Really? This is completely stupid, it requires less effort and money to just buy an iPhoneX. This is a controlled science lab experiment, nobody is doing this in real life. Waste of time here.

Yea, just ask the FBI how much it costs to do that.

Remember, that only occurred because some FBI/police idiot went over the limit and thus, using terrorist finger is no longer an option. The same “cost” would occur if FBI/police went over the limit with FaceID.

if any person spends loads and loads on a mask they would just buy the x anyway

It's not the phone that is valuable, it is the data on the phone. People do things like put banking apps on their phone so you can have access to their accounts if you posses the phone. Or they use a password manager that unlocks with face or fingerprint and gives someone access to all their accounts.

It's all about time. A passcode is required if you wait to long. That's when an iPhone becomes harder to crack.

The FBI can take detailed pics of the persons face right when they are arrested and immediately send the data to a 3D printer.
If they have all of the processes in place before hand, they can definitely beat the clock before a passcode is required.

Compelling someone to use their fingerprint to unlock a phone has a lot of legal issues around it, and they can simply refuse.
Taking a photo is not intrusive and doesn't require the suspect to cooperate.
All they FBI needs is a probable cause warrant, which can be obtained pretty quick, and the prepared mask and they're in.
No need for a suspect to cooperate.

So what? How many people are so important to be subject to such effort to breakin to their phones.
If one is, then turn off face id and use passcode only...
or buy an iphone 8..( not that fingerprint sensors have not been fooled)

Uncertain if it will be an issue, however photo from social media, CCTV, drone, etc, then 3D print a mask and unlocked magic. Not saying it’s not possible with fingerprints, however little less convenient.

I found FaceID slow, and the requirement to swipe up and having that horizontal indicator bar. I call the iPhone X a beta product, and not worth the price tag. Screen glitches for the price, no thank you.

But, by then, you have Activation LOCK. So, unless these guys can do the whole process in 2-3 hours, this “hack” is academic not practical.

And it’s safe in the real world. 5 tries, no more FaceID. If they can get a random phone unlocked in 5 tries, color me impressed.

Otherwise, who cares?

I can also brick my phone if I lose it.

But if somebody did get their phone stolen you would just cancel your card straight away anyway. The numbers people have in terms of account in the wallet section doesn't show your full bank card number. Only the last 4 digits afterall.

I know my natwest bank app doesn't even work for face ID yet.

One where you would be exposed would be somebody knowing your address.

And one can take a distant picture of your finger and then playdoh it. Oh yeah, fingerprint is so much more secure!

Activation LOCK. No need to call your credit card company.

The prints obtained during an arrest are not suitable for making a fake finger.

Uhhh no.

If someone is going to go that far and make a 3D mask of your face. They can easily get a copy of your fingerprint. You have more to worry about. Like who is stalking you.

How is "casual for anyone"

and "requires a 3D printer, several hundred dollars worth of materials, physical access to a person's iPhone X, and detailed facial photographs that can be used to reconstruct a person's face. Even then, if the 3D printed mask and the design of the infrared eyes aren't perfect, Face ID will fail after five attempts."

in the same sentence?

WOW! That is brilliant!! You can unlock an iPhone X registered with your face, with a 3d print of your 3d scanned face!
This guy is a genius!! ‍♂️

The claimed comparison with finger print based ID is a bit lop sided.

Reality is, it would take a lot more effort and equipments to obtain a 3D face profile that's needed to reconstruct such a mask. In daily business dealings, it would be far easier for those with intent to obtain the finger prints of an individual eg. Coffee cups, glass table tops, door handles, documents amongst others.

Playdoh is not considered equipment average person would have?

Because Playdoh can be used to bypass TouchID!

To think that all u need is a piece of Playdoh to bypass anything is kinda intresting..

It's like u think up of new ways for all door locks in car doors in a country just because all u need a coat hanger to bypass

Haha you think I should be banned for speaking the truth?

You also have 10 fingers and only 1 face. That makes Touch ID inherently more secure.

And you only need one finger and PLAYDOH. What is needed for this FaceID hack? Now, you’re just being silly...LOL

anything can be fooled - you can find a passcode easier than building a facemask a passcode is probably the weakest security key ever

These idiots again.

Not buying anything they or others do until someone shows a complete end-to-end video of the whole process. Again we have no idea how many times they failed and had to tweak their mask to get it to work. In the real world you don’t get unlimited trues.
