mobile one is unlocked too.

Well, I’ve narrowed it down to T-Mo or Verizon unlocked if Vz can be verified as truly unlocked, which it sounds like it is. Unless, they sell an unlocked SIM free version on Pre-order night....

I still can’t believe Apple Care is $199!!

I am doing exactly the same thing! Trading in wife’s 6s and handing down 7+.

I am doing exactly the same thing. It’s unfortunate that TMO customers cannot pre order using the IUP. Hell even Sprint customers can pre order .

It looks like the sim free version may not be available at launch so I will get the TMO unlocked full price phone. If you select the Verizon version it requires your verizon account information for some reason.

For the first time I may opt to not get Apple care as I will upgrade again in a year and I would still be covered under warranty except for if I dropped or damaged the phone.

I am really bummed T-Mobile doesn't have it together to link their billing system up with Apple's so people on T-Mo can take advantage of the Apple IUP program at pre-order. It makes me think they want to to essentially subsidize the phone through them and their credit/bank instead of Apple.

In any event, I will buy it flat out and sell it when I decide to upgrade again. I will probably be able to sell it for more than the value at trade in anyway. I am going to sell my 7+ as soon as I know I have secure an iPhone X....

You can if you aren't trying the sign up for Apple IUP for first time.
