Purely a marketing tatctic. If they hid the sensors within a small bezel, the phone would look just like an S8, G6 etc. they want this phone to stand out. When you see that notch you’ll know exactly what phone it is.
I think you may be correct, and this is how you know Apple has perhaps jumped the shark a bit here. The fact that the 8 even exists at all is semi-proof that they know this.

OMG. The mockup by Matthijs Klaver looks so good!

Apple should really just reserve the notch for time and status on black background, while the bottom little bit would be also on black background reserved for swipe up to 'Home'. So the rest of content looks like what Mr Klaver have suggested. Also makes it easy for developer because dev have a complete blank canvas without worrying about home bar or status overlaps. This way the middle is all content. Which is still more usable room than their competition if done this way.

And they really ought to redesign the time and status icons and placement. Looks hideous as is right now.

This reminds me a lot of some of the OCD 'like' posts about screen irregularities. People really can focus on non-uniformity.

So now people will obsess with this, and go insane.

Great :D

Essentially, because of the iPhone X's swipe gesture indicator, its 5.8-inch display actually has less vertical space than the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 in landscape orientation, according to developers Sean Choe and Steven Troughton-Smith.

This is astounding. What a waste of space. Remove the bezel but use software to make the space non usable.. who the heck thought of this?

I think the design is....

...top-notch.

In seriousness, I think this wont be such an issue when you have apps that use colour in the notches. All the white makes it look stark. Example from CARROT.

It's not awesome, but not horrible here, or on the homescreen/lockscreen. The part that kills me is in full screen apps/videos/photos where it cuts off content. And the Safari renders have looked absolutely atrocious.

We really need to see youtube in landscape mode, because I watch those quite frequently on the phone as opposed to full length movies.

Another question: Will there be additional light emanating at the bottom of the screen because of the folded OLED at the base or will they just program the pixels to be turned off?

Yes this looks better, much better than the white but still would prefer a black status bar across the entire system at least as an option.

The notch is hideous IMO. I really wish they'd just left a small bezel up there that included the cameras and such. Based on patents over the past few years it's clear they want everything beneath the OLED, but technology just isn't ready yet. My guess is two more years. In any case, I'll still be buying one on Oct 25th.

This confirms my concerns.

I have a 6s I bought at its original release, and I will not buy a new iPhone this cycle. I bought a new iPhone annually up through the 6s, on release, btw.

I can't stand the notch. :p The mockup of how it should have been designed would have been much preferable. And I don't see any real reason to go from 6s to the 8.

Blech.

Get an iPhone 8 then ;-)

Honestly any other color than white would look far better.

This looks actually pretty nice as an example.

As long as 1) it's black when playing video in landscape, so I don't see the notch or the rounded corners; and 2) it's dark when the area near it is dark--where making it white would really make it stick out like a sore thumb--I guess I can live with it. Not loving it though; maybe I'll get used to it eventually.

Making it permablack (at top and/or bottom) certainly would defeat the near bezeless look, though.

I think different.

I think Apple (every smartphone) has/knows their restriction; the smartphone needs that space for cameras, and they can't be hidden under the screen for a full (non notch or bezel) iPhone.

So:

If they go with the Samsung S8 way (just reduced top/bottom bezels but still bars across) the status icons have to be below that bezel, right? status icons are a must.

The iPhone way, knows this status icons are a must, and says "lets take advantage of the fact that the front cameras are giving us some space on each side, and place the constant status icons there.

THIS WAY, THE APP CONTENT CANT START AT A HIGHER HIGHT OF THE SCREEN, AND MORE CONTENT CAN BE SHOWN.

Did I made sense?

Agreed. Better believe I'll be using a background that has a black bar in that area for the home and lock screens.

Or just make it user configurable.
This is the answer and it could happen. Remember it'll ship with 11.1 so we don't know the settings available yet.

Apple wanted the iPhone to be unique, it is what it is.

No they didn't. They don't have the tech to house both all the cameras/sensors, and go E2E. They chose the latter, and sacrificed a slew of things to get it.

It's not a choice to look unique. They gave guidance on not messing with UI elements because that is what Apple usually does: it wants consistency in its UI. It doesn't want central UI elements changing from app to app. It doesn't want a notch in one app, and a black status bar in another.

Honestly, the more I've thought about this launch. The more I wish they'd just slapped a 1080p OLED display on the iPhone 8 and the SE. Sure it wouldn't look as fancy as the X but it would probably be a lot more usable and what we'd actually want.
64GB iPhone 8 1080p OLED @ $699 please.

Yeah but they could have just made it black themselves then. Everything they've done in promotional materials and regulations shows they are purposely embracing the notch and there's a reason for that.

People don't realize that the reason that their bezels is to make the phone proportional. Because of the size of the Touch ID sensor, the bezels have to be big to make the phone look more aesthetically pleasing. These same people wanted apple to get rid of the bezels, and now they want Touch ID. Can't have it both ways

Sure you can. Fingerprint on the back. My ZTE has it and it's better than the front of the phone like the iPhone. And it's got better speakers and smaller bezels. It's got a screen the size of a 6+ in the body of a 6....
