Having to swipe into a notification and then use touchid to verify was not very intuitive to me. Now I can just swipe whatever I want to launch into.

i've only had my iPhone X for a few hours, but i do miss Touch ID. Like others have stated, it does not work well when you first wake up and are lying in bed. You have to hold your phone a full arm's length away for Face ID to unlock the phone. Can't speak for Apple Pay as I haven't used it yet. It also does not work well when laying flat on a table or desk because it requires you to pick it up or awkwardly move your face over the front camera. Overall, it feels like it requires more attention and effort than simply resting your finger on the home button.

Can you register more than one face? I liked Touch IDs ability to register my fiance's finger so she could unlock my SE without the passcode. It doesn't seem possible to add another face.

Also miss the ability to go right to the home screen after unlock. I really dislike that the iPhone X just sits there with the unlock icon until you swipe up. After all the effort and attention to get Face ID to unlock, i don't want to then have to perform a gesture just to get to the home screen.

I really do think Apple's inability to get Touch ID to work in the screen itself pushed them into face ID. Their desire to get rid of the home button meant if they couldn't figure that out, they would have to move to something else entirely, and this seems to be our current situation.

All that said, i am optimistic it will get better. With the phone learning your face on incorrect attempts after the passcode is entered correctly, it seems there is a lot of room for improvement. I don't think this is something Touch ID did.

I think that's a bit exaggerated. Touch ID wasn't unreliable, however certain conditions made it unreliable at times in the sense of possibly having a wet finger or colder temperatures. But as far as reliability when protecting my security, touch ID worked perfectly well.
It was indeed unreliable for me with dry fingers ... in moderate temperature indoors. I scanned as many scans of different fingers that it would take. It was hit or miss whether or not it worked. Like I said, I disabled it as it was too frustrating to use. Not exaggerating at all.

Interesting. i'm not sure why TouchID was so variable. It always worked very well for me, but for my fiance it worked probably 50% of the time and she ended up disabling it.

I don't miss it that much. The only time is when I try and use ApplePay, touchID is more convenient.

As a side note i really like the double ding it makes when you use applepay. I find it satisfying ;)

I don't miss TouchID, and I'm glad to no longer have a Home button: I love the gesture interface. FaceID has worked very well for me. I would like the option for the phone to open immediately after FaceID unlocks instead of having to swipe up, even if it means shooting past lock screen notifications.

It will probably happen sooner than later(software update)

Face ID works so well that I don’t realize the phone is locked. I get reminded that it IS locked when friends ask to check out the new iPhone and it won’t open for them. I’m now starting to resent my iPad Pro for making me stick my finger on the home button whenever I want to use it.

Don’t miss it at all

Just wish my credit union would update their app to work with it

And paypal

Developers don’t need to update their apps in order to use the Face ID feature if the Touch ID interface was already being used. It’s automatic. The interface might look similar to Touch ID, but when you set it up, it will ask you permission to use Face ID. It has happened to me on several apps and banking apps I use that haven’t updated for the iPhone X specifically. My credit union app pictured with the Touch ID interface, but using Face ID on iPhone X. They have yet to update the app since the launch of the iPhone X.

I was really worried about missing Touch ID because for me it worked 99.9% of the time and I really thought nothing could top it in terms of ease of use. I was wrong. FID is wonderfully simple and like most things Apple, just work. It will improve over the years just as TID did and will be gold standard.

Truly not trying to be argumentative, but here's my perspective on ApplePay with TouchID vs. FaceID:

TouchID: grab the phone from my pocket holding the home button under my thumb and jab the phone at the reader until it vibrates - done. I never had to look at the screen, never had to be careful about how the phone is aimed, never had to be careful about my grip, never had to push any buttons. One motion and done.

FaceID: grab the phone...change my grip...press the side button twice...move the phone around so it's got a decent look at my face...verify that it's registered my face...then move the phone down to the reader. It's a lot more time (speaking in terms of % - but it's still faster than using a physical card) but more importantly, it requires multiple manipulations of the phone and multiple repositioning of the phone. It's just a much more complex series of operations.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but FaceID sure feels like several steps backward.

No, and that's sort of an issue. My wife and I had our fingerprints registered on each other's phones for emergency access. Can't do that at all with FaceID. One face, that's it. Yeah, I can remember my wife's access code...she's much less likely to remember mine, which is complex, due to corporate policies resulting from having corporate email on my phone. So...that's a minus.

Not necessarily wrong, but maybe it just comes down to way you personally use your phone and how Face ID fits with that, because I definitely do not find it that complicated. I usually am bringing my phone out of my jacket pocket or purse by holding it on the sides (not "by" the home button so that part does not matter to me - I actually had to re-position for Touch ID all the time.) I double tap as I grab it or pull it out and generally note it has done my Face ID verification by time I am verifying the correct card is pulled up (maybe you always use the same card, and so don't ever do this, but I do have to switch between various cards depending on the purpose - personal, work, business, etc). I can basically bring the phone out of my jacket or purse to reader in one motion and all this is happening at that time without any further effort from me. The only "wait" I usually ever have is for the cashier if they need to input that I am paying via credit card, cash, or debit so the reader is ready for me.

Bonus with Face ID and Apple Pay is I can do it with gloves on (and not even touch sensitive ones as there is no swiping involved - unless of course I need to change the card).

I thought I was going to hate it.

I had a process in place that worked perfectly. I worried that in the morning when I reached for my phone it wouldn't be able to 'see' me in the dark.

I was wrong. I agree, this is the way to go.

It's pretty seamless for me now.

Which kind of begs the question as whether your wife should be accessing your phone anyway, because those policies are there for a reason (I say this as I am in a similar situation with my phone where I can have confidential work email on there). Your higher ups or whatever would probably see it as a...plus. ;) Lots of people also carry two phones for this reason...one for work, one for personal (and the latter can have an easier passcode if you want ;))

Not in the slightest. Being able to swipe up and immediately use my phone is a very nice feeling.

In addition to Face ID, having that bigger screen seems to attract a lot of attention. I was on a bus the other day and someone stopped and said "Can we just take a moment and appreciate how big his phone looks? It doesn't even look like a phone, it's like...the future." Needless to say I let her play around with face ID and animoji for a few minutes.

I totally get that, and agree in every way, except in real life. I carried two phones for 15 years, even after we ditched the BBs and went byod. I don't know anyone in my biz who still carries multiple phones, though I don't know how many want their spouse to be able to access their phones. OTOH, I don't remember the last time either of us needed to get into the other's phone.

I figure I may learn. It's not even a week old at this point. The gloves point has occurred to me!

The biggest issue for me even after over two weeks of use is I just can't find a consistent angle that always works. This is mostly an issue at the gym due to the frequency I lock and unlock the phone when logging completed exercises and sets.

Right now as I'm sitting at my desk, I tried two unlock methods. Looking at my phone while it's sitting in the wireless charing dock in an upright position. It unlocked without issue and fast. I tried to hold it in my hand and look down at it similar to the demo video. It again worked without issue and fast.

At the gym and in general when standing / walking I find that I have to hold the phone at an unnatural position

Get an Apple Watch. At the gym I don't even take my phone in... I use airpods (or BT earbuds) against the watch which runs off the gym's wifi (or LTE). I track all my sets there using the Strong app (and cardio with activities). It's super convenient. I can imagine when working out and being in the zone that with the constant lock/unlock with FID and the X that there would be some missed angles.

As to the OP: I don't miss it one bit. I duns TID actually perceptually slower than FID when dealing with encrypted apps, etc. Website logins and other secure apps just instantly unlock, by the time your brain would process you needed to touch the home button. It's truly wonderful. It's close to the best thing on the phone, (up there with gestures and screen) and I never expected that.

My only issue is the same as many: waking up it seems to be hit or miss. Must be an angle thing.

Haha. Didn't realize there was a "approved" list of sunglasses. The other day I was out ALL day and my polarized wayfarers were a no-go. I fully admit that was extremely annoying. All my sunglasses are polarized, so maybe I need to do a test. Someone should start a thread on "compatible" sunglasses. I would think all decent sunglasses would block IR, no?

my polarized Rx Wayferers and non Rx polarized Aviators work fine

I second this. Being able to look at a notification then immediately delete it without being prompted to use touchID just makes sense. I always felt like that step was so unnecessary.

I actually look at my 7 Plus and it feels so antiquated. I really dig FaceID and it has yet to fail me in a week. It unlocks while laying on a desk with me hovering over it without issue.

Edit: I must add that when I did the first (and only) FaceID setup I moved my head in a wider fashion as to cover more aspects of my face. I decided to do this as people who ran the setup a second time recommended doing so.

I do have an Apple Watch and AirPods as well. Although I use jefit. I’ve been using Jeffit for years. Strong app does look good so I downloaded and will check it out. The jefit Watch app was never stable when I tried it (admittedly I haven’t in months) so I just do phone.

I always have issues when I wake up, but it's attributed to sticking the phone to close to my face and/or my face being partially covered as many others have experienced. My behavior will just change in time.

I have polarized wayfarers and non polarized aviators too, both non Rx. Neither work. You have attention on? I'm struggling hard with the sunglasses and FID. I need to do more testing, but clearly I don't wear sunglasses that often because I'm not able to test FID on them regularly.

Thank you for that tip - I went back and re-enabled the Golden One AND the Paypal App to use touch id and yep they both worked with face id.Thank you again
