I pre-ordered two X's my wife says it's too expensive and said she doesn't want her's. I purchased both phones via apple.com on AT&T Next. I'm wondering how AT&T will handle the return? Am I now locked/forced into a contract with them since I made a purchase using Next? Or how does that work? Will they just put my bill back the way it was before (other than charging me the $$$ for my X)?
 
It’s kind of weird considering you ordered through Apple. How long have you had the phones?

I know AT&T has a 14 day return policy (subject to a $45 restocking fee per device).

I’m not sure how apples return policies run, but if you return the phone and your wife goes to something else, you may have to call AT&T to get them to remove the AT&T next installments
