I have an old phone for sell, if I just sell it with an additional usb c port on the side and label it “iPhone X with usb c port” I could net 40K?

Uhhhh…. You do realise people use the port for more than just charging right? With the iPhone 13 pro, it supports prores video which can be 100s of gigs. Good luck porting that to a computer with wireless charging, or usb 2 speeds with lightning. Sure if you have a Mac you can airdrop, but it’s still slower and pros need fast speeds. If you don’t have a mac, it’s not possible

Also, wireless charging is NOT a viable replacement right now. It’s still much slower, you lose tons of power due to the nature of wireless charging (see apple’s MagSafe battery, which is pretty much useless) and at this time, it can’t transfer anything. In fact, if you had a portless iPhone, you won’t even be able to restore it if it gets bricked.
Too many Apple fan people arrogantly favor the removal of ports probably because they don't use the ports and only use wireless charging without realizing, or rather, caring, that Lots of people still do connect their iPhones with a cable to their computer or charger.

I am guessing money wasn't just for the used iPhone. Who ever bought it probably going to reverse engineer and get the patent for it.
Did you really think this comment through?

Exactly what would they patent and what could they do with said patent?

Pretty sure you can’t patent an iPhone and a putting a USB-C port on a phone isn’t a mystery…

Apple: all* our devices will be shipping with USBC/TB as standard. It's the future-oriented technology that everyone will benefit from

*Also Apple: you don't like Lightning on your 2021 phone? How about I shove a whole bundle of Lightning cables up you a##, will you like that?

I still really hate this. The time to dump Lightning (which is a terrible connector, I'm sorry... but no cable gives me more trouble than Lightning) was with the iPhone 7 when dropping the headphone jack. As more devices moved to connecting direct to the port rather than the stereo port, they would have been using USB-C instead which better future proofs them rather than the brave new world more adapters to new ports.

It made a ton of sense with the laptops moving in that direction. Instead? This ridiculous "some iPads are USB-C and some are Lightning." Awesome guys. Super awesome.

"Also remember, we totally love the environment so we're not going to totally make a bunch of stuff needlessly obsolete."

I'd actually argue that wireless charging is the most frivolous thing I've seen. We waste a lot of energy just because we're too lazy to plug a cable into our phones.

Once you know that wireless charging only has just a fraction of the power efficiency of wired charging, every fibre in every decent human being should be screaming: We shouldn't be doing this. Unless of course you think it's cool to need twice the power to get the exact same result as before, a charged phone.

I'm glad to see people saying this. Wireless charging is basically the most first world thing out there. Unnecessary waste of resources to facilitate the ultimate in human laziness. They're the bloody worst.

Still have my iPhone 8. I keep hoping the next one will go USB-C. I sense what will actually happen is whenever I upgrade, that's when Apple makes the switch, lol.

Apple made a good purchase and paid him for the rights and patents too I bet.. ..can't believe there research and development team couldn't do this. They should hire him.

well this is just a way to self promote one's content. Get a few of your friends to bid, then no payment, sale is cancelled, macrumors has posted about it, info has gone viral, the kid becomes "famous", he has attracted attention, job is done.

A few points:
  1. If you look at the blog post from the seller, what he did was buy a Lightning-to-USB-C adapter for about $3, and reverse-engineered to make it fit inside the iPhoneX. So, he didn't really create the "World's first USB-C iPhone", he just took an existing USB-C adapter and fitted it inside the phone.
  2. To the people who think Apple should hire this man so they could learn how to make a USB-C interface: Apple already has USB-C interfaces in some of the newer iPads, so they know how to do it. It's just a connector type. It's not a big deal. Apple could put USB-C in their iPhones tomorrow if they wanted to. They probably already have prototypes.
  3. Chances are 99.99% that the bids are bogus, and payment will never be made. This happens on eBay a lot when the bidding gets high.

Man, this forum is full of haters! Why are you haters hating on this creative and innovative man who modified the iPhone and the person who appreciated him enough to pay him a relatively modest amount (considering that Apple execs get paid in the hundreds of millions for non-innovative products)? Many of you same haters don’t complain when Tim Crook gets hundreds of millions of dollars for ripping people off and for including USB 2 speed Lightning connector on the iPhone 13. But you hate on the financial little guy and the relatively rare decent rich person who is willing to appreciate and pay him for his hard work, creativity, and innovation.

Wireless charging isn't even that lazy. You still have to carry around the "wireless" charger, which is itself just another wire, and is bulkier and more expensive than a standard lightning cable.

And of course, wireless charging is slower than USB/Firewire charging, even with Apple's fancy MagSafe charger.

What a stupid waste of money.
Yeah I can't actually see who'd do it as it isn't really a collectable (or something I knew existed), it's just some student's random science project.

Presumably if you REALLY wanted USB-C, you could pay somebody to do it using the instructions that he's already published for free online. Guessing it's not THAT hard as the thunderbolt cable already plugs into USB. Without knowing the tech, I'm guessing you're basically de-soldering the port, soldering a USB-C port in and making sure all the pins line up. MAYBE there's some basic circuitry needed as well? (For example a thunderbolt cable identifies as an authorised cable... guessing he's just removed that bit of logic from the original cable, built it into the iPhone and hacked the port so that USB-C cables are recognised as official thunderbolt cables rather than UUSB-C cables).

Presumably you're joking.

That's my guess though... some mod shop's probably purchased it with the intention of rolling it out. We'll then see the mod on Ali Express for $5 in a week or two (with questionable circuitry and some sorta trickery to make the iPhone think it has a USB-C port... Apple will probably then disable it within a few months).

Surely the mod's not THAT hard though? I'm thinking they basically de-soldered the old port, soldered in a new one (patching the wires over - Thunderbolt already plugs into USB and is essentially a USB cable). Then there'll be some trickery (possibly a cannibalised Thunderbolt cable, hard-wired to the 'recognition' pin so that all USB cables are 'legit').

Smells like a $5 Ali Express hack to me... not a $$$ collectable device. IMO you could pay an engineer to make you the mod for less than this.

Assuming wired transfer speeds can be accomplished with just a hardware mod (I do not know) the speed difference would be incredible!

iPhone lighting port (USB 2.0) speed is : 480 MB/s
iPhone USB-C (USB 3.1) speed is : 10 GB/s

Still a ways to go with wireless charging in cars, especially rental cars used for road trips, or on planes that have power outlets.
What! Why. I’ve used MagSafe for the 12 since day one. Have never needed to plug it into a cable to charge it for over a year.

Why do you need USB C? What are you going to do with an iPhone with USB C?
