Looks like they handled the notch well. I like how the X embraces the sensor array instead of hiding it with bezels like every other phone on the market. The ears work to increase the vertical height.

My only criticism is that the phone might have been a little wider to preserve vertical space in landscape mode. But then my hands are very large so a phone like my 6+ is the perfect width. I suppose Apple needs to keep the X accessable to people like our president.

How is it controversial? Why would they cut the notch out and not utilize it? They would be morons to do that.

I see all this BS marketing by other companies about "bezel-less" edge to edge phones and Apple comes out and actually does it. This is the first phone with as little bezels as possible. Every other phone has wasted space. The only bezels on the iPhone X are absolutely necessary as it's not possible to put cameras through a display.

Google notch..tons of articles on the ugly notch. This is highly controversial.

I was hoping the OLED would wrap all the way around the iPhone and notifications could be one side and touch on the other side. Or at least a mini OLED on the Apple logo.

Yeah but they could have just made it black themselves then. Everything they've done in promotional materials and regulations shows they are purposely embracing the notch and there's a reason for that.

If you make it black, then the screen does not appear to stretch to the edges. That is why I said they sacrificed many things to achieve the E2E look. By including the ears, you appear to have a larger screen. That's why they are there.

That is the sole reason for all of this. It was not to achieve a unique look to separate themselves from the competition.

I keep looking at it, and honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit. I think the one in the Essential phone is much worse, even though it's a lot smaller of a notch.

I don't like the notch, but as I saw pointed out somewhere else if they hid the top and added a tiny bezel to match at the bottom they'd have an LG V30. However IMHO the V30 does look better because it's symmetrical. Being symmetrical used to be a big thing for Apple even with things like ports, etc.

The list of things I didn't like about the iPhones I've owned...

3GS: It was too expensive, and had that dumb 30 pin connector
5: It had the lightning connector, and I had to buy a bunch of cables
6+: No one had any cases for it at launch that had a wallet (Found a faux leather one on Amazon for $12 that I still use, 3 years later. I really didn't expect it to last that long...)

The list of things I like about the iPhones I have owned would take too long to write down.

This new phone design was clearly an experiment. It's hard to believe that Apple will ignore an entire year's worth of upcoming notch hate. There's only so much anyone can do with a rectangular glass slab. This design clearly was chosen to make it look unique (at the price of aesthetics). The 8+ is looking pretty nice right about now.

Sure you can. Fingerprint on the back. My ZTE has it and it's better than the front of the phone like the iPhone. And it's got better speakers and smaller bezels. It's got a screen the size of a 6+ in the body of a 6....

Then you're forced to pick up the phone to unlock. Often I unlock my iPhone while it lays flat on my desk or nightstand. Fumbling with my iPhone while half asleep would be bad since I have wood floors.

A rear location for Touch ID would also be horrible for use with any but the thinnest cases. A lot of people like thick, rugged cases so a rear ID sensor would be horrible for them.

Which brings up another thing I like about the X: it doesn't wrap the display around the edges. Samsung's wrap around displays look cool in a store but they're not well suited for use with a case and require careful handling of the phone.

I have a feeling this will be worse than Bendghazi, particularly with how OCD Apple Users are.

Here, let me FIFY:

"I have a feeling this will be worse then Bendghazi, particularly with how OCD MacRumors users are."

Out here in meatspace people are more worried about using their phone than mounting it on a pedestal to stare at.

I dont understand the people that actually say they prefer the notch or it doesn't bother them at all. In landscape video or games it doesn't bother you?
I feel like those people have no design understanding or sense of design in their normal life. When it comes to how they dress or their interior design choice. I picture all these people owning brown couches because it doesn't show dirt easily and looks OK(everyones owned a brown couch), owning a Hawaiian shirt, having horrible style with clothes, cars, music, artistic ability, food choices.. ect...
ITs those people that set up an flat screen hdtv on a wall and let the cable dangle because well its good enough and it doesn't bother them.
The perfectionist and the people that understand how things should look not just in phones but in everything understand it is a horrible design choice.

"Controversial"... just like the iPhone 7/7+'s "controversial" camera bump. Now nobody even thinks about it. People always have to make something out of nothing. Ugh.
Not even close whatsoever. This is front and center. This changes content. The bump does none of that. That's why it was forgotten or People got used to it.
This is the biggest design flaw in the history of the iPhone imo

No it's not the first with least bezel. Essential looks better and goes with their smaller notch.

Terrible design. I really don't understand how a company that had such a great eye for UX design that wasn't always totally functional but looked amazing has gone in this direction where it both looks terrible and is functionally unintuitive.

I'm not going to say oh Steve wouldn't allow this and all that rubbish. There are plenty of people at Apple who know good design but obviously they are not getting through to the surface of these products. I feel like the people making the top level decisions, the final say on design concepts are dropping the ball majorly.

Such an unappealing appearance. It's funny how in the Apple UI documentation the example of what not to do actually looks a lot more appealing.

FWIW, I think Apple should have built a black bar into the iPhone X software to conceal the notch. They could still use the "ears" for appropriate info (like the time and signal strength) and even open it up to developers to adapt those ears for various app functions. The screen would look more visually appealing that way. I don't understand the thought process behind shoving the notch in our faces. It just looks odd.
